Having been there with a load of coins from the egg box a few times when it’s broken I decide to bag the cash up and take it in. No - they don’t take cash. WTAF? I need to use the machine. So where can I take £700 of loose change?0

cafcfan said:Right here we go. The Nat West web site says you CAN use the cash deposit machines. It doesn't say you MUST use them. It also says you can deposit cash in branch. Either the branch is not doing their job properly or the organisation is not communicating with customers in a clear, fair and not misleading way.
It's not good enough. so ring 03457888444 and ask to speak with Marcus Wogart - he is Head of Compliance. You won't get him but you will get one of his PA minions. Be clear that you wish to make a formal complaint and check that the conversation is being recorded by them. Explain that your branch has failed to provide the service advertised, the machines never work and you have been inconvenienced.
This will do two things, first it will massively piss off Wogart or his PA and as a consequence the branch will get a bollocking. Second you will get an apology; the service you deserve next time you visit; and you should receive a monetary "goodwill gesture".
Alternatively, but it won't work as well, deal with these guys.Customer Relations Manager NatwestCustomer Relations

Is it because of the quantity or will they simply not take any change? ( I thought they had to)0

Was it today you had this problem or another day? I ask because the website notes the branch does not have a counter service on a Saturday but does otherwise:

My local Lloyds will only take it correctly pre-bagged and a limit of 16 (I think) bags at one time.2

I think the push back against a cashless society is to buy your newspaper, sweets and all small transactions with a single card swipe . Face value for us. I'm not sure if there is a transaction charge as well as a % fee, but I'm sure if enough of us do it, the banks and businesses will rethink or be over-whelmed.2

The bloke in the hardwear shop a couple of weeks ago said it was cash only for a small purchase, it was for some small hooks I wanted for the curtain rail.1

I don't think I've had more than £10 worth in my life.
1) I never left the house with change; and
2) Any change I came home with went into a big pot
I ultimately took it to a Coinstar machine at a local Sainsbury where (after commission) I collected about £1,500 in folding.Started doing it again but Covid scuppered it.I never use cash for anything now.2 -

I had to get plastic ones with a sticky back!1 -
I didn’t use a sticky back to purchase them.3 -

I went into HSBC the other day to pay some notes in. Got there and one of the paying in machines was broken. I was three back in the queue for the other one and thought "fuck it, I'll just fill out a slip and pay it in at the desk instead". Looked round the corner and there was no desk?! There was however a sign saying how you could use the area as a safe space if you were a victim of domestic abuse! I was a little confused, but managed to pay in at the machine after a wait. Would have been pissed off if I'd lugged 700 quids worth of change down there only to find that out though!1

I work for a charity and we have a wonderful team of volunteers who visit establishments that have our collection boxes. They empty them and have been paying the funds into the charity's bank account via branches where they live. They are finding it much harder to find a bank that will accept cash these days.1

The problem is Banks don't have staff now. Traditional bank services (cash in/out, cheques, Giro credits) cost money to process and staff are expensive (plus other costs such as cash management, security and processing). Banks used to tolerate this by using the staff to sell other services (Insurance/Credit Cards/ Mortgages/ Loans/Investments) but now this is so restricted there is no offset. Retail Banking doesn't make money its the "Casino" side of the banks that earn the money0

Whilst not wishing to weigh into the rights or wrongs, why not just use the change for purchases / petty cash as and when it comes in?2

Can you use it up by paying cash at the supermarket self service machines?
They usually have a coin funnel where you can chuck handfuls of change. It sorts it out much like the change machines - minus the 10% fee.

Take the cash to another bank and open an account with the cash, then tell Nat West to do one...5
