Great performance, we look a different beast under Holden compared to Garner. Im still furious the ref blew up when we were clean through with an open goal at the end, surely it should have been played? Oh well, we won!
Despite the lack of goals from our central strikers this season; Leaburn is the exception(Stockley couldn't and Bonne is still trying) both Rak Sakyi and even on occasions Corey Blackett-Taylor can score from the wider forward positions in a 3 where they have licence to roam. Our problem is Rak Sakyi won't be here next season and if CBT could suddenly find composure he would score a dozen a season and be a Championship player. A two footed fast player who can go wide or cut inside is a no brainer for a Championship team. Not surprised Wigan were interested and who knows if the Edwards deal had come off....
Rak Saki should at least have a good career in the Championship if not higher. As long as you can do it for 60 minutes you have a career in the modern 16 man game if you are an attacking player. Rak Saki's stamina will be improving as he is playing every week and that's why Mark Bright gave the green light to Steve Parish for him to stay ( No Gallagher situation)
I believe they are trying to make sure that Miles Leaburn isn't used as a battering ram in his first season in men's football. So Holden will pick and chose his games. With 3 games some weeks Miles will get plenty of games and so will Bonne. I hope ML body isn't still growing up after hearing a comment last week !

Thought the ball was in their half and we'd just overcome a late free kick when he blew. Did not see a clean through open goal scenario??

Ah fair enough, from the highlights it looked that way, but if not then I stand corrected 👍
I know Dobson got done for their goal but he showed for much of the game what a quality player he is. I love a player who is always trying to do something positive with the ball and isn't frightened of failing. Add that to his competitive game and we have somebody we need to try to build our team around. Kilkenny gave us real battling qualities despite lacking in playing time and for a first game it looks to me that the midfield we have is going to get better and better with him in it.
We would have lost that game not long ago as the defence would have capitualted. Whilst Exeter moved the ball forwatrds quickly and indeed accurately, We defended well in the second half which is not what we have been seeing. In all honesty, the best chance of the half was where their keeper made a great save from CBT. We can look at the AMB save at the death but I don't think there was the pace on the ball that you wouldn't expect him to save it.
Our attacking play has been frustrating but the question, which I had given up on to be honest was how he would get the attributes of our wide players to terrorise defenders. If you get it right it is not easy for League One defenders and defensively, in midfield and attack Holden seems to get us heading in the right direction. The big question is are we on a journey where we will improve further or will form or injuries put a spoke in the wheel? Is Holden getting us playing to our full potential or has he set us on a path to reach that potential?
If we are already at our peak with the players we have, we will indeed finish in mid table. Are we at our peak though? That is the question and the coming games will play a large part in showing us.
We look more dangerous when Leaburn is on the pitch compared to Bonne. Leaburn is just a better all round player. I'm confused by Holden's preference of Bonne.
Iv got a feeling holden is giving leaburn abit of a rest even with him doing well so far this season he has been slightly over used and played especially being brought back in so soon from injury due to a lack of options with aneke out and stockley so bad we forget his age and that he is still learning his trade
100% agree.
I remember Wayne Rooney coming on for Everton at The Valley and terrorising us when he was only 17 or 18. But he was a bit of a freak.
I said last season after the 3-2 defeat to Morecambe at home, that Dobson would turn into a Midfield player that can not only close teams down but will become a really good passing midfielder and wait for it, would start to score goals ! It was bad timing by me to be positive on a day when we conceded 3 bad goals and the comments were a Tsunami of Shite which covered any positivity.
At Least we have George until the end of this season and he has been a true trier over two seasons. Like him to be given a quality longer contract to show we have some ambition. We can't keep stagnating.
The pace and positivity of his passing signalled the passage of the game where you had to pinch yourself to remember that you were watching Charlton and of course where the two goals eminated from.
I recall a game, I think it was against forest, in the Championship where we played in the first half as good as I can recall a Charlton team playing. Of course we ended up drawing that game and got relegated so showing it is there isn't always the same as making part of you as a team. That is the challenge for Holden and hopefully he will get the lady luck he needs if he rises to it.
Another thing is our away record. If you look at the attributes of our side, I would say we should be a deadly away side. We have won our last two but before that our away record has been poor. Solid defence and pace and trickiness up fron. With a top notch midfield we ought to be as good a side away as anybody at this level.
A tight game and an excellent three points, which keeps us well away from the lower reaches of the table.
Exeter started aggressively on the front foot and after conceding three corners in the first few minutes, I was worried that it was going to be a long afternoon. Fortunately, we settled down and two lovely passes from Dobbo and Ness put in JRS (a great volley) and CBT to finish clinically. Unfortunately, clean sheets are not our bag and poor defending all round saw us concede a soft goal around the half hour mark. Thereafter, Exeter dominated, targeting our right side, where Clare’s lack of positional sense and defensive nous was exposed. It was backs to wall stuff and we were grateful to get in still ahead at half time, courtesy of a couple of good blocks and a decent save from Maynard-Brewer.
We made a very passive and nervy start to the second half but, happily, things quietened down and there were few opportunities at either end. Although Exeter had more territory (and won the final corner count by 13-4), we had the best chance of the half, with CBT drawing an outstanding point blank range from their goalie when he got on the end of a low cross. We contained Exeter well, although in our customary nervy finish, AMB pulled off an excellent save in the 5th minute of injury time - he really is a hugely reassuring figure between the posts.
Ness had another fine game at the back. His judgment and reading of the game is outstanding for a lad with only a dozen first team games under his belt. Inniss was dominant in the air and Penney had a better game than last week. Clare picked up in the second half after a poor showing in the first.
In midfield, there good debut from Kilkenny, who looks a tidy, energetic player, who helps to knit things together. He covered a lot of ground - especially for someone who hasn’t played a first team game since August - and we need that, given that our wingers and Scott Fraser have a tendency to sometimes run out of steam towards the end of games.
Up front, Bonne worked hard with little in the way of service and had one decent effort from the edge of the box, when he brought the ball down, turned the defender and got a shot away. He doesn’t, however, have Leaburn’s speed and power, in consequence of which, we found it difficult at times to make the ball stick up top and bring others into play. I hope Miles starts next week, given that it will be four weeks since he last did so.
Hopefully we can push on in the next two games against Fleetwood and Forest Green before we take on the division’s two in-form sides, Derby and Wednesday. Perhaps one or two more of our players will be fit for selection by then - we live in hope.
Question is .. is Gavin Kilkenny the new Connor Gallagher ???
Nah. He was good but not CG level.
CG was head and shoulders best player on the field from the moment he came off the bench for his debut at Ewood Park. Remember watching that cameo and thinking wow we’ve got a proper talent on our hands.

