Bar Ramsay and Small , who was the last " successful" last few days of the January window signing we made? Feels like most of the recent years have been panic signing loan players on deadline day when we miss out on a main target.
David Davis signed on 31 Jan and what an impact he made.
Should we be receptive to cash in by possibly selling Miles now, whilst he is still in contract? He has so much potential but we need an effective striker this month and onwards. Should we be gambling potential against using the funds to buy an older finished product?.
Admittedly it’s all a bit theoretical currently as I wouldn't imagine we would be getting big offers while he is in a quiet patch, unless a big club is prepared to gamble to buy that potential.
When he isn’t knackered (which he clearly has been the last few games) he is one of the best strikers in this league. No guarantee we will buy a better striker than him with the money we get, just look at our big striker signing this summer! Much more of a gamble selling Leaburn and thinking we can buy a better player, that’s unlikely to happen. We should definitely be keeping him until the summer
Godden played very well on Tuesday, but Leaburn comes straight back in for me. He’ll be fresh again and was on fire before the fixture schedule caught up with him a bit

I think he goes in the summer, I only realised recently that his contract doesn't expire until the summer of 2026. Personally think he has great ability in certain areas but also glaring weaknesses that will hold him back if he doesn't address them. If we can consistently get the Godden from Tuesday night I don't think Miles will get in the team often anyway so should a big offer come in I'd consider it IF we can replace him with what you described.
What do you see as Leaburn’s glaring weakness? I’d say he’s more well rounded than most young strikers, and it’s more a case of consistency with his hold up play and doing better in the air considering his height, and improving little things like getting that bit fitter, adding a bit more aggression at times, none of which is unusual for a young player.
It’ll be interesting to see if Godden can keep his place. I think there will be games when we need more physicality up front, and Leaburn at some point will grab a goal or two and show why there’s not much between them.
I think given his size he's poor at winning duels and holding the ball up, which I think would put teams off as he's bloody 6ft7. Poor ball control at times, never picks his head up when dribbling with the ball and is very greedy even if there's a better option a lot of the time. I think his strengths are unique given his size though, he almost has the skillset of a winger and is a fantastic dribbler for his size and that makes him stand out against certain teams. Still young of course but I don't think he's championship ready just yet. Think had we sold him before his injury he'd have been worth far more. I have also noticed that he's not really part of the celebrations with his team mates and tends to sulk a lot, not sure how much he wants to be here.
Names of prospective signings are now being kept secret.
Very little information is being released by the club, and Nathan Jones is now keeping his cards very close to his chest.
What a change from previous windows when everyone and their dog knew who we were interested in before long before any signings had been made.
How it should be. In contrast to previous incumbents who had a habit of bleating stuff out to all and sundry to try and make it look like they were interested in making decent signings, when in reality they had no intention whatsoever.
I genuinely don't understand people who are pissed off with us clearing out the dead wood this year and not throwing money at signings when we're finding form on the pitch.
Yes we have a gap in our midfield for someone, but the team is gelling and a quality midfielder isn't someone you just pick up at your local Tesco.
The club is damned if they do and damned if they don't with this fan base. We've had plenty of January's where we've picked up 5 or 6 players of dubious quality/fit. Seems a bit like people would prefer that to getting rid of dead wood and working with what we have?
The issue I have is that most of the dead wood being cleared out this monthonly joined us in the summer, these are players that should have helped improve the squad and they didn't. We're now light and a potential key injury or 2 away from derailing all our recent good work.
Taylor (Jones has already said that his Charlton future isn't necessarily over, and that he's gone out on loan for the game time to aid his development), and Edun joined us in 2023, Asiimwe is an Academy player
Potts and Hylton were always on short term deals
Allan Campbell is probably the only one signed in the summer with full season thinking in mind, and that loan got terminated out of our hands

He is in the top 1% of strikers in L1 for winning aerial duels and in the top 12% of all L1 players for the same thing. I agree that he needs to make the ball stick a bit more but he's good at winning the duels, his height just makes you think he should win more

