Conceding Goals From Distance

I think part of the way we defend invites shots from range.Previously we were all over the place and teams would just get behind the sides and score from simple cut backs. Now we defend our box well, and limit the opposition to mostly shots from range. This is good defending and I think we’ve just been a little unlucky that a few have flown into the top corner and could also do a little better closing down quicker.I don’t think it’s a major issue, I’d rather be conceding from 25 yards than the type of goals we were regularly conceding last season that are a lot easier for the opposition to score3

Maybe Mannion isn't used to facing shots from distance in training, seeing as we never seen to take them in matches6

Is it though? We're not talking absolute worldies here, or Jackson/Gerrard style blasting a loose ball into the top corner as they arrive from deep. We're talking about shots that players have plenty of time to think about, set up and aim. We've not been unlucky at all, Berry and probably Doherty could quite easily score similar goals but haven't because other teams don't roll over to have their tummies tickled.NabySarr said:I think part of the way we defend invites shots from range.Previously we were all over the place and teams would just get behind the sides and score from simple cut backs. It's not a better quality of defending. It's a different version of bad, that's all.3 -
I noticed a football in my back garden this afternoon (in Rainham). With a good run-up, I gave it a tremendous thump over the fence, into the far distance.
Charlton are now 1-0 down and I've been credited the goal

Realistically, unless you are a dominant team that will have all the ball, you can’t stop the opposition having attempts on goal. If you make sure they have them from far away, then you’ve got a better chance of not concedingthenewbie said:

We could definitely have done things better and prevented some goals, but in general our defending has been way better this season because we defend the box well and other than the first 45 against Blackpool, we don’t get played through easily0 -
Some interesting stats on this
We have conceded the highest % of our goals from outside the box in the league this season. 45%, with the next highest being 30% (in fact ours is the highest in the EFL). To me that looks like an anomaly that will even itself out over the season, we’ve just been unlucky
Our average xG conceded per shot is 0.07, the lowest in the league. We are limiting opposition to low quality chances from range, that is good defending4 -
So how come we keep losing games ?NabySarr said:Some interesting stats on

Because the opposition keep smashing "low quality chances" into the top corner of our goal!golfaddick said:

We could do with a player like that George Dobson bloke that Wrexham are so chuffed about.

Agreed. Mannion's command of his area has been good, I'm still undecided on his shot stopping. I think for some of these "worldies" he could move his feet better and got closer to them. Not sure how many were saveable even he did that, though, so I think it would be harsh to put the blame on him.oohaahmortimer said:Still undecided re Mannion but in my heyday I’d have looked a shorter version of him making a dive and being nowhere near the ball as well
footwork and positioning is a massive part of it , I’m not convinced one way or t’other just yet
imagine one day when we have players who can grow a pair and can actually shoot with some power and accuracy regularly , I suppose we need a wooden defence and midfield closing us down to achieve that1 -
It's a good question for the stattos ( @Callumcafc ) - do we actually concede more goals from outside the area than most other teams, or does it feel like we do because we don't score very many ourselves? And to be fair, of the few goals we have scored this season two have been from outside the box.golfaddick said:They are not "from distance" ffs ! Tuesday nights goals were from the edge of the box. Standard goals imo. "Distance" goals are from 25 yards plus.
Just because we don't shoot from that range doesn't mean there is anything special about them. Standard fare imo.
We did actually have a shot "from distance" as you would say. Free kick just before half time. Would have said their players & keeper were at fault if that had gone in ? Nah....doubt it.
It's just that we have been accustomed to seeing our players not scoring from the edge of the box.0
