I had the funeral on in the background while doing other stuff. Very impressive send-off. Then Cait got up and sang I'm a Man You Don't Meet Every Day, with the arrangement tweaked just slightly to turn it into more of a lament than a drinking song, and I'm afraid I was in bits after that.
No idea how many times saw the Pogues over the years. Cricketers gigs were favourite. Waltzing Matilda and the TMTCH Greenfields of France were an amazing bit of musical synchronicity.
I watched the whole bloody lot while working… I was late for the pub because it went on so long.
As funerals go that was a wonderful spectacle. The music was fantastic.. Nick Cave singing my favourite Rainy Night in Soho got me.. the priest holding up a box of Barry’s tea. And the cover of Fairytale and his family dancing… just wow!
But his wife’s eulogy was totally bonkers. When she mentioned he used to take 100 tabs of acid a day, she found him once in the attic speaking to Freddy Krueger, or once watched him come down the stairs eating a Beach Boys record.. all while the President of Ireland sat in the front row looking on. It was car crash telly but I loved it.
@guinnessaddick I spotted Andy from the Biblecodes playing at the service. What a privilege.

He did pop over a month or so to visit him, he played on the RTE set when they did a “This is your life” thing for Shane a few years back.
