Wasn't there an interview not that long ago where he said he'd not been offered anything? But he sounded up for signing at the time.
  • If we are turning down bids from Championship clubs you would think the chances of him signing another contract with us in L1 are next to zero as he will.leave for free in the summer.
Back to hoping we find a way to improve in the January window, get in the play offs and win them as him, Leaburn and Small are 3 players who can step up to the Championship and all will be gone if we don't go up.
Jones can definitely step up to the Championship. Hopefully it can be with us.

I wonder. Easy to forget how badly he lost his head last season and stepping up a level to a league as tough as the Championship in a new team might be hard for him. He's a very Nathan Jones player in that he just needs to be a strong  tackler and a face for smashing footballs off. I guess we'll probably see

He’s also subtly comfortable on the ball. It’s not noticeable compared to other CBs we’ve had who spray passes around or bring the ball out of defence, but he’s decent on the ball and not just a very solid L1 CB.

Depends who those Championship teams are. If they're solid mid table teams then fair point but struggling teams like Plymouth, Portsmouth etc then there's no guarantees they'll be in a higher division than us next season.
  • If Scott didn't offer him a new contract last August/September time, he should be dismissed for gross misconduct. It was blatantly clear how crucial he was to us.

Of course he could have turned down our offers, but that was the time to tie him down, not now when he has 6 months left.
  • A defensive collosus. He organises everything and as at Lincoln,he steamed into Mitchell for getting done by Kone for their goal.

He was the one trying to block the shot, even though Small was nearest, but seemed more interested in putting his hands behind the back.

Imperative we sign him as the rock for a promotion push, most likely next season.

Mitchell and Jones are a great pairing.
Just think,  it wasn’t that long ago Lavelle and OConnell were the pairing . A 100 per cent upgrade.

ps  Both Barnsley goals against Wrexham yesterday were down to OConnell mistakes.
I do recall some people here thought OConnell was decent. I always thought he was a terrible player. He was just lucky to have Lavelle next to him who was even worse.

It would be a massive signal from the owners that they are not very ambitious if they flog him. ATM we have a decent shot at promotion without him we have none as we won’t replace him with anyone equal in January
It would be a massive signal from the owners that they ARE very ambitious if they offer Lloyd a contract he's unlikely to refuse.

Ditto with Miles and Thierry but this standout defender is a player we can't afford to lose IF we have serious ambition to be promoted in the current season or the next.

Not only would "pushing the boat out" send a positive message to supporters but also his fellow players - a win win IMO.

Time for the owners to show they're prepared to walk the walk.

O’Connell has started 20 out of 22 games this season for the team with the best defensive record in the league.  He’s also Wrexham’s top-performing player according to FotMob.

I’d still say he’s decent.  Maybe playing alongside Innis and Lavelle was the issue?

O'Connell wouldn't have got into Powell or Bowyer's teams. I also wouldn't put him ahead of Mitchell and/or Jones it was decent business to move him on.

The Charlton propensity for own goals is what worries me. The dead weight, of which we have a few, fair enough.

Agreed , decent business moving him on.
For me Mitchell and Jones are miles ahead of OConnell. I’m shocked he is their top performing player. He is very slow with a mistake always in him. Saying that despite them doing surprisingly well they have no more than 2 or 3 players I would want in the Charlton team.

Take a look at the Barnsley highlights from yesterday.

We're either building a promotion winning team or we're not. Getting his contract extended is a must.

It would be a travesty if we don’t give him what he wants but you just know we won’t .

If he is still with us in February without signing an extension, I'll take that as he will be gone in the summer on a free.

Jones is 29 years old. If a club offers him silly money on a 3 year deal then in my opinion he will be daft to turn it down

Then let that club be us….
….but you know it won’t and he’ll sign on a free for Middlesbrough or someone like that in July.

    Precisely.
What's the point of Nathan Jones spending 12 months on sorting out the defence only to having it torpedoed as soon as he does?
Lloyd Jones is the main man and his contract must be renewed.

I overheard what sounded like a very credible discussion yesterday, in which it was said that the club have turned down two relatively derisory offers for Jones from Wycombe and really want to hold onto the player. In reality, though, if a Championship team comes in for the player, that will not be possible given the chasm in wages.

If we sold him it would be worse than when we sold May

I don't see why he would want to move to Wycombe this month anyway, they're hardly a L1 giant like Birmingham who are 99% certain to go up, or a "glamour" club like Wrexham. I doubt the payrise would be that much either.

Exactly. With all due respect, Wycombe is a very small club and I have my doubts as to whether they’ll stay the pace. I suspect that Lloyd will await the outcome of this season and see what his options are club-wise and contractually.

If the owners did decide to cash in, they would face an absolute shit storm from our supporters.
