Thanks Elfs, it is our 25th wedding anniversary so happy to splash out a bit, however, we are not very adventurous when it comes to travel & tend to rely on package deals. Decided we will visit a local independent travel agents next week & see what they can put together for us.
I stayed in Cadiz for one week. On the first day I was thinking I’d made a mistake and I might get bored. Fortunately, the place grew on me and as the days flew past I actually felt sad having to leave. The place grows on you with its alley ways and small restaurants. I did take the train to Sevilla for the day but found the city very hot to do much and just took the tourist hop on/off bus, had something to eat and drink and headed back to Cadiz.

Had a day in Cadiz on a cruise a couple of years ago. Thought it was very interesting, plenty to see and do, decent restaurants. Med cruise next June is calling there again, looking forward to revisiting.

We took a train from Sorrento to Pompeii and I’m pretty sure it was going all the way to Naples, might be worth looking at?
    DM me for carriage numbers
I stayed in Naples a few years ago and took the train to Sorrento. Frankly Naples was such a hole, we took the train anywhere we could rather than be there. My best advice would be to stay in Sorrento.
I did the same back in 1980 - got of the train in Naples and walked to the the exit…got bad vibes and returned into the station and bought a ticket to Sorrento.
  • I loved Naples. Proper city and not just an enormous museum full of tourists which is what Venice, Rome, Florence etc etc often feel like to me as lovely as they are

can see it’s not for everyone though as it’s hectic and crazy

    It's a complete shithole
  • Any recommendations for good value all-inclusive destinations this year?
  • I enjoyed Florence but wouldn't take young kids again. The pavements are incredibly narrow and can barely fit one person, with cars and bikes flying up the roads. Trying to navigate that with two kids in either hand was a nightmare.

Quite liked Palermo when I went there, bit rough in places but enjoyed it.
  • Going to Clacton in a few weeks, any recommendations on things to do? Preferably stuff that doesn't trigger IBS.....
  • Has anyone been Sunny Beach in Bulgaria?

No such thing as cheap holidays during the school holidays.

Flights alone to Bulgaria are £400+ ea.

Once you're there it's fairly cheap but the prices are going up as it's going to Euro currency next year.

I went to both Naples and Sorrento last year. I preferred Naples. Sorrento is full of souvenir shops and tourists; it was impossible to find a restaurant with only locals in it. The only free beach I could find was tiny and the cost of excursions was high. Naples was more raw but I enjoyed getting lost in the backstreets, the street art, the shrines to Maradona and the best pizza that I have ever had.
I did quite like Sorrento but I have always preferred holidays where there aren't many tourists, especially Brits!

That's interesting to know. I wasn't aware they were switching to the Euro
  • Currently searching for a warm destination to go late October in HT, anyone have any suggestions for that time of year?

They've been talking about it for years but it's finally happening early next year.

Cyprus or the Canaries. Southern Europe is possible, but not guaranteed very warm, but might be warm/warmer than mild. Depends on how warm you want

That said, the weather this year has been hotter than the past few years, so who knows

Just be aware of sunset times at that time of year, especially if right at the end of October. Cyprus sunset will be before 5pm in that last week, Canaries more like 6:15pm in the last week (both once the clocks have gone back).

Seville is a nice city and the airport is half an hour from the centre. Combining the two should be no problem, trains run directly from Seville to Cadiz and take about an hour and a half. Good info on both to be found on these travelogues made by Michael Portillo. https://player.bbc.com/en/brand/portillos-andalucia/portillos-andalucia-s1
Thanks Algarve but unless I'm missing something, appears that stream is no longer available on iPlayer in the UK !
It is available on Channel 5 catch up, @housemate

Depends what you like. If it were me, I'd be heading to nearby Walton to see the tower (specifically the Kestrels that are nesting on the tower) and then have a nice relaxing walk around The Naze. There are a lot of people here with an interest in military history; if that's you, you might want to seek out the Martello Towers. If though, you're like the people here who liked Naples, I'd suggest a trip down the coast to Jaywick which regularly makes lists such as Britain's biggest hellholes. Finally, if you like a decent pub, check out The Moon and Starfish. It's about as spoonsy as a spoons can get. Enjoy.
