  • Superb meeting and thanks to all for organising and the speakers for making time to come along.

Random points that came up to reflect on
    - Steve B. commented that our spend was about £11m ie top  6 spend.....(I was guessing at £8m and was surprised by this high figure)
    - we are carrying a lot of dead weight (my choice of words)  from previous owners/recruitment with players wages still being paid to those who have moved on to other clubs. Name was mentioned.
-size of spend and performance in league table will be scrutinised, hence NJ will be under pressure
_ Steve B was clear that "booing" does not help in anyway and undermines team. Some players cannot handle it. (IMO why should they have to?)
-DeanK felt that sort of reaction may result in the dressing room closing the doors to the outside whether its ownership, or fans and using it as a motivation. He felt unaffected by negative reactions.

SB related how after a poor game and 0-4 defeat a W.Ham he had been shocked by the abuse he had got when he went to our " fans".

Discussion of star players leaving under a cloud- mainly Scott Parker and Lyle Taylor (abit). Rumour was  Scott Parker  left as he had a "gentleman's agreement" with club that if a top 4 side came in for him he could go. Then we were 4th and Chelsea were outside the top 4 so the club argued that they weren't a top 4 club despite the fact he was offered massively more money. So a dispute that was resolved by SP going to training and refusing to kick a ball.
In both cases SP/LT Steve B. sided with the player citing risk of injury if they played/delayed their move and life changing sums of money and career advancement. He did mention LT was contracted to play ( this is actually not a differential as SP was under contract as well). Chairman strongly disagreed with  SP methods .

Audience  pointed out that players are treated  like commodities by a club also another audience member that once they had left it was done and dusted.
there  was comment that it was sad that SP mayn't be welcome back at the club ( IMO ridiculous after this many years)

  • Steve spoke very well about the ex-players association and wanting to create a "hardship" fund for players or families having a hard time.

Dean isn't a fan of Harry Rednapp.

Some absolute horrendous stories given, by Brownie re families just after a bit of respite from dementia, from ex players that have it, really hope this initiative gets traction, and takes off.
I was involved in an assessment of a former professional footballer who had dementia, it was believed to be attributed to the heading of the ball over many decades. A charity had been set up in Doncaster to assist with ex-players and as suggested, there is very limited resources for these former legends (or otherwise) thta gave us joy through their careers. To witness a physically fit healthy manwoyh no comprehension of the world he inhabited, was very saddening, especially seeing the challenges facing his lovely family.

I'd like to apologise for the word ridiculous in the above. It was a lazy shorthand tfor the emotional attachment fans have for a club and players  compared to career aspirations and business attitude of players and clubs. Kinda fighting against the wind and tide to expect loyalty from a player.
  • Most players, normally not from our youth system, would say, "sod the fans as long as I get my money every month or they pay up my contract, why should I care"
  • If the players were shocked by the booing at HT and FT on Tuesday, I'd be amazed. Indeed I'm sure a few of the players must hate the ineffective hoofball we play as well.

We cant boo if they play badly but they can come over to the fans and do a cringeworthy celebration when we beat Orient first game of the season

Fuck that. If I can't boo I wont clap either. Can't have it both ways.

So we mustn’t boo after witnessing crap hoofball week after week because it “undermines” the team & some players can’t handle it? FFS at least they take home a nice wage, whereas our loyal fans spend lots of money travelling round the country following the team 🤦🏻‍♀️ We can’t handle having had a decade of mostly dross, utter rubbish & the odd crisis, but we carry on regardless.
Not what either player said and the post your responding to wasn't a fair reflection of what the players said either.

They were asked if booing effected players and they said it did but that players had ways of coping with it. Some would shake it off, others would crumble and maybe move down the leagues while some dressing rooms would create a siege mentality.

They also said the fans paid their money and were entitled to their opinion/boo if they chose to.

I'm glad I'm not the only one.

But then again we were actually at the meeting!

99% of players could not give a f*** as long as their wages are paid on time.  It is just a job for them.
  • When Deano goes out on the pitch pre-game at Selhurst he asks the grounds staff why there isn't a blue plaque on the post saving "Dean Kiely saved Andy Johnson's penalty here". He then reminds them that Dennis scored at the other end.

As someone at the meeting reminded us all, that was exactly 20 years ago yesterday.
You should get some blue plaque style stickers made up for him. :)

Clearly we're wasting our time organising these meetings, inviting along respected old players and asking them questions when all we need to do is to get the answers is read CL.
    Very good evening.
Going on this thread today, my suggestion would be announce the meeting on Charlton life and leave the actual meeting in the room.
Just one of the downsides of the Internet/ social media.
Some of those at the meeting are trying to relay the meeting and those not there can take it the wrong way.
  • Not watching but it appears Browny was saying on CharltonTV how well the night went.

@killerjerrylee and I got called "sensible"!!!!

My comment was a generalization, and not aimed at what is done with Bromley.
Reading back through posts you will see I am very supportive of what is done.
