Micah Mbick

Don’t think Mbick should be starting for the 1st team yet in any position, and certainly not at the expense of Kelman and also if Leaburn is on the pitch aswell.9
-
We have come to crowbarring players in positions again, says it about our recruitment. Neither of them are doing what they need to in they’re natural positions, harsh on Leaburn but he needs to score goals, not just battle every game.NabySarr said:Neither Leaburn or Mbick are number 10s and neither of them should be playing there2 -
People are expecting far too much out of him. Unfortunately when it comes to strikers and wingers, fans look at just one number and players get judged by it. Miles suffers from the same.I didn’t think he was actually that bad on Saturday, had a good moment flicking the ball over the defender.
TC is three years and two months ahead of him. Three years ago TC was being called all manner of names at Gillingham away in the cup.
Give the boy some time.12 -
maybe in your world and maybe not in this system but Leaburn's game is entirely that of a number 10 back in the day - comes short, holds it up, acts as a foil for the main striker, can pick a pass - mark hughes, dennis bergkamp, eric cantona - all number 10's in the traditional sense, whether they wore 10 or notNabySarr said:Neither Leaburn or Mbick are number 10s and neither of them should be playing there1 -
I think people are commenting on what they see, and in general the consensus is that there is obviously something about him, however the time he should be given shouldn’t be in the 1st team yet. Miles unfortunately is suffering due to our lack of creativeness and finds himself battling too far from goal, so absolutely he needs to be cut some slack, but he needs to get himself into goal scoring areas aswell, he needs to make that decision.Callumcafc said:People are expecting far too much out of him. I think the expectation comes from the fact that he started for the first 11 in a league game. If he is going to do that, he is going to be expected to affect the game in some way.

He had the most shots of anyone on the pitch, nearly scored from a corner, was well placed to receive TC's cross if Grant didn't and followed the shot in, and won most of his duels. I think without Mbick and Leaburn in the box Grant doesn't have the space he does to score. I'm not saying Mbick was great by any stretch but to say he didn't affect the game just seems like confirmation bias to meCroydon said:I think the expectation comes from the fact that he started for the first 11 in a league game. a Number 10 back in the day and a mordern number 10 are completely different roles to be fair. I think the terminology isnt helping.DOUCHER said:

I thought he was pretty anonymous Saturday to be fair, bar a couple of moments of skill that he then ballsed up. Interestingly I saw him down at Crawley last season and he also played the "10" role for Col U, without much success in fairness, but its clearly somewhere managers see him capable of playing.0

Think it’s absolutely hilarious people judging Mbick now, when we have examples of this season in both Leaburn and TC who both have been in our top 5 performers this season what happens when you give youngsters time.Come off a long injury didn’t have a preseason and not even played his best position so he has more reason not to hit the ground running as wel14

Thought Saturday was the first time he didn't look terrified of his knee going again as well. Still not sure he got fully up to top speed but it was an encouraging signCrispywood said:Think it’s absolutely hilarious people judging Mbick now, when we have examples of this season in both Leaburn and TC who both have been in our top 5 performers this season what happens when you give youngsters time.Come off a long injury didn’t have a preseason and not even played his best position so he has more reason not to hit the ground running as wel5 -
Between little moments with us this season and highlights from Colchester last season I can see Mbick has some great physical attributes and has technical ability to go with it.
Bringing all that together is the next step but look how long it’s taken TC, and then we have Leaburn who is getting there but needs to score more goals (partly on him with his movement and partly the team to create more).
Mbick is still only 19 and returning from a major injury, in which he put in a lot of work to be back fit from earlier than expected.
I think the size of the bids hasn’t helped, it’s created this expectation that a player worth that should stand out for us. The offers are based on where he could be in 3-4 years time, and being a young English striker only increases the price.
At some point all going well he’ll start changing opinions but as with Mwamba and Fullah it might not happen as quick as we’d like it to.7 -
Still think he should be out on loan getting a full season under his belt. I feel we are just giving him game time here and there to keep his 'team' happy who think because he's had interest from Brighton and Southampton then he deserves to be in our first team. Nowhere near ready for the Championship, yet, in my opinion.4

