  • I'd say they're at a similar level - Coventry has more control, Dobson has more gusto. Both are very good at this level. Coventry's attributes probably have a higher ceiling but in L1 there's not much to choose between them. I really do wonder whether Dobson in for Docherty would make us better. I suspect, perhaps
  • Won man of the match in the lounges today .
i would have given it to Godden , someone who wins the match over someone who stops us losing every day of the week .

    Coventry has been outstanding recently

Godden doesn’t get his goal without Coventry’s pass though. Both were brilliant

Is he fit to lace Dobson's boots now?
  • Superb performance. Reads the game so well, feel like he’s found a home now
  • He was good today. I've not seen anything like all of his games but today he showed me that he could become a very decent rounded midfielder. Goals could be a draw-back but fitness, desire and an eye for possibilities look to be there.

Coventry is better than Dobson. If he gets injured or suspended we are fucked
Which is sort of the point really - we could have played both, and also if he got injured and Dobson was still here, we'd have been less f**ked.
  • Dobson would be a good squad player for cover but not good enough to make the 1st team, or indeed for the step up to the Championship IMO.

Played a pivotal role in stopping us getting relegated so will be fondly remembered.
  • I wonder if Coventry will make the next Ireland squad automatically, as he's playing much better now than when he was called up as an injury replacement.

Would be fun to see Coventry and Cullen playing together.
  • Thought today was his best game for us by some way.

Agree with this. Also people say glad we've kept small, leaburn and jones. But I'm also glad there's no interest in conor **yet**
  • Said many times Dobson not in the same league as Coventry … Coventry Doc and Berry as a three not much better in this league
  • How many matches does he need to go without a booking before he avoids a ban
  • Coventry outstanding yesterday and getting better with each game of a settled team around him. But from what I gather, Dobson is cruising to Wrexham player of the season.

They’re both outstanding talents at the level.

Jones seems to prefer more disciplined players though than mavericks which is why Godden and Coventry seem to fit his style more than Dobson and May.

Think it’s something mad like 9

A point in Coventry's favour is that Dobson does big obvious things that fire up the fans like huge tackles and Cruyff turns away from the marker, which tends to overshadow any positional weaknesses that might creep in now and again
I think a lot of that was also down to how badly organised the teams Dobson was playing in were, but do agree. Yesterday Cov seemed to have a telepathic sense of where he needed to be to snuff out danger, outstanding performance

It's a difference in approach I think, Dobson makes smashing tackles to win the ball off someone, Coventry will instead step in at the right moment to intercept the pass and stop that player even getting the ball.

Neither is inherently better or worse, there's strengths and flaws to both but Coventry's style is more to Jones' taste for better or worse.
  • One of the best things about Coventry initially was he let us get the most out of Dobson. I never really rated Dobson that highly as a controlling pivot like we wanted him to be but I liked him further forward driving, tackling and spreading the play. I don’t think there’s any value in comparing the two as they play that role very differently.
Sounds like what happened at Wrexham as well, they initially started him as the ‘6’ but moved him to more of an ‘8’ where he seems to the be thriving.

    Is he?

Got dropped for Matty James for a few weeks until McClean crashed his car and Dobson came back in.
  • Coventry always seems to be absolutely everywhere for an interception and pass back out. He's not as flashy as Dobson - a man we will remember with a little more clarity for his nutmegs and roulettes. As Leuth says above, that means he has a greater immediate impression on fans.

But in the way this team is currently set up... Dobson over Doc (again as said above) would improve us; Dobson over Coventry would weaken us. Coventry is much better positionally and while he's not full of defence-splitting passes, he's incisive enough to ask questions. I think we would lose an awful lot if he were ever to be absent from the lineup - he dictates tempo, the point of attack, and is a fantastic first line of defence when out of position.

I'd love to be able to compare him properly with Josh Cullen. He isn't there yet. But if he keeps playing like this, he might get there.
  • Between him and Jones for PotY so far for me - may well have been Ramsay but fir injury.

Good that there'll be a few options for once, rather than Dobson, someone who's leaving and even the person in 3rd being pretty rubbish, like the last few years.
Indeed! Tyreece has got to be in with a shout of POTY too. He'd be my choice at this moment in time with Jones and Cov very close. Coventry was very good yesterday and deserved his MOTM.
  • Hope Newcastle beat them in the league cup final for a start.
