Michael Vaughan making the point on 5SX that Wood and Woakes are not gonna get test match fit by just bowling in the nets etc. .. send them back to their counties to play some real competitive cricket .. I agree totally
I think they have a basic choice. Either send them back to their counties or get them to play some real, competitive cricket.
Like The Hundred you mean? Have to wait for August for that but, with the best will in the world, 20 balls a game isn't going to get them match fit for a Test!
No, of course I don't mean The Hundred.
We know that you don't like County cricket and that you have professed a liking for The Hundred. Bowling 25 overs in a County game will get them match fit and to get used to landing the ball in the right areas.
I don't think county championship cricket can ever be described as "real, competitive cricket". I assume we differ on that. But if the contentions of both Michael Vaughan and @Lincsaddick are that Wood and Woakes would be better playing for their counties between now and the third Test, I disagree.
What games would they play between now and then that would benefit them more than working with the Test coaches? I don't think there are any.
It's not a question of working with Test coaches because that won't build improve their stamina. You make the county coaches sound as if they know nothing about fast bowling. They all have specialist fast bowling coaches who will work with those players in conjunction with talks with England. In fact, Yorkshire's head coach is Ottis Gibson. Are there many coaches better qualified than him?
It's a question of building up their match fitness. Both could have played in this round of county matches. But there are no opportunities before the next Test although, prior to the advent of The Hundred, there would have been because we wouldn't have been playing five Test matches in six weeks.
England must have known a few days ago that they wouldn't pick Wood, so could have released him on Saturday to play for Durham in their current game, with strict instructions as to how many overs he could bowl.

Their problem isn't technical, mindset or form which would be something to work with coaches on. Their problem is overs in the legs which you can only get in game situations. Stokes said himself regarding his knee after the last match that backing up spell after spell on consecutive days with hours in the field in between is very different from bowling controlled spells in the nets with a visit to the physio and sports massage specialists in between.
England are quite happy to release players to counties with stipulations about the number of overs they can bowl per innings/per day as they did with Sam Curran most of last season. Don't see why the same couldn't apply here.
It's easy to forget how tiring fielding is. 6 hours of standing in the field, walking between positions and regular sprints after the ball. You don't get that sort of fitness in the nets

Maybe I'm not being clear enough. I don't think Wood and Woakes can get enough bowling in red ball cricket between today and the start of the Third Test to be of any benefit.
Didn't Stokes say that Woods needed another weeks recovery, and would be ready for the next test, and it's not a case of going up to Durham to play
This is what he said:
"We wanted to play Mark Wood. We felt that he could definitely start the game, but with conversations we felt the extra week of build-up and getting his loads up would give him a better chance and an opportunity to play a full part from Leeds onwards."
We don't know why Woakes isn't playing and he hasn't played a red ball game in the last 7 weeks. Bowling 4 over white ball spells in T20 isn't going to get him match fit to bowl 30 overs plus in a Test.

Completely agree. But that's a different scenario.
I don't understand why they take lunch straight away. Without going full-Golfie, why do they take lunch part-way through an over, when the wicket falls two minutes before the scheduled break?
I think they should always complete the over in play.
Agreed - and it then doubly annoys me when they say 'and got the wicket of X with the last ball before lunch' when it was not the scheduled last ball of the over before lunch

Don't get me started on lunch, I'll get accused of starving the poor players to death again.

Should play through the day amd have a sushi belt type of thing thing running around the boundary, with various snacks going around. In between overs, a player can run over and grab a pork pie or cheese and cucumber sandwich.

96-2
Warner gone, bowled, 96-2.
The next two wickets will be critical.
