Was coached by Stuart Storey (who taught me golf - but he was a better shot put coach!) and I saw Geoff and spoke to him many times when I was at Thames Poly - he would walk down a basement corridor and it was like an eclipse of the sun, blocking out all the light.

    Huge man in every respect.

    RIP Superstar
Bob, I was at Thames Poly in the early mid seventies and Stuart Storey coached us at rugby and I often found myself in the weights room at the same time as Stuart, Geoff Capes and Judy Oakes (another shot putter Geoff coached whom was England's number one female shot putter for a while). Geoff shifted weights that ordinary mortals could only wonder at. When he walked past you in the corridor it was like the light going out. He was about 6ft 6inches and seemed almost as wide too. I'm not a little bloke being 6ft 1inch and 13-14 stone at the time and I've never felt so dwarfed as in the corridor next to Geoff which Bob has also alluded to.

Geoff seemed a quiet bloke but friendly and it was a pleasure to have met him.

RIP Geoff and condolences to your family and friends.
  • Ex copper if I’m not mistaken.
    RIP…..Constable Capes.
  • Lovely man ,legend of the athletics world, one thing I remember though was many years ago in some sort of mixed sports programme,I think it was basketball ,Mick Channon kept pushing and shoving him and really wound him up,I thought Geoff was going to kill him,but they had a good laugh about it later.

  • Possibly because of the beard, I thought he was much older than he actually was and I was therefore a little surprised at his death cos I thought he was already dead! RIP.

Bet the footballers were glad when they found out that one of the events was a tug of war!
