MATCH PREVIEW: Charlton Athletic vs Leyton Orient | Saturday 17th August 2024 - 12:30pm Kick-Off

Charlton Athletic vs Leyton Orient
Saturday 17th August 2024 - 12:30pm Kick-Off
Referee: Edward Duckworth

Introduction
Charlton got league proceedings under way for the 2024/25 season last weekend, when they made the trip up to Lancashire, with Wigan Athletic laying in wait - What transpired in the North West, involved the home side dominating possession, only to fall fowl to a late goal from Lloyd Jones, ensuring that all three points were heading back down to South East London - Since then, we've had our annual sole match in the League Cup, this time losing narrowly to Birmingham City.

Its time now though to open the Valley gates for our first League encounter in SE7 this season; Leyton Orient are the visitors this weekend.

The Opposition
Name: Leyton Orient - Manager: Richie Wellens
Ground: Brisbane Road
Last League Result: Leyton Orient 1-2 Bolton Wanderers

Some would say that coping with a new Division having been promoted is easier the first time... You're riding the crest of the wave that is confidence. In Leyton Orient's case you've just won League Two, so of course you'll be heading into League One with confidence - That was certainly the case last season, with the "O's" like their promoted rivals: Stevenage and Northampton all having stelar campaigns. Although Leyton Orient were never serious contenders for the Play-Offs, they still managed a very respectful 65-pts in their first season at this level since 2017.

Now though, it could well be a case of second season syndrome... Often teams that are successful the first time round, struggle the next, and can find themselves battling to avoid relegation - Something that Richie Wellens will hopefully be looking to avoid this time around - In terms of the start to their 2024/25 they've done the opposite to the Addicks, losing their first game (a narrow 2-1 defeat at home to Bolton), whilst beating Newport County in the League Cup.

In terms of who we'll see lining up against us, and there will be reunions - Sean Clare moved back to the capital after spending twelve months with Wigan, whilst Diallang Jaiyesimi was reunited with his Manager from his Swindon days, having been released by Charlton in the summer - The absence of Idris El Mizouni who had spent the last two seasons on loan from Ipswich could be felt, there was to be no third season for the Tunisian Midfielder having signed for Oxford United over the summer.

Charlton Team News
There were naturally changes amongst the Charlton squad on Tuesday night, our yearly match in the League Cup does give the fringe players an opportunity to ask why they didnt get to start in the opening game of the season. Whilst we only lost narrowly to Birmingham, there wasnt really anyone who stood out in that regard; Thierry Small who had such a promising end to the year last time out was a disappointed, and you'd expect Josh Edwards (who excelled in Lancashire) to now make his Valley debut.

Elsewhere and Tyreece Campbell was unfortunate to have his penalty saved against Birmingham, however given Nathan Jones' comments after the Birmingham game, combined with the fact that Matt Godden still doesnt seem quite fit... Well I'd be surprised to see him dropped - The one battle for a starting berth may be in Midfield with Luke Berry vying for a place that Karoy Anderson currently occupies. I do believe we'll see an unchanged team from that opening match against Wigan though.

Mannion
A.Mitchell - Jones - Gillesphey
Ramsay - Coventry - Docherty - Edwards
Anderson
Campbell - Adahme

Substitutes Bench: Maynard-Brewer - Watson - Small - Berry - Z.Mitchell - Kanu - Aneke

  • The three points at Wigan provide a two point cushion going into the Leyton Orient home game, but there follows Bolton at home the following game.
By my expectation (which was exceeded at Wigan) Leyton Orient and Bolton should ideally yield six points. Lose to Orient and we’re one point behind target so a draw is the minimum needed, but win against Orient takes the pressure off what is likely to be the tougher game against Bolton when a draw is acceptable following another win.
Lose to Leyton Orient and Bolton and we’re suddenly four points behind schedule.
So with all that in mind I see the game against Leyton Orient at this stage as a must win in order to sustain the advantage gained at Wigan.
As far as I am concerned the performance can be as ugly as sin if we win.
  • Talking to my orient pal on Sunday and he said they outplayed Bolton but the O’s keeper was a disaster and gave Bolton their 2 goals (confirmed watching the highlights). I’m expecting a tough match and a 0-0 score.
  • I think shape-wise Docherty is playing ahead of Anderson in this new season. Anderson is scrapping much deeper than last season and Docherty is the one pushing on, which would also be indicated by Berry replacing Docherty against Birmingham. Does sort of imply that any centre mid we look at would be more in the shuttling, kicking, fouling mould than the mythical 10 everyone keeps talking about
Yeah I think we already have our 10s, Docherty is even wearing the shirt.

