Tuesday 3rd December 2024
Kick-Off: 19:45 - Live on Sky Sports
Referee
Craig Hicks - Previously officiated a Charlton match in what was Nathan Jones first game in charge, away at Reading in February.
Introduction
We're into the third round! A convincing 4-0 win at Walsall mean we progress with the opportunity to play against the big boys, we find out our fate at 7pm on Monday when the draw is made. But back to league action we go, and after our win away Burton last midweek where the team stayed up north following the defeat in Huddersfield, we are finally back on home soil. By the time Tuesday rolls round, it will have been 38 days since we last played a league fixture at The Valley.

Crawley appointed former Charlton keeper Rob Elliot at the beginning of October following a year in charge at Gateshead. League form has started to improve following a tough start to life in charge (5 straight defeats with 16 goals conceded) but goals conceded remains a theme for this Crawley team as they lost 4-3 to Lincoln in the second round of the cup after being 2-0 up inside 13 minutes. In all of Elliot's games in charge, they've scored 19 and conceded 28 - this fixture has the potential to be the highest scoring game at The Valley this season (it will end 0-0 now won't it...).
Elliot is not the only former Charlton connection at the Broadfield Stadium, Crawley have a different way of doing things in terms of recruitment and they signed former academy product Charlie Barker from non-league side Wealdstone in the summer and the 21 year-old has been featuring regularly. It will be interesting to see how he deals with fellow 21 year-old and academy striker, Miles Leaburn. Another player is Panutche Camara, the midfielder joined last summer on loan with high hopes of being able to play a part in a successful side. Unfortunately for us and him, it did not work out with injuries playing a big factor in that. This season though, Camara has featured 16 times in the league including starting their last 3 fixtures. As long as he is fit, you would anticipate he comes into the team on Tuesday.
Charlton Team News
After two wins in a row, we look to make it three and consecutive clean sheets alongside those too. To make it more positive, we are starting to get some players back fit and available. The Dan's returned to the matchday squad on Saturday, Potts and Kanu, following their respective injuries. It's hoped that we may have another one soon with Lloyd Jones reported close to a return, if not this fixture, he might be back on Saturday against Lincoln where Docherty will also be back after serving his 3 match ban. Let's hope others start to return too and we can begin to go on a run of positive form.
In terms of the team for this fixture, after a 4-0 win away from home, in my mind you keep the same team as long as everyone is fit. Personally I would still like to see Leaburn start, but after Ahadme scored twice and we need to be careful of Leaburn, it would be good for us to name the same 11. The bench might look slightly different with Kanu and Leaburn as the strikers instead of Hylton. Potts, if Jones is not yet available, will probably be in the squad ahead of young Laqeretabua.

I wonder how ACampbell would get in on the diamond as well. He's clearly out of place at the top of the box and hasn't found his place in the three but I'd be interested to see how he'd do in Anderson's role in the side of the diamond. On recent evidence probably very badly but maybe we'll see.
Then win.
2-0 win . Ahadme & Godden
I reckon if we win this, win at Lincoln, and then follow it up with a further 28 wins we should be alright
- This will be the first ever EFL meeting between Charlton Athletic and Crawley Town; the Addicks have only won one of the last 10 occasions that they have faced a side for the first time in the top four tiers (D6 L3), beating Burton Albion 2-1 in November 2018.
- The last two meetings between Charlton and Crawley in all competitions (both in the EFL Trophy) have both seen seven goals scored, with the Addicks winning 6-1 in August 2021 and the Red Devils winning 4-3 in September 2023.
- Charlton have only lost one of their last 14 home league games (W5 D8), a 1-2 defeat to Blackpool in September.
- Crawley Town are winless in their last seven away league matches (D2 L5), failing to score in five of them (2 goals total).
