Geoff Capes RIP

Geoff Capes, who competed for Great Britain in the shot put at three Olympic Games, won two Commonwealth titles and twice won the World’s Strongest Man competition, has died aged 75, his family have announced.

    He once picked my sister up, she was about six at the time and he lifted up nearly all her primary school class at once.

  • Met him when I was a kid, he was at some county fair thing and they got him to do a show pulling a tractor along, then he did autographs etc.

    Seemed a nice bloke.

    I could not name another Shot Putter before or since. Somehow for a brief period during my childhood, Capes' made it interesting enough for him to become a household name. RIP Geoff.

    Was coached by Stuart Storey (who taught me golf - but he was a better shot put coach!) and I saw Geoff and spoke to him many times when I was at Thames Poly - he would walk down a basement corridor and it was like an eclipse of the sun, blocking out all the light.

    Huge man in every respect.