Seems a little like the old Lee Bowyer tactic - get Omar Bogle to do all the grunt work and tire out the oppo CBs. Then, Bingo! ...... on comes Chuks to win the points.
Bonne grinds down the CBs before on comes Leaburn to score the goals. Simple!
Looked a relatively easy finish from where I was behind the goal. Completely unchallenged at the back post unfortunately
Far from easy strike. Their player still had to meet that volley high on the run, through the back of Rak-Sakyi's airy-fairy challenge on the cross. Player showed good anticipation, determination and technique.
From where I was standing behind the goal, it rifled high in the back of the net. Good strike.

Just listening to Charlton Live. One of the comms was adamant that Exeter's goal was offside. Quite cringeworthy, at times, how there is always such an injustice when we concede!

Offside? The Exeter number 11 was played onside by Ness, which led to the Exeter number 2 running down the wing to the cornerflag with the ball before turning and crossing for the goal by the Exeter number 7, who made a late unmarked run from the edge of the box to score.
Enjoyed the game yesterday. Kilkenny will smash it when fully up to speed. Never stop believing everyone. We are very lucky to have Dean Holden. He does get it . UTA.

I'd say of all the things to worry about, the prospect of our players like CBT improving to becoming championship quality, would be just about bottom of any long list of problems that I could think of right now. It's quite possibly our best way out of this division for the foreseeable.

Considering we had played about 2 minutes more than the 5 minutes stoppage time, I think it made sense to blow the final whistle.

Always bang on the money, for which I'm grateful, as so many often seem to watch an entirely different game.
