It's all very well saying 'get it into his feet and watch him come alive' but if he isn't going to show a leg, he'll never receive the ball in a dangerous area because he'll be so deep still.

Anyway, hopefully he has several extra gears. Otherwise he's a very skillful traffic cone. Jones has alluded to him not being match-fit so I'll try not to be too harsh for a few more weeks. But if he's still walking around while the opposition get the ball into our half after the international break, I'll be pitiless
Thats fair... and when he does eventually come good... I think I'm going to start tagging those who are already prepared to write him off, as a reminder to start having some f**king patience in the future, maybe one day people will learn... But doubt it... Because to start being "pitiless" I mean what’s it really going to achieve?
I'm not going to hunt him with hounds, I just won't buy any excuses. I will be 'less' of 'piti'
The same way those were right to allow no excuses from Campbell or Leaburn whilst they adjusted to Championship Football and struggled a lot last year?
Thats worked out well hasn't it... the Campbell thread has oddly gone deathly quiet... Can't think why

If Mbick is worth £7M right now, then Leaburn must be £12M and TC £20M.

Showed some good skill once we got the ball to him but too much of the game just bypassed him.
Mbick isn't worth £7m right now... Brighton / Southampton will be paying that to sign his potential ahead of anyone else who might want to benefit from him
It means they can all clearly see something, and if they did sign him for that money, he's either going straight back into the U21s or out on loan - Its a measure of how broken finances are in Football right now, and is a measure of how long we've been away from the top table given the mentality a lot are having.
This is it exactly. Brighton especially will hoover up these EFL talents for £7-12m and back themselves to develop them they spent £10m 2 years ago on Tommy Watson from Sunderland who has barely featured for their first team yet and has had loans at Millwall and Leicester, Mbicks size and skillset is hard to find in a young player so I'm not surprised there's bags of interest. Bit of young English striker tax thrown in too of course like there always is.

I'm not that bothered about how he looks in 20 min cameos with no service when he's working his way back from his first major injury of his career.

He should have had another loan this season. We are not blessed for goals up front and sadly our strikers are injury prone, so he will get more championship minutes than he is ready for.
We will benefit next season more from him playing championship this season. Leaburn and TC have been 2 of our best players this season, which wouldn’t have happened if they’d gone out to league 1 last season rather than a year learning the championship
Mbick doesn't look anywhere near the levels of Leaburn when he first came into the side. Unfortunately with the players we have on the sidelines we don't really have the luxury of developing him properly with a few appearances here and there.

He might have to play 90 mins on Saturday if Leaburn and the rest are still out, and he doesn't look ready for that at this level.

Leaburn first came into the side in league 1, so yes Mbick doesn’t look that good while playing unfit in sub appearances in the championship. Mbick did look that good in league 2 though, in fact maybe better but it’s a lower level. Which is why England, Brighton and Southampton are interested

I'm not criticising his quality or end product. I'm questioning his desire to fight for us
Frankly I’m amazed he’s playing at all after his serious injury at the end of last season. He’s found himself thrust into a higher level of football than he’s ever played whilst possibly still recovering mentally from his previous injury.

Too early to judge him in my opinion.

I don’t understand why people are still using the £5m bids against him by saying they can’t see a player worth that. These other teams are not planing to pay £5m for Mbick and have him as one of their main strikers. They’ll have bought him and secured a league one (probably) season loan. We are currently not in that situation due to the injuries we have, so Mbick is currently needed in our championship squad, whether or not Nathan and co would prefer to have him improving in the league below.
  • I’d personally like to hear which other striker we have could get the ball outside of our own penalty area, beat two players and then play a sublime ball for grant like he did last night?

Can someone please remind me how long he has of his current contract left?

2028, but we've got the option of an extension until 2029

Sounds like he's in discussions anyway about an extension beyond that from what NJ said pre Stoke.
  • Well we may well see him start on Saturday. Am really interested to see how he gets on.

I couldn’t watch the match last night or WBA the week before, but I really want to see what he can do in a game where we have a lot more of the ball and he get a few chances to score and create.

From watching the academy streams regularly over the last couple of years what’s clearer to me is just how much some players can improve (and yes others don’t), and how much more you know from watching a player over time in a number of games, rather than a few appearances.

We can all guess but a young player especially can look a very different player in a short space of time for various reasons. Mbick has those potential reasons - so far he’s returned earlier than expected from a serious injury, he’s come off the bench as a lone striker and not seen much of the ball, and it’s his first season at this level.

I’d much rather we gave him until at least January before reassessing than loan him out and spend money on a journeyman who might be a bit better in the short term but doesn’t have the potential that Mbick has.

Cant see him starting think doing 30min a game is about it at the moment, can see Grant and TC (if fit) being paired up top unless Kelman is ready

From my point of view, Mbick and Mwamba are positive additions to the squad. Are they the finished article? Absolutely not. Are they going to guarantee the sort of performances we desperately want (because we are either insanely ambitious or terrified of another difficult end to the season) ? Again, absolutely not. However I think they are both players that we can "take a punt on" as supporters, and who might give us moments of delirious glee (yes I'm trying to be optimistic). Equally they could disappoint us badly, but provided they do that while working their socks off to the best of their ability I'm not going to criticise them. And the best part is that  they aren't on loan from other clubs!

Leaburn has also had a lot of bad injuries. But when he's on the pitch, he presses, snaps into the challenge, shows for it, fights. Mbick spent almost every minute he was on the pitch shuffling about watching QPR stroll past him
Leaburn has finally had a full Pre-Season... and has had a summer to go away and work on his strength without needing to think about recovery
I mean, he probs needs to think about some recovery now….

First Ouma, now Mbick. Why can't we get off our players backs.  This league is relentless and incredibly tough both technically and physically.

As much as people are saying he's nowhere near Leaburn's level - how many of you were saying last year Miles was useless and should be loaned out or sold?  It takes time to adapt.  Factor in Micah had a serious injury in January and it's going to take a while to get up to speed and to trust his body fully (just like it did Leaburn after his injuries)

Miles has flourished since he had a full and proper pre-season and Micah hasn't had that luxury so is playing catchup.

Brighton rarely get it wrong when it comes to transfers and they definitely tried pulling our pants down with £3m initial bid - but they have clearly seen something in him so maybe we should support our player rather than destroying a 19 year old finding his way
    ... but apart from that.....

No way can he be judged yet on a handful of cameos. He's coming back off a bad injury and is only 19. Impossible to form an opinion either way.

If Miles isn't fit for Portsmouth I'd like to see him given a chance from the start.

  • I've seen his shirt appearances this season and have to say I have been very impressed by his skill levels on the ball.  Looks so natural and skillful.  His size means he will need a few years to grow into his body (like Leaburn) and start to dominate defenders.  His injury means he will need a few games to trust his body and charge around more.  His coming on for a few minutes to a team without possession makes him isolated up too.
He will come good and go for a lot of money at some point in his career.
