Conceding Goals From Distance

A couple more goals conceded earlier in the week, from shots outside the box.
Surely our ‘statistical analysis’ would pick up on this, and put it in plain language to our coaching team.
Is it a weakness of the goalie (doesn’t like shots from distance) or the midfield not doing their job properly and closing people down?
I thought this would be a simple thing to correct, and work on, but obviously not.
Cmon lads we need the points, you’ve got to put in a shift and get the job done (Apologies for turning into Mike Bassett).

Not sure it’s on Mannion, purely from memory the actual strikes have been pretty good and hard to save. Sinclair’s was right in the corner, Savage’s hit the post and went in etc. There’s something structurally wrong, I think our defence sits too deep and then the midfield naturally sit really deep too which leaves enough of a gap to take a touch and get an accurate shot away5

It's the free man not being marked that has time to take a touch, set themself then shoot every time.6

Has Mannion actually saved a shot on target from outside the box?0

From memory theyve all flown into the corner.11 -

I think it is hard to blame Mannion. You can ask should we close them down better but ultimately it is a bit crazy, against us, the percentages for league one players being able to do this. Look at our shots to get a better idea what should be happening.0

The closing down has been terrible, and given players the chance to pick a spot, Mannion can't have done much about any of them2

But if we have a penalty, I'd tip us to miss it. Even average teams at this level have players who can shoot accurately from distance, we don't even have players who can shoot accurately from close range!1

They are not "from distance" ffs ! Tuesday nights goals were from the edge of the box. Standard goals imo. "Distance" goals are from 25 yards plus.
Just because we don't shoot from that range doesn't mean there is anything special about them. Standard fare imo.
We did actually have a shot "from distance" as you would say. Free kick just before half time. Would have said their players & keeper were at fault if that had gone in ? Nah....doubt it.
It's just that we have been accustomed to seeing our players not scoring from the edge of the box.3 -

I don’t think Mannion is at fault for any of those long distance goals .0

Uh oh. Is Mannion already going down the Ben Amos route with some supporters?
Think once Amos left we realised how good he actually was and that a lot of those long range efforts that went past him were pretty much unsavable.

lack of closing down near out areas and a keeper either too slow to see the shot or too slow to move his feet in the right direction in an attempt to save a long distance shot5

Give it a day and there'll be another one to worry about.0

ultimately though the midfield giving the players all the time in the world to pick there spot is the root cause of these goals.4 -

nothing wrong with the keeper, the closing down is abysmal
I think the Rotherham one was the worst from memory, the fella had 20 yards to run into and pick his spot unchallenged
the defence aren't blameless, but the closing down 30+ yards out has to start with the frontmen/midfield4 -

And stop being caught so badly wrong side of his man that he ends up running directly behind him.0 -

Still undecided re Mannion but in my heyday I’d have looked a shorter version of him making a dive and being nowhere near the ball as well
footwork and positioning is a massive part of it , I’m not convinced one way or t’other just yet
imagine one day when we have players who can grow a pair and can actually shoot with some power and accuracy regularly , I suppose we need a wooden defence and midfield closing us down to achieve that1 -
The midfield not willing to take one and put their bodies in the way of the shot.1
