Switched off the stream for half an hour second half. That's how tired I am of watching dross. I have a memory of Luton fans pre season saying that under Jones, football won't be pretty but the results will be good. Well Nathan now has a squad of players he wanted. He also helped off load our leading striker last season. We have some injuries, and the players available would probably not get promotion from league 2. Swapping May for Godden/Ahadme is the sort of daydream some of us have about taking control of Palace for a week. The lack of quality and composure is astounding. The high press has gone, as has the defence. The midfield can't distribute, doesn't seem to help defend, and would always prefer a lazy pass. We also need too many touches to decide what to do with the ball. Gives the opposition time to organise. Overall, miserable football from a mediocre club.
I’m very negative as a rule and feel very negative after that and have made a negative post.
To balance that out I’m gonna say one positive thing - I will probably curse it, but I think Mannion has been excellent all season. Made several great saves today, commands his box well and claims crosses well. Best goalie we’ve had in a while.
At fault for the goal though and watch his reaction after, lays prone with his head to the floor, he knows he made an error, he will learn.
The ball was well within his grasp, don’t understand why he’s pushing it away.
I have lost count of the amount of times he has come out and said we are not good enough or the performance was not good enough.
Ultimately it is his responsibility to make sure what happens in training happens on matchday, 1/2 good games does not make up for the amount of times we have been poor this season.
You can see this turning into another mid table season.
After a good night's sleep, I wake up feeling good, full of energy for the day ahead.
Then I remember last night.
Not much point in me repeating the same things as everyone else, but I do have to wonder, was the main difference that Jones couldn't be on the touchline dishing out the bollockings when people were being crap? Or have we shown this mediocrity (being generous) once too often for that to be the case?
One thing is for sure, 20,000+ people better see a massive improvement on Saturday if they don't want to leave the pitch under a hail of pies.
On reflection, and in the cold light of day, Mannion has to go on the bench Saturday. Despite a couple of good saves he was at fault for the first goal and too many flaps at crosses.
Over two games we should have had three points. We have two points - a net loss of one. Other sides "get lucky" and get three points from a game they deserve sod all from, we don't, so when we are the best side, we have to win, draws are not enough when you are incapable of putting two decent back to back performances together.
It's quite simple. We talk about standards but not enough of these players are competent enough to hit those standards consistently resulting in mixed results which in turn results in a middling season.
Out of that starting 11 only Alex Mitchell and Matty Godden can be reasonably pleased with themselves
Mitchell had a shocker today
Perspectives I guess. Yes he had some wayward passes but was 100% our best defender
Apart form the opening 15 where we kept the ball well, we offered nothing of any worth. Flattered to deceive.
Once Barnsley were allowed to grow into the game they did what we never do and made their possession count, an effort that was hardly a rocket is palmed into the feet of Dunn and its 1-0. From that point on there was only one team in it, a bit of a reversal of the Stockport game where we were Stockport. We somehow manage to claw a goal back and then lead thanks to the super sub Berry but typical classic Charlton strike and Gillesphey decides to tickle his man rather than tackle him and oh look, 2-2.
We didnt deserve to equalise and def didnt to lead for, what, minute and a half? but still, come on, when you take the lead in 90+3 youve got to be taking the 3 points. Pathetic.
The same old problems exist, we lack any real quality in the final third, Godden an instinct striker but doesnt get enough chances, Leaburn, a talent for sure but tries to go it alone and overplay more often than not, BUT when you're feeding off 2 from ACampbell, Anderson and Docherty you havent got much hope of finding the net regularly anyway.
We (Jones) shoot ourselves in the foot with the continued insistence on playing 2 from ACampbell, Anderson and Docherty, every game we're chasing and relying on Berry, TC, Chucks or Leaburn to come off the bench and nick it one nil. Is it a trust issue? Fitness? or stubbornness? I dont know, but just wish Jones would have the confidence to start one of Berry/ TC in the AM slot and maybe, just maybe, NOT have to chase a result in the last 30 mins. The former 3 all offer the same headless chicken running around and it just stifles any real chance we have of playing.
Cov -Taylor - Docherty - Berry has some nice balance to it, but no, we need the Charlton Labradors to charge around for 90 odd mins.
Positives - The so called double pivot was fine, Leaburn makes a big difference.
Special mention to - Berry, for fast becoming our get out of jail free card
