Ah great, Id be looking for somewhere fairly chill where we can lounge on a beach with potentially lots to explore in the local area.PrincessFiona said:
I lived there for 3 years, so have lots of recommendations, depending on what you want to do and for how long and when - and if you love wine! Someone on here (President?) lived there longer-term than us.CAFCTrev said:Thinking of a holiday in South Africa, possibly on the coast somewhere. Has anybody been, any recommendations?0 -
It is an amazing place but you be mindful of your security. The food and wine is wonderful and you can do beaches, wildlife, lots of different scenery and of course the winelands. Depends what you want to explore....you have to keep security in mindCAFCTrev said:

Ive heard the horror stories of tourists getting car jacked and kidnappings, and to be honest it does worry me. Is it really bad?PrincessFiona said:

Its a few years since I've lived there. But it is certainly something to be aware of. I believe the main risk would be straying into a risky areaCAFCTrev said:

Very true re security....I have family who live out there....plenty of horror stories. That said we have been out there a couple of times and haven't had any problems.PrincessFiona said:

For me SA is not to visit for R&R. If it’s for a cultural planned trip with safari and vineyards then go for it. The sea in Cape Town is freezing cold and the sharks might want to see you.I’ve been several times to SA and enjoyed it but the security risk is higher than I’ve felt in other parts of Southern Africa that I’ve visited. I felt easier in Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Kenya and Tanzania (I really enjoyed Zanzibar for R&R).2

The beaches are wonderful but I've never been swimming in the sea in SA and I've been in the Pacific Vancouver when I couldn't feel anything from the waist down after a few minutes (during the rugby season, so not the summer)Solidgone said:For me SA is not to visit for R&R. Made a last minute decision to book an air b&b for a couple of days tomorrow. Other than the football ground, never been there before. Weather doesn’t look great but looking forward to us getting away for a break.0

Wife and I finished last week. Took 40 days (including 6 rest days) to walk the 800 kms. Probably shouldn’t have done it as have problems with my left ankle but got through it with daily icing and large doses of Ibuprofen.robinofottershaw said:Started walking the Camino Frances across Northern Spain on Friday. Currently in Pamplona. Approximately 730 kms to go until we arrive in Santiago de Compostela on 14th October.4 -
Definitely worth having a hotel with a pool if staying in Cape Town.Solidgone said:For me SA is not to visit for R&R. If it’s for a cultural planned trip with safari and vineyards then go for it.
