  • He's a good back up at this level.
  • With his pace and power he has loads of potential if he can become consistent and improve his end product when getting forward.
  • He has a far higher ceiling that’s for sure and I would love him to sign a new contract but I think that would have happened by now if it was going to.

Like Ahadme, got a feeling that, given time, he's gonna turn out to be a decent player. Like his attitude and he seem to be popular amongst the other players
Hopefully for us yes, but we need him to sign that bloody contract soon, or he will be gone by Christmas I reckon...
  • If he moves again, that will be his 6th club and he's only 20. Seems like a player who is poorly advised.

Wouldn't that depend on where he moves to?

But yes, he has moved around a lot already so probably won't see moving again as an issue.

If his next club is a good move, that will be 6th time lucky, so doesn't exactly scream career wisdom

To be totally fair, one could argue that staying here isn't best for his career either, he's not first choice and we are rubbish. But we do know a thing or two about helping young players develop

  • Pleased for him that he's been called up by the U20 England squad but I wonder how much harder it will make it to get him to sign a new deal.

His agent will certainly see it as warranting a big wage and also highlights his ability to other clubs, as if they didn't know already.

Yet he's not starting with a mid-table league one side.
He isn’t starting because he isn’t the best left back at the club.

i would change to 4-2-3-1 and have him in a more attacking role in front of Edwards.

I would definitely accommodate both Edwards and Small.
Thierry lost his way a tad with the loans to Port Vale and St Mirren ( and Charlton !) but he doesn't lack confidence and the right manager will see his strength and encourage him to take on his full back and cross.
    He can do it.

The youngest ever Everton player at 16 will get his career back on track, unfortunately it won't be with CAFC after this season.
Agree with you both, only chance of getting any width to this team.

I like Edwards but he struggles to get over the halfway line.  Agree with SBS, we need to accommodate both.
  • Easy way to accommodate both is in a back 3 with Edwards at LCB but that causes issues with the rest of the balance of the team. When Jones is fit it could mean MG doesn't have to play too

It’s an option. I thought that would happen when we signed Edwards.  The issue with that is that we still won’t have creativity.

small on the left, Campbell on the right with Dixon on the bench with either Godden or berry behind leaburn gives us a bit more creativity than we have now

i think 2 from Coventry, Taylor and doc would work as a defensive 2.

i don’t like 4-2-3-1 but i think it’s the best option at the moment
  • I know this will sound outdated, but couldn't we just try a standard 4-4-2? Small on the left, Tyreece on the right when fit, Taylor and Coventry in the middle. Only way I can see us getting the width without going back to 3 centre backs or losing a striker.

Not enough energy and forward momentum in the 2 CMs in that lineup, and with most teams adopting a formation with 3 central midfielders these days, they'd get constantly overran in midfield

Think it can only work if it's a 4-5-1 out of possession with one of the strikers dropping back into midfield. But I'm not sure who has the legs to do that, other than Kanu and Ahadme.
  • Feels like it's been a long time since we had a formation that suited us!

3 assists in all comps so far, missed a few games injured too so he's not doing that bad at getting beyond the half way line, his biggest concern is the man behind him, he knows he's leaving our worst centre back exposed if he gets forward too often.

In fact a quick check shows he's our assist leader:

One of which will be his long throw and one a deep cross from near the halfway line. Obviously still need quality but it's not like he's getting to the byline and putting crosses in

Either way, he has the accuracy on his long balls in to not need to get so far forward, more so than any other wing back has been able to show this season so far. Even when they get to the byline, Small likes to do stepovers before crossing, Watson doesn't beat his man and Z.Mitchell isn't a wing back by any means.
  • Fair play, playing for England u20’s is a great achievement. I’m sure his agent will now be using that appearance to drum up a market for him in January.

Feels like Purrington vs Maatsen 2.0 to me
  • Why is he blowing on a German guys head
  • Love the guy and a great personality.
will have a great career but not with us.