Extra special mention to - Gillesphey, who continues to look utter wank in a 2 man pairing (and usually in the 3 as well), not one for jumping on a player but just offers nothing, cant battle, cant tackle, long balls often over hit, short passes usually undercooked and ZERO awareness of whats going on around him.
I think we have to be realistic about where we are.We would have gone down last year but for the appointment of Jones and we now have a better squad. The style of football is poor and I think it will remain so .I think we will flirt with a play off position this year but that's progress.I think we need to keep the faith expect next season to be our year .
Not forgetting Barnsley are a top team in this division and they weren't any better than us
Read some of these and wondered what game people watched. Started ok and Barnsley forced into errors. Crowd silent but strangely tolerant of the shite Barnsley were offering. However Gillesphy under hitting every pass and putting us in danger when it was not necessary.
Mannion mistake for goal no doubt. Second half same as the first- it was us in control then we stopped. They looked better for a bit and crowd woke up. Their lack of quality shown by our goals and we’re going to get three points via their comical defence. Except we then decide to panic too. Points shared - we’re clearly on a par with Barnsley- some decent stuff going forward and both teams hobbled by keepers with mistakes in them. Not the end of the world. Couple of dozen under 500- weren’t the worst night. Better company than the 8000+ tourists on Saturday no doubt.
I still believe there is enough in this squad to hit playoffs.
We've proved it v Birmingham and Bolton. From what I read we sounded the inverse on Saturday eg unlucky not to win v Stockport.
Whether we will or not will depend on clicking and getting a good run of results.
Poor performance last night against a poor barnsley but would have taken a point before and for most of the game up until 93rd minute.
Berry needs to play regularly ahead of Anderson.
Would have liked to have seen Dixon get a 10 minute cameo at the end.
Leaburn is a presence and will keep improving once he sheds the rust.
Godden is good at this level and will get goals.
In defence of A Campbell he did make some good forward runs off the ball and would have had a brace had Godden side ruled it across to him where he had open goals on 2 occasions.
A win on Saturday vs a buoyant Wrexham in front of a big crowd would lift spirits again and mean we'd beaten the top 2 sides. Easier said than done but we're an enigma of a football club in that respect.
Lots of football to be played yet and a new squad which will take time to click.
Not sure what the announcement in the second half calling out home fans for racist (?) chanting was about.
If there were racist chants, then it's another club I'd like to see circling the plug hole.
You can't blame a whole club/ fanbase for a few idiots. Happens at every club including ours. The fact it was called out by the club themselves rather than ignored is how it came to attention.
we nearly nicked it thanks to dead eye Berry, once more though we snatched a draw from the jaws of a win .. Barnsley looked the better side for most of the game .. we had our moments and I was pleased with the determination shown by our players, EXCEPT for the chaos in the last few seconds .. an away point from a club higher than us in the table is not to be sniffed at
Its ok doing it at home vs Bolton & Birmingham, but can we do it away at Bristol Rovers/Barnsley on a Tuesday night.... NOPE - havent even got the mentality to pounce on a win if we're playing shit and hold out for " MINUTES !!! FFS. Wont go up wont go down... another season to come in the worlds shittest league. Roll on Saturday when we beat Wrexham and then draw or lose at Exeter...
My concern in that whatever starting 11 we put out, apart from a couple of games, we don't look at all like we are going to like we are going to have a game wrapped up by the 70th minute. We are having to bring subs on to win or draw games rather than see games out. Of course, subs are there to impact but at the moment they are being used to rescue us and that isn't a good place to be in.
I’d have bitten your hand off for a point at the 70 minute mark. The most Charlton thing ever to get an undeserved lead and concede 1 minute later.
A few thoughts:
We looked knackered after 30 mins. We lacked leadership. We once again couldn’t deal with their defenders stepping in to midfield and creating an overload. It’s been a consistent theme since the opening game against Wigan.
A word on Barnsley. No wonder they liked Isted if that’s was their number one goalie last night. This site would crash if our gk performed as badly as him.
At least hopefully now Berry has earned a starting spot. I thought Anderson and A.Campbell were woeful last night. Anderson just isn't ready for the league but tries. Campbell was waltzing around barely trying at points, some of his closing down of players was beyond pathetic. He also offers very little going forward.
It's quite simple. We talk about standards but not enough of these players are competent enough to hit those standards consistently resulting in mixed results which in turn results in a middling season.

