Vinyl

I’ve decided to get rid of the 195 remaining LP’s I’ve stored in various cupboards gathering dust  in the various places I’ve lived since my record buying days began, probably around 68/69.

Lots of sentimentality attached but if I remember rightly the last time I had a record deck was mid eighties and that would be the last time I played any albums. Three albums that spring to mind back then, Hatful of Hollow - The Smiths, Trans Europe Express - Kraftwerk and a Dwight Yokum album can’t remember which one.

I’ve toyed with the idea of buying a deck, amp and speakers but the condition of the albums aren’t good, so after much deliberation and pining over album cover artwork, I’m afraid it’s the old heave ho!

A friend has offered me £250 for the lot which isn’t much but saves on dragging round various record exchanges and maybe not doing much better price wise.

I’ve inserted visiting rights and a 10% sell on clause in the contract should he discover an incredibly rare and worth a lot album.

I will be in mourning for the next week or so:(.

Anybody else done the same?

Still got all mine in boxes in the garage.

They haven't seen the light of day since we moved here 15 years ago, but I just can't bring myself to get rid.

Just this week we decided to move on our music system, arthritic hands no longer allow me to press buttons or remove albums from sleeves or cds from cases so it’s all going along with a small collection of vinyl.
Saying that I love my Sonos I got for Christmas, I just ask it what to play from my computer and its done.

Don't know where you live, Martin, but Steve at Rollin Records in West Wickham would be a good bloke to talk to. Even if the discs are not of the genres he specialises in, he may be able to point you in the direction of someone who can give you a proper valuation.

Vinyl outsells CDs. You could easily get quadruple the amount offered by your friend.

Glad to see Discogs has already been mentioned - well worth getting everything on there initially as JS has said, v good way to baseline value and every chance there's one 12 in there that's worth what you've been offered.

Flogged all my vinyl early 2000's - worst thing I ever did.

Was still buying vinyl til late nineties - so had stuff like Live Wood by Paul Weller and The Great Escape/Parklife by Blur - these originals go for insane prices now, £200+ each.

Also a band called Porcupine Tree who were playing tiny venues at the time, so got nothing for their stuff - they now sell out Wembley Arena - I had a mint copy of their debut album (only 2,000 produced). Not going to look up what all their old stuff is worth now!

Gradually started replacing thru ebay/2nd hand shops and the the odd record fair. Been quite fun tbh. But only replacing favourites from 70's 80's. The 90's album prices are insane.

I'm in the same position. Have over a thousand records (three quarters singles) sitting in my garage, mostly from my days as a DJ some 40 or so years ago. Have almost all the albums in CD format now but it would be too painful to pass the vinyl on. Keep threatening the wife with bringing them into the house and as she's away for three weeks I might take the opportunity of doing just that. It will be her "welcoming back" surprise and I'm sure she will be elated when she sees them especially as she's no fan of music (if only she had given me a pound for every time she's asked me "do you really have to have it that loud to appreciate it?" I could probably have doubled my collection!)
They just don't understand, do they?
      ;)

Vinyl is 100% better sound than C.D.The range of music is greater.I also have about 300 45s singles. I have a C.D Recorder so I can transfer Vinyl to C D,which
is handy because some Albums are not availale on C D I then can play them in the car.

One of the reasons for getting rid is that I’ve just moved home, now NW8 and I wanted it to be a new start.

I’m just a bit tired of carrying old baggage both physical and emotional around with me that just sits in cupboards or storage space gathering dust for the next however long I’ve got.

All suggestions so far are very good, if one wants to spend time logging everything online and waiting perhaps indefinitely for maybe a good offer or lugging about selling at record fairs or exchanges. At the moment I don’t have transport, so that is an inevitable problem.

I probably have a collection of most people’s collections. I don’t think that in there, I could be wrong, I have any hidden gems.

Of course there’s huge sentimentality attached but am inclined to think sentimentality can get in the way of moving forward.

I’ve no doubt when they go, I’ll feel a huge pang of remorse but as I haven’t played any for the best part of 35 years chances are I won’t in the future.

I’m also trying to live a more minimalist lifestyle and what moving has brought to light is how much junk I’ve hung onto all these years. I’m trying to have with me things that have a use or serve a purpose. Cupboards are great but the downside is that things get put in that don’t ever see the light of day again.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.

This really is only for music geeks. It’s a blog about buying my first 30 albums, starting in Bromley.
    1969 to 1974.
I wrote it partly as a ‘letter’ to my kids.

PS My views on the albums I bought back then change almost with the seasons.

I read your post with interest!

I queued up outside a record shop in Woolwich the day Dark Side was released in 1973 so will be checking that one out (if I can find it amongst all the boxes).

Pretty sure I've got an initial copy of Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath as well.

    That's Sunday taken care of!!

Still has till have mine in the garage. They have been in and out of the house in the last five years due to the renovations. As soon as I get done flooring down in the middle floor lounge I'm planning on making that the music room and I'll set up shop properly in that room.

Still hanker after a Michell Gyrodeck I first saw in about 1979.... I've promised myself I'll get one before they box me up.

    This is quite timely.

I've not had a deck for maybe 15 years, but since moving and looking at all the records again I'm going to buy a Sonus speaker set and turntable for my office.

Had quite a few of those albums, amazed that the first sabbath record which I had on Vertigo is valued at £500, I also had the Faust record, when at art college, but got tired of it within a few weeks!ha ha....I am starting  to rebuild my vinyl collection , but  stick to a few artists, It amazes me there collections that fans have, especially paying thousands in some cases for pressings in obscure countries. ( which I have little interest in). I had a good collections of bootlegs in 68-75, but the quality of some of the recordings was pretty poor. I used to spend hours in central London record stores but, especially cheapo cheapo, the original Virgin in Oxford Street, where you could lounge about and listen to the latest bootleg, without any hassle.

Like many, I transferred over to CD, Partly because you could play them in the car, and  vinyl shops locally did not cater for the likes of Frank Zappa, and Hendrix.

Noticed a lot or Vinyl being re-issued, breaks your heart when you have sold it for £2-5, to realise it is now going for mega money these days...... and never played.

I have Facebook friends who  have 20-30 of  certain albums, I guess like all hobbies it becomes an addiction for some.

There is a record reseller near Meopham station that I am told will pay a fair price, and also 'Goldmine'  is very handy I am told by the serious dealers.

Got rid of most of my 70s / 80s vinyl with the advent of CD. Missed the big, physical and emotional experience of vinyl and so during lockdown, started recreating my selection, after getting a nice record deck and amp. Discogs has been a godsend!

I have sold collections of records twice in my life, my third collection is the biggest. I’ve some reissues that I’ve bought and remain in their shrinkwrap (Zeppelin, Hendrix, Bowie), in some ways they seem too precious to play although I know that’s crazy. I also have a much larger CD collection, they’re easy to handle and store but the detail that you can hear on vinyl is sometimes missing. I buy most of my vinyl in charity shops and they come with the occasional pop and crackle but are a real joy.

I've recently been given some records and bought a couple of my own choices. I don't have a record player ATM, can anyone recommend a good beginner setup?

A rega P1 is a good starter, or many old thorens can be picked up easily enough, get a separate phono stage as well, massive improvement on the inbuilt ones that come in amps