Echo the comments about having patience with Micah and how far TC and Miles have come in the last couple of years.
If I could pick a shortlist of our current players who had to stay at Charlton for the rest of their careers he'd be in the top 4 along with Big Billy, TC and Miles........0 -
The “can pick a pass” bit is where I really disagree. He can’t and that’s one of the most important bits. And that’s just on the ball, yes back in the day he might have been fine there, but the modern game requires a lot more out of possession from a number 10.DOUCHER said:

And there’s people saying ship him out on loan. TC and Leaburn would not be playing like they are now in the championship if they hadn’t had a year learning the championship. We will benefit long term from Mbick playing in the championship this season, even if in the short term it is tough for himCrispywood said:Think it’s absolutely hilarious people judging Mbick now, when we have examples of this season in both Leaburn and TC who both have been in our top 5 performers this season what happens when you give youngsters time.Come off a long injury didn’t have a preseason and not even played his best position so he has more reason not to hit the ground running as wel8 -

As long as we stay up experimenting with him. By which time if he is as good as people suggest won’t be with us.NabySarr said:

In this system, yes, we need somebody who can be a workhorse /drop more into midfield i guess although i think Jones is hoping that skipp and coventry's workrate (rather than ability) will make up for this - which it doesn't, particularly as skipp isn't very dynamic - he wants to sit and cover. But i think i'm right in saying Leaburn's set most of TC's goals up. I don't agree that he can't pick a pass and if we were playing 2 up top, he should be the 10, not the 9.NabySarr said:

Fairly concerned about my memory here because I don't remember a single meaningful shot from him, or this chance from a corner.fenaddick said:

Would have liked him to have a League one loan. He is nowhere near a Championship striker. At the risk of getting stick, I don’t see what Brighton see in him. His physicality was a boon in the U21s but the Championship is full of big physical defenders. Not his fault that Jones played him as a number ten.5

His highlights from Colchester were very impressive. That doesn't mean he's Championship ready, but does suggest he can handle the physicality of men's football.DennisBooth said:Would have liked him to have a League one loan. This is exactly where I'm at with him. I've seen enough flashes that I'm fine with having him around the first team squad same with Mwamba. Don't want to rely on him too much yet and starting him was a bit of a surprise on Saturday.Scoham said:Between little moments with us this season and highlights from Colchester last season I can see Mbick has some great physical attributes and has technical ability to go with it.

Young English strikers that score goals in the EFL and have the physical attributes of Mbick at his age are always going to attract attention. English striker tax probably slightly boosts the price but clubs are bidding on the upside with him.6 -
Think we all agree he needs time, would be a lot easier if he had 10 players around him that can carry the expectations.3

100% we were all saying it before the game, and jones got them in the wrong positions!!Swisdom said:
He's not a #10, that's what the problem is. He's a striker. Play him in front of Leaburn and let Miles do the #10 role maybe but Mbick is a striker. He needs games to get into his rhythm - not a game, then a few weeks out - then half an hour. He needs consistent games and to build a relationship with Miles. Could be a bit like Kermorgant and BWP (except Mbick isn't a little man) but if he can feed off a flick from the big man then we could have something there.....but that means playing two attackers consistentlyhoof_it_up_to_benty said:Looked completely lost on Saturday. No idea what his potential is but surely better getting regular football to aid his development. Needs a loan....0 -
9 League games in and Mbick was the 4th different player this season to start a league match in the 10 role.
The boy is a 9 and was unfair on him to play him as a 10 in my opinion

I would start him again tomorrow0

That’s the balance we need to strike. We managed to stay up last season while giving TC and Leaburn minutes to develop them. We need to do the same with Mbick and Mwamba this seasonSword65pf said:

What would he expect Brighton and Southampton to do with him then?Athletico Charlton said:I suspect the issue is that having seen the interest from Brighton and Southampton he has likely had his head turned and the only chance of keeping him/getting him to sign longer is putting him in our team. Better for his development would appear to be a League One loan but I doubt he will be enthralled with that idea.
Although admittedly they would both pay him a lot more which would probably help.0
