I really hope we don't look back at the end of the season and regret not getting the right deals done in the next few days
  • Just catching up on the last 5 pages.
In a nutshell,  Moxon isn’t coming and Small isn’t going.

    As you were.

With Potts and Hytlon gone (sort of) gone our squad is down to a more manageable 22ish plus Josh Laq, Enslin, Dixon and Reid. Would imagine there’s space for some signings now

My guess is that the Hylton and Potts decisions where made some days or weeks ago.

Annoucing them now suggests some incoming signings are about to be announced.

The phrasing "we’ll assess the situation again after the transfer window has closed" might be manager talk for "we have someone else we want but if that doesn't work out we'll get Hylton back."

Hylton and Potts off the books to allow for 2 " senior" ins? I can't remember how we were looking for the squad rules?

Still think there’s 2/3 exits to come but think they will be loans.
Makes sense keeping Hylton nearby in case we don’t get who we want.
Would really like us to have a go at getting a couple of Reading’s decent players.

Don’t think we are anywhere near close to this given the young players in our senior squad: TC, Miles, Small, Karoy and Z.Mitchell

lets not give the SMT that excuse

Not bothered really, not sure we need another Target Man
It is quite concerning for me, that we have been after him for quite a while, and even with his bad reviews, lack of game time, and lack of impact when playing, we were still after him.

Fair enough we have got it right with defenders in Mitchell, Ramsay, Edwards and Small, but whoever is looking at players elsewhere needs replacing. Gas and now this.

There is probably thousands of strikers better than Etete that we could attain, if we were looking.

Hylton, Potts, Campbell. Jones' old boys club haven't really worked out have they? Arguably Berry to a lesser extent.

I think either a) we weren't in for him this time and it's agent talk or b) he was thought of by Andy Scott as a short term replacement that allowed Ahadme to go out on loan.

Think Scott has shown he can't pick out a good attacking player, hopefully we fix that soon

I think Potts and Hylton were far more about bringing Jones's ethos to the club than they were in for playing. They may have worked out just as Jones had hoped.

Or a defender or a midfielder.

Would you not argue that Coventry, Edwards and Mitchell have been good signings?

Potts is 30. I think there may have been higher expectations than Hylton.

Possibly, but he had been out a really long time with his injuries and had already previously spoken about potentially retiring. I think Jones suspected he was unlikely to show the form he'd previously shown.

I don't have a huge problem with the 'old boys club' with the intention of instilling a mentality, it's sort of an extension of bringing your own coaching team. But I hope it stops now as I would hope he has managed to instill the mentality he wants.

    Lua Lua too.

But then I think Small and Ramsay were Jones-linked players too I think?  And they've been out best signings recently.

It's a shame that Potts couldn't manage to get fit. He looked good on the few occasions he did play and he would likely have been a step up over Gillesphey. Leaves us with 7 players who we can stick at CB though so not urgent to replace unless we can get someone better in and it not compromise us getting a more attacking midfielder and some pace in

And yet he'll probably be brilliant if we don't get him.

My comment about squad rules was more about me not being able to remember what changes they made this year , I remember it being a sliding scale over a number of years but can't remember what this years changes were.

Jones added: "Danny (Hylton) has been really important in developing that culture and supporting the development of our young strikers, with his experience proving invaluable. He will continue to train with us and we’ll assess the situation again after the transfer window has closed."

This could mean a striker coming in or more first team action for Dixon/Casey, for me it sounds more like a potential signing the fact that he said "
we’ll assess the situation again after the transfer window has closed"

Also maybe looking to send Kanu out on loan.

Agree. At WB we have Ramsay, Small and Edwards (plus Watson and Enslin), up front we don’t have a natural replacement for TC in the striker/winger role. Kanu is a different type of striker and from the bits I’ve seen of Dixon including a few u21 streams I don’t think he’s ready yet.

Also NJ said this about both players...

on Hylton - "developing that culture"
    on Potts - "
    establish our culture"

    ...
Is the "culture" to encourage the back three to pump it up field to the big man every time and hope we get a scoring chance from a knock down or defensive mistake?

Surely developing the culture should be in the remit of experienced coaches. Money would have been better spent there than on jobs for old mates.
