BBC SPotY

What a choice we have this year! And the athletics or track cycling haven't even started, with Kerr, Reekie, Gill, Hodgkinson, Finucane and others to shine. Hamilton (carrying a poor team), Pidcock, Kee, Cavendish,  Richard Spratley (google him), Gareth? Harry? Nathan Hales (I'm guessing he'll  get more than one gold),  Marcus Smith, Hughes, Littler.

We probably have to wait for Olympics to finish, but so many great performances.  What have I missed?

  • Unless I'm missing something isn't this in December?
  • Conor Coventry.

Got to be Cav, hasn't it?  To be the oldest TDF stage winner for sixty years is something special. For it to extend your count of wins to a record total that even Eddy Merckx now looks up to is beyond exceptional. And you've got t remember in that sport it's not just winning a race and going home, he had to complete a gruelling course every day to finish the tour.
He should get it but I doubt it. That moment when he won the last stage with Wiggins leading him out is one of the best moments in British cycling. Lifetime achievement probably.

Yeah he should get that over the SPOTY... Although I bet Andy Murray will challenge him, especially if he wins Gold

Two Legends of their respect Sport, both retiring quite close together
  • Could be the most wide open field in years. Would throw Lando into the mix if he can mount a proper challenge to Verstappen. Don't think there will be anyone from Cricket challenging this year.

  • It’ll be Bellingham

    Luke Littler 9/2 2nd Fav
  • 20 years ago, when our gold medals could be counted on one hand, meant immortality for an Olympic gold, but now golds in minority sports aren't enough to do well in SPOTY. Unless you have an incredible backstory or multiple wins.
  • Ben.Stokes after he scores a Test match 50 in 15 shots & then a 100 in 25.
  • It's an absolute dog shit award.

Cav, Jimmy and Andy can all share a lifetime achievement award  :)

    Half the sporting year?
  • Curbs 16/1.
  • The nominees for 2024 are:

    Jude Bellingham
    Keely Hodgkinson
    Luke Littler
    Joe Root
    Sarah Storey
    Alex Yee
  • Keely Hodgkinson is the massive favourite at 1.30 on Betfair followed by Luke Littler at 4.30. The other four are trading at over 100 so this is, effectively, a two horse race.

There are 69 other names that were introduced into the market at one time or other during the course of the last 12 months. Some of those names were, seemingly, put up without any evidence that they had achieved anything including Harry Maguire who has yet to play a full 90 minutes of football in the Premier League since last year's show.
  • Glad that Cavendish didnt get added to the list just because of the Tour de France, albeit he deserves a recognition award I hope

Should be fairly straightforward for Keely Hodgkinson. Littler and then Alex Yee or Sarah Storey 2nd and 3rd?

Team of the year? Team GB or McLaren for their first Constructors title since 1998?
  • Has to be Joe Root but they will give it to one of the two I’ve never heard of .

Team of the year will be Wigan for the clean sweep in winning all available titles this year in Rugby League