I think the difference between him and Chuks is that Chuks is a lot stronger so is able to hold the defender off and head the ball to a team mate more often than Leaburn. Leaburn wins plenty but his headers don’t go to our players as much

Agree with this and @NabySarr above. He has two really good strikers to learn off. Hopefully he can bulk up a bit over the summer and improve his movement a bit. Think he's knackered too, the lack of a preseason is having an effect
I would like to see Ahadme sold. Nice bloke and a trier, but so far hardly made a difference, and you have to ask how long we have to wait in order to justify his signing. It may be that certain people at the club don’t want to lose face. Alternatively I might be wrong and Ahadme will score a dozen goals before the end of the season.
If it was necessary to clear out some unwanted players to balance the budget, and then have to wait in order to get the right players and the right price, the it’s absolutely the right thing to be doing. Good transfer business is always about getting the right players for the right price. Not just any old players for whatever the asking price is. We’ve signed players for the sake of it too often and they rarely pay off. And all clubs, except maybe Man City, have a budget and have to manage ins and outs within that budget. The club is, unfortunately, operating in reality not in some fan’s fantasy. It’s not like results have been suffering while we wait.
Time will tell what business we do and how good it is, but just because we haven’t signed anyone it doesn’t mean we’re messing the transfer window up. There’s still several day left, judge it when it’s done.
Also, everyone always assume that every signing another team makes works out, but just because some of these other clubs have done lots of business doesn’t mean they’ve signed good players that will improve them.
Quality not quantity.
Exactly. Last year Carlisle were held up as a great example of getting lots of signings done early in January in contrast to Charlton.
They were relegated and look like doing the same this year.
L Jones is a significant signing and, so far, we've not lost Small, Leaburn or anyone else vital despite many saying that they were bound to be sold.
Our previous windows under this regime have been poor to mixed and yes, this window has been as much as correcting previous mistakes than actually strengthening but the window isn't closed yet.
We can wait until the end of the window to can judge if we are stronger or not or we can go over and over the same ground, whinging as we go.
I'll go for the former.
I'd seriously question whether anyone in the history of football has ever mentioned Carlisle United as being a great example of anything.

How disappointed am I? I started this thread way back in November, since then we've had 99 pages and 3000 comments, of which, only about 10 comments have been a rumour and no 'new' actuals!! I'll let someone else start the summer '25 one, as this one has been a complete waste of time!! Let's hope that in 4 days time we've had some actual rumours and maybe an actual signing!

I don't think that's fair. Hylton and Potts were always on short term contracts as cover. Hylton covered for Miles and the inevitable injury to Chuks, Potts was to challenge Gillesphey but unfortunately couldn't stay fit. They were mostly brought in for their effect on the culture around the dressing room and Jones is clearly happy enough about that to let them go now their contracts have expired. It's just Campbell really who didn't work out, and he left because another team bought him off his parent club, otherwise I think we would have kept him. It's just Edun really who needed shifting.
Edwards, Mitchell, Docherty, Berry, Godden are all very much involved, Mannion is being kept out by injury and improvement from AMB and it's just Ahadme who hasn't made an impact yet. I don't think there's anyone left in the squad that needs moving on, it's just now a case of getting a couple more players in to fill the gaps.

Less dropped more rested in my opinion.
I like Godden, but there have been plenty of games where the ball hasn’t stuck, and he hasn’t moved much.
Tuesday’s opponents suited Matty as Rovers’ CB’s were not physically dominant. Against sides like Blackpool, away from home, Leaburn should start.

Because the holes in our squad are very clear regardless of whether we’re winning or losing. It’s all well and good saying this when we’re on good form, but as soon as we lose a couple on the bounce, which we will at some point, everyone liking your post will be decrying our lack of activity.
It’s great that we’re correcting some mistakes this window. But expecting a couple of good signings to fill those blatant holes in the squad is really not a ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ situation in the slightest.
Miles has suffered from having to come back from injury and not having a proper pre season. I think that a summers rest and a full pre season programme will see him come back as one of the best players in league one. I’m accepting that at some point in the not too distant future he’ll be gone and why would we begrudge him that. This time next year as long as he’s fit I think he’ll be worth a lot of money and I don’t mean £3 million. I think him eventually departing could be the catalyst for our real promotion challenges. Of course that would depend on how much of the fee is reinvested, which I’d hope would be significant.