Tbh I’ve not seen much from Docherty so far, I’d have Berry in the 10 and then Docherty or Anderson deeper

To be honest it sounds quite a lot like how we set out to beat teams anyway. Bolton are a very solid side who don't give up too many chances and capitalise on mistakes. That's what we do and apart from one brilliant save from Baxter Orient didn't really create that many chances in behind Bolton's defence. Their goal came from a ball over the top and the Bolton defender falling over, so ideally we can try and avoid that. I think if we turn up like we did at Wigan they'll find it difficult again. Bolton had three big chances, scored two and fluffed one horribly that came about when an Orient defender tried to see the ball out but wilted under an aggressive press. Their second goal came from a set piece. Sounds very Charlton to be honest.
  • It’s the acid test. We have to show that we can dominate and score goals. Absolutely nothing but a win is good enough. Anything less and I think alarm bells will start to ring.
  • Was TC unfortunate to have this penalty saved? One of the worst pens i've ever seen
He was unfortunate in that nobody else stepped up to take it. He didn’t look like he wanted to take it and seemed to be looking around for somebody else to give the ball to and found himself with no option than to give it a go. Full credit to him for trying if that was the case and that experience will make him a better player going forward.

  • Will be tuning in from Iceland while on hols. Another tight early season game, 2-1 this time.

Completely agree. If we lose this game, call me negative, but my expectations for this season will completely tank. To get out of this division (upwards!) a fixture like this should be a guaranteed 3 points in the bag.

Alarm bells and tanking expectations, after two games, one of which we won.

    Madness.

    Thankfully it’s a 3-0 home win tomorrow.

Im pretty sure we have more games after this one to make up the slack!
  • Leyton Orient have a dodgy keeper - also at fault for goal in cup game - plus Sean Clare at right back. If we can't score a couple against them we are in big trouble. I predict a fairly comfortable 2-0 home win - no idea who will score our goals though. If Pratley gets any game time he must be odds-on to get a yellow card!

My only prediction is that Sean Clare will carry the ball up to the half way line 14 times before cutting back and passing to his centre-back.
This feels like a longer way of saying “he’d walk back into our team” 😂

    1-0 either way .  Maybe 0-0.

  • Really looking forward to this.  Might be just me but this season break seems to have dragged on for ever!

I'm also concerned about our striking options at the moment. Think you could play TC or Kanu for the whole 46 game season and they'd do well to score 9. They're just not there yet. Hopefully with Godden and Leaburn coming back, we'll have better options.

Still, buzzing for this game and for the season to get going.
  • A bit of a must win imo, the games that follow after this are Bolton (h), Reading (a) and Rotherham (h) where I am expecting 4 points at best. With the fixtures not getting any easier, I think it's important to win your first league home game to give yourself some breathing space. There will be raised eyebrows over anyone who says it's a 'must win', but we started slow last season, and it didn't pan out too well.

That said I can't see anything other than a 1-1 draw and that's where my money would go. Hope I'm very wrong and we absolutely smash them. Looking forward to the game
  • Lovely 7.30 a.m. KO for me.....at least the missus won't be moaning about me watching the game when there is shit to do......

    And what about on Saturday?

I’m seriously considering having a bet that we don’t score four in a game all season.

Orient came into this season feeling bullish and a 2-1 defeat to Bolton won’t have quelled that feeling in their fanbase - especially when they see they’ve got last season’s 16th placed team up next.

We’ve played three decent teams back to back (if you include Pompey) and only given up a single wonder goal. Another clean sheet would be excellent but you can never bank on them because as Tuesday showed, sometimes there isn’t much you can do about it.

I’ll put my optimistic pants on and go with a 1-0 or 2-1 home win. Ask me tomorrow and I might say 1-1 draw.
