Balloon releases are extremely harmful to wildlife and as much as people may want to remember someone's life, there are better ways of doing it than causing so much damage to the natural world. This link gives some suggestions.
The bloke was a fan who done quite a bit for charity and who took his own life relatively publicly. Personally can't see how people clapping in his memory would trigger anyone. It's not compulsory to join in and it's not like it's being arranged officially by the Club.
Mate people think clapping triggers people hence Americans now snapping fingers instead of applauding.
Whilst it can trigger some people, it's a tiny minority and I doubt they'd be at the footy.