Unless he signs a new contract, the ideal scenario is that we sell this summer but to a club that agrees to loan him back to us

Having a player who makes the ball stick helps a lot, but I don’t think Godden has been that player for us overall, even if he was on Tuesday night.
Leaburn’s hold up play needs to improve, but when he was scoring and playing well recently it was noticeably better. I think he’s got it in him and it’s more of a consistency problem and having that strong mentality game in game out, rather than a lack of ability. In Chuks and Hylton (who is still training with us) he’s got two players he can learn from on exactly those issues.
If Wycombe end up selling Kone for £7m I'd hope we'd get the same if not more for Miles.
I agree but we're most likely to be selling him with less than 12 months left of his contract which will decrease value significantly. Kone signed a contract in November

Strength and aggression are his glaring weaknesses and unfortunately they are a natural thing - his 'dimensions' are far greater than Chucks but he doesn't possess anything like the same power - if he did, defenders would be bouncing off him

You should read the rumours thread from last Jan, many many people complimenting their ambitious owners. A few jealous of them signing Luke Armstrong who, checks notes, scored 6 goals in the last 12 months across League One & Two and is now on loan in Scotland.
The issue I have is that most of the dead wood being cleared out this month only joined us in the summer, these are players that should have helped improve the squad and they didn't. We're now light and a potential key injury or 2 away from derailing all our recent good work.
Only Allan Campbell joined us in the summer, we signed Tayo & Taylor previous season.
Should we be receptive to cash in by possibly selling Miles now, whilst he is still in contract? He has so much potential but we need an effective striker this month and onwards. Should we be gambling potential against using the funds to buy an older finished product?.
Admittedly its all a bit theoretical currently as I wouldn't imagine we would be getting big offers while he is in a quiet patch, unless a big club is prepared to gamble to buy that potential.
Strength and aggression are his glaring weaknesses and unfortunately they are a natural thing - his 'dimensions' are far greater than Chucks but he doesn't possess anything like the same power - if he did, defenders would be bouncing off him
They are but TC has shown players can work on their strength. On aggression players don’t change their entire personality, but I remember Parker and Stephens both adding more to their game and becoming better players because of it. Konsa wasn’t impressive on that side of his game in L1 but look at him now.
Academy games also lack that physical side, some players need time to adjust and hold up strikers often mature with age - there are plenty of examples of target men peaking in their late 20s/early 30s.

Godden played very well on Tuesday, but Leaburn comes straight back in for me. He’ll be fresh again and was on fire before the fixture schedule caught up with him a bit
In contrast to previous incumbents who had a habit of bleating stuff out to all and sundry to try and make it look like they were interested in making decent signings, when in reality they had no intention whatsoever.
Potts and Hylton were always on short term deals
Allan Campbell is probably the only one signed in the summer with full season thinking in mind, and that loan got terminated out of our hands
It may be that certain people at the club don’t want to lose face.
Alternatively I might be wrong and Ahadme will score a dozen goals before the end of the season.
I'll let someone else start the summer '25 one, as this one has been a complete waste of time!!
Let's hope that in 4 days time we've had some actual rumours and maybe an actual signing!
I like Godden, but there have been plenty of games where the ball hasn’t stuck, and he hasn’t moved much.
Tuesday’s opponents suited Matty as Rovers’ CB’s were not physically dominant. Against sides like Blackpool, away from home, Leaburn should start.
It’s great that we’re correcting some mistakes this window. But expecting a couple of good signings to fill those blatant holes in the squad is really not a ‘damned if you do, damned if you don’t’ situation in the slightest.
