Can you arrange for the EES biometrics online before you go to airport for trip, if so, how? I can envisage thousands missing their plane due to delays completing the bureaucratic box ticking.
I would imagine if you don’t have the process sorted before, the. It’s pointless going to the airport
The EES part is having your picture taken and additionally finger prints.
Photo routinely taken at Many airports already.
Don’t see how you can do your fingerprints online beforehand if it’s to be secure?
I think it’s just been reported that first time you travel within Europe when introduced there will be an additional 5 mins to get the fingerprints first recorded - at least that’s what I’ve understood.
How many people are on an average plane?
Quite a few. What’s your point?
can’t say i routinely sail through many airport passport controls currently (or before Brexit) and can often recall few staff and seemingly surly staff perusing passports slowly.
Its up to the EU as to how they will implement not the UK.
If the EU want it then it will need to be followed.
My point being that it will take an awfully long time to process UK (and other 3rd country) passengers. At least initially.
My last experience, a couple of months, ago was passing through Heraklion, Crete airport. I think they had 4 non-EU passport holder desks open at border control.
Assuming, say 180 passengers on my flight and your 5 minutes processing time, that's a total of 900 minutes in total, or 3.75 hours for each of us in the queue.
That's with just one flight landing. No idea what volume of flights pass through in July/August but I certainly won't be booking any flights until the implementation date is a lot clearer or until after it's bedded in.
Your "5 min" processing time sounds inconsequential in theory, but multiply that up by the number of passengers on a cruise for example, and that's a whole world of pain for what should be an enjoyable experience.
As I said not my 5 mins but what I believe was reported.
Further as I said it’s down to implementation plans and undoubtedly it will be a pain. They can throw more resource it at to help for example.
I don’t think anyone suggests it won’t be straightforward
On a lighter note probably quicker than it takes me to try and then fail at the automated eGates on returning to the UK.
No idea what I do wrong.
😡😆
Plenty don't know how to scan their match tickets correctly at the Valley. The automated eGates must completely dumfound them.
I have a mate whose hairline is fading very quickly. Meaning that he doesn't look too similar too his passport when it comes to hairline etc.
So naturally, when he gets sent to a border control official by the e-gates he is absolutely fuming, always makes me laugh remembering him swearing at the gates and heading to the border security queue
If it really is like an ESTA then it will still mean queuing to see a border inspector.
I've done my share of EU travelling the past few years and haven't had any particularly long waits to be get into countries. Norway took longest, who operate under EU rules and even use the same passport stamp. That was probably an anomaly.
EU passport stamps will disappear after this. USA, AU and NZ have already got rid of them, which is particularly annoying after 24+ hours travelling.
I don’t know what anybody is fussed about. Despite the victory of the vote that the whole of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland should leave the European Union, it is possible for anybody to simply walk from the UK into the EU with no checks whatsoever. Goodness knows what this ‘Brexit’ is that people keep mentioning, it certainly isn’t a manifestation of the intention of the vote that won in 2016.

Like most things in life Seth, we all tend to get on with things and not take too much interest in how it all works, as long as it works, so the shock of putting tariffs on our biggest trading partner, 60% of our exports, did not occur to people, 31 billion divorce bill to Europe being the same ' I didn't know that' status. People didn't vote for that, lots of different reasons being put forward as to why they did vote for Brexit but I don't know anyone who looked that deeply into it, I voted remain because I was satisfied with my life not because of fear of the two reasons I mention above. Funnily enough another country has just taken a vote without the full knowledge of what could happen, welcome back Donald Trump.

In terms of what people voted for they only had to know four things.
What the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is. What the European Union is. What the word ‘remain’ means. What the word ‘leave’ means.
Despite leave winning the vote, leave has not happened as voted for.
Worth noting, if you have booked your trip through a travel agent, it's intended that they will be able to apply for the ETIAS on your behalf (just proof of your acceptance is needed) through the official website.

Seth, at the risk of boring every other poster on here, by what measure do you arrive at the conclusion that we haven't left ?
Removing freedom of movement has been very costly for the UK, over £35 million spent to 31 March 2024, to make the M20 ready for Operation Brock and every time it is implemented it costs £250,000.
Government has given £10.5 million to Port of Dover, Eurotunnel & Eurostar St. Pancras. Eurostar trains no longer serve Ashford International because of border checks. Eurotunnel has spent £70m to provide the booths that people will use for the biometric checks.

I wrote that we haven’t left as voted for on the ballot paper. The reason being that ‘we’ includes Northern Ireland which has been treated differently. What have I written that isn’t true?

Seth, I should point out that from my own experience, most people outside of Northern Ireland didn't take into consideration the 'Northern Ireland protocol', it certainly wasn't on the ballot paper and probably backs up my point that people generally vote from a personal standpoint without deep consideration as to the ramifications of their standpoint and eventual voting intention. If this thread had not have been initiated by another poster, with attendant perspectives I would not have posted my perspective, which is actually true. Want to ban freedom of speech? Carry a photocopy rather than your passport. I've never been asked in Italy, that and a driving licence would be enough.
The EES is supposed to be coming in before ETIAS. (The fingerprinting and facial recognition bit). All the shiny new machines were lined up still in their protective packaging at Lanzarote ACE airport last week. No where near ready. It was supposed to be 10 November but apparently France, Holland and Germany couldn't get their act together. No new date has been announced. As for ETIAS, it was supposed to be launched in 2020,then 2022, 2023 and 2024. So I wouldn't hold my breath.
If the application process is anywhere near the same as the US ESTA, it will be very straightforward. (They don't even ask you if you are a member of the Nazi party anymore).

Why personalise and say snide stuff about straws nurses and medication? If what I have written is wrong then say why. Your opinion is that people didn’t consider the ramification of their vote. I am not interested in why people voted the way they did, but the result of the vote in reality.