Mitchell had a shocker today
Perspectives I guess. Yes he had some wayward passes but was 100% our best defender
I recall the wayward passes and it is easier for centre halfs to have good passing stats when nothing passes count. Not digging him out as he was the best of a bad bunch barring the three stand outs for me.
Anderson had a stinker but he does put in the effort. He had decent games against Birminigham and Stockport for me.

Yet one that teams lower down in the football pyramid aspire to be in and where we still deserve to be.
At the beginning I'd have taken a point From the performance I'd have torn your arm off for a point We didn;t really deserve anything from the game and I'd have felt bad if we had won so in that respect I'm happy with a 2-2
However The defence looks drastically weaker without Jones dominating aerially Ramsay is a big loss because he gets up and down the wing whereas REG is more of a "meat and potatoes" kind of defender and full back Gillesphey is, sadly, past-it. He doesn't win headers despite being tall and he has the turning arc of an aircraft carrier and so is targeted. His passing isn't working either any more. Maybe it's time for Zach Mitchell to get some action A. Mitchell is decent and strong but also not the quickest and his passing really lets him down
In midfield Alan Campbell doesn't appear to offer much, if anything. Karoy is off colour at the moment but is learning every game - bit of a balancing act with him
Injuries are hurting us at the moment because of the profile of those that are injured.
My thoughts about the match have been covered in all the previous posts, but I just wanted to say kudos to Barnsley for not trying to waste time from their goal onwards like we’ve seen in previous matches.

they were just more subtle about it (you kind of have to be at home). They took an age over GKs, throw ins etc

If you think Mannion flaps at crosses wait until you see AMB at corners 😂
So frustrating we can't string a run of decent performances together but the positives are we nicked a point at Barnsley which I will take. Back to the drawing board re personnel for the Wrexham game. Coventry was abysmal but he has credit in the bank at the moment
I'll say it. Small to me is a better bet than Edwards. He made a big difference when he came on. In fact the three players who made a difference, Small, Campbell and Berry we couldn't give player marks to. The rest have to take a look at themselves. They have shown at home that they can pass the ball, they can tackle, they can out work teams so why are they so tepid away?
The players that come on after 70 minutes or so always seem to do much better than when they actually start a game. True of Chuks, Godden, TC, Berry, Miles, Small anyway. They are the same players so it must be that they generally come on with a clear remit to change the tempo of our attacking play and actually try to win the game. It's about time NJ had the guts to send a team out to dominate, attack and score early and not play it safe until the usual cavalry charge in the latter stages of games.

How was he 'abysmal'? He was the only midfielder doing any serious tackling. What you mean to say is that a few of his through-balls went wrong. That is what happens to through-balls, they're low percentage. When he did find a player with one, Godden blazed a good chance uselessly over. The only seriously bad moment was the one straight out of play, but idk how you extrapolate 'abysmal' from that. Or single him out when almost everyone else was significantly worse
I have lost count of the amount of times he has come out and said we are not good enough or the performance was not good enough.

That equalizer was coming all day long
I disagree, he trains the squad and can give prompts and orders from the touchline, but on match day it is up to the players to perform.
