Shaun Newton was pretty rapid in his day. And Rufus pre knee injuries. I still remember once, away at Birmingham, Rufus making up so much ground on a Birmingham player that was through one-on-one on our goal, that he started outside my field of vision before catching up with the striker and dispossessing him with a perfect sliding tackle. I think Rufus is certainly the fastest centre back we ever had. Not fast enough to outrun the law though!
Since giving up football both Newton and Rufus have been running down a different kind of wing.
Lost count the amount of times he'd run from deep, only for whoever was on the ball at the time to look up, then pass sideways instead. He'd then jog back into position only for us to then pass to him once he'd been faced up by his full back.
So frustrating.
Top speed wise Darren Bent was absolutely rapid too, remember him absolutely creaming Melchiot in a foot race.
He was actually fast enough over 100 metres to have qualified for the Olympics. I doubt any other Charlton players we're faster.
He was fast. Last seen running over the goal line, past the Jimmy Seed, up Floyd Road and heading towards the Blackwall tunnel, having lost the ball somewhere around the edge of the six yard box.

But Blackett-Taylor uses his pace exactly how Dennis should have done.
Very rapid; however, most of the time he never had the ball at his feet.

100 m Dennis in the last minute.
5-10 yards Killer.
Once in motion, over a longer distance, Benty (Dazza)
