D Day

  • My Uncle Den was 100 on June 3rd.

He is literally the last man standing from 48 Royal Marine Commando.  48 Commando joined the Canadians on Juno beach, just a few days after his 20th birthday.

Not wanting to be disrespectful to the others in this picture, but what has Charlie-boy done to deserve all those medals?

What a hero (your Uncle, not the other geezer)

Not as much as uncle Den that’s for sure!

Wasn’t he captain of a ship patrolling around the North Atlantic/ North Sea during the Cold War ?   Between dealing with the sea and the Soviets they would have earned one or two medals for starters. Playing chicken with Icelandic ships and boats in those waters during the Cod War wouldn’t have been that pleasant a time either.

You've got good genes if you take after him, he doesn't look a day over 70! And all power to him, a proper hero.

Nice to see that he is a Chevalier...

Because the people who destroyed the Nazis deserve every honour going.

Was he awarded it this year?
  • Uncle Den's dad lived to 99 @IdleHans - sadly my own father just 77 - which I'm uncomfortably close to.

Den was awarded the Legion of Honour a few years ago @NornIrishAddick. I think I'm right in saying all surviving veterans from Normandy were awarded the medal. He certainly had it when I last met him two years ago.  He brought the medal along with him.  He is rightly immensely proud of it  I grouped these photos together following that occasion (showing both sides of the medal, Den at the time + the original marine one).

Den has lived in France near the Spanish border with his daughter for the last 8 or 9 years.

Den's military record is well documented here.

    Thank you for the information.

There were some, including to a Wren, awarded this year.

I know the French are very keen to recognise everyone involved with D-Day, I think it's something they do really well.
