In-depth interview with Managing Director James Rodwell 🗣️

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mnoe8i0R8g8

    YouTube AI summary:

This video features an in-depth interview with Charlton Athletic's Managing Director, James Rodwell, reflecting on the club's summer transfer activity and strategic evolution.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Strategic Evolution (0:00 - 1:15): Rodwell explains that the club is focused on evolving as a football entity by blending experienced signings with young talent to build for the future.
    • Recruitment Strategy (1:16 - 2:00): Post-Brexit, the club has expanded its recruitment network abroad to remain "nimble and agile" in a market where domestic talent is often overpriced.
    • Financial Sustainability (2:52 - 3:35): The club maintains a commitment to financial responsibility, claiming to be the lowest net spender of transfer fees in the division, while being supported by ownership when the right opportunities arise.
    • Player Retention (4:15 - 5:30): Securing long-term contracts for key players like Lloyd Jones, Kane Ramsey, and Tyrese Campbell is emphasized as a critical component of the club’s planning.
    • Squad Management (6:40 - 7:48): Rodwell discusses the difficulties of managing a squad size in a congested, "over-populated" game calendar, noting that injuries and the high volume of fixtures require difficult decision-making.
    • Academy Importance (9:35 - 10:20): The academy remains a pillar of the club's strategy, with Rodwell highlighting that the team's recent front three were all academy graduates.
    • Player Departures (11:35 - 12:16): The MD acknowledges the emotional and strategic difficulty of letting important players leave, such as the captain's departure on deadline day, which was necessary to fit within the club's current operational constructs.

More self promotion in case he needs to boost his CV?

Amazing our comms can stretch to this but not get messaging out for the bag policy!

People ask for transparency, they get it, and then people scream about people profiling. Just idiotic
He’s not saying anything new. So it’s not really transparency.

The point is we can manage this in a professional way but not the more mundane practical / logistical stuff impacting supporters - ticketing / bags / catering etc.
  • I wonder who would be the spokesperson to address the off field issues that are beginning to seriously concern and affect the regular supporters ?

In fact, do we know the names of ANY of the departmental Senior Managers these days?

A cloak of secrecy envelops The Valley.....All for one & one for all or stick your head over the parapet only if threatened with the red card ?

Not sure why you’re taking your anger out on Rodwell. Absolutely it’s a concern and needs addressing but his role is to get things working on the pitch not off it

Trying to spin the lowest net spend in the division as being 'financially responsible' is a choice.
If you truly were financially responsible, you wouldn't be involved in a football club.

I'd be surprised if this was actually true. Would have thought the 3 newly promoted sides would have been below us.

For the past two seasons I thought that supporters have been appointed as a point of contact for off the field issues that the fans want to address.
If correct, have there been meetings?

Did he mention how the current squad fits into his 8 8 8 policy?

It's more like a 9-9-9 now with the bigger squad, according to Carter.

    Academy/young development talent
    Leaburn
    Campbell
    Mwamba
    Mbick
    Nkeng
    Bindon
    Koumetio
    Sichenje
    Ouma

    Squad players
    Apter
    Rankin-Costello
    Knibbs
    Mannion
    Godden
    Alli
    Mesik
    Chalobah
    Kelman
    Edwards

    Good for the level
    Ramsay
    Jones
    Mcnamara
    Skipp
    Carey
    Bell
    Okonkwo
    Coventry
    Grant

A couple of these are interchangeable IMO like Coventry and Chalobah, and of course the internal classification of a player being decent at this level compared to just a squad player will vary from them to the fans.

Like if he hits form I'd move Kelman to "good for this level" and relegate Mcnamara to squad as he's meant to be backup to Ramsay, but his early season form has pushed him up a bit in my personal estimations.

I messaged the fan advocate account on twitter about the club shop shambles and they asked me to email them and they will help out, I’ve sent two emails and not heard a word back in nearly two weeks. Chocolate teapot comes to mind.

He was specifically talking about net transfer fees.  According to Google AI he is correct... But it's obviously only based on rumoured fees as fees generally undisclosed.

What will be interesting at the end of the season is how well the Cardiff, Lincoln and Bolton fees have been spent in terms of

    a) do they stay up and
    b) do they make money from any of those bought in.

We achieved a) last season but it's noticeable our most saleable assets are probably TC, M'Bick, Leaburn and Lloyd Jones.  None of which were bought in by NJ or Chapple.

    It’s not anger.

I’m just very unimpressed with the complete lack of comms capability we now have.

The template announcement of every signing with JR predictably adding his views, the text if we win asking me to buy a ticket and this shameless self promotion. It’s so predictable it’s not generating enthusiasm or interest.

But we also get the basic logistical comms completely wrong.

It takes time to make these videos but we don’t appear to have time to do the basic comms.

We run on a shoestring budget we are told so prioritise the right things.

Net Spend is a shit metric; it's a great graphic on Sky Sports News, but it's meaningless if we're spending £1m a year more on TC, Kayne and Lloyd's wages, that isn't included, or the wages of Grant, or the cost of the loan for Bindon, Skipp and Arthur.

Some important quotes from my 'main man'.  And beautifully delivered in a spontaneous fashion.  No rehearsal needed.

    But one or two observations:

    1) In terms of signing young players and then looking for the big re-sale ... "It's a little bit harder said than done"'

    ... Riiiight.

    2) When the word 'club' is used as a noun, it cannot be said without it being preceded by the adjective 'football'.  This immediately clarifies any uncertainty that you may have.

    We get it, Jim.

    Shoestring ... but sustainable.

Put together the catering, the bag drop, Valley Express & overpriced matchday ticket issues - all concerning for those who pay their hard earned & expect a satisfactory matchday experience - and ask yourself if "they who make the decisions" are happy to have numerous fan groups, volunteers and even a paid fan advocate/adviser or two tasked with liaising with supporters, how much notice is taken of said feedback when it comes to decision making time?

Are these merely tick box exercises & every time, those decisions are made 99% based on budget NOT on the concerns of loyal "customers".

How can the OS display contact details for supporters when emails are not responded to as appears to be a common theme ?

And how much importance do "they"actually give to CAST 's input?

Such paths which claim to be a clear link between club & fans to bring them closer together are not fit for purpose  on the whole IMO.

Call me a cynic but fine words butter no parsnips.

But there is ONE positive at this moment in time.

The advent of the lauded Membership Scheme has been shelved pro tem....Just think what a fiasco that might have been !  B)

That’s not true, if his title (MD) is taken at face value. The club is a single business , revenue from fans supports the football side, so it falls under his remit with that title, and the salary that goes with it. And if not him, then who?

That said, he is far from unique in football. Its one of my big bugbears, whether they have the title MD or CEO, they don’t have the responsibilities and pressures of someone with those titles in a normal business of similar turnover. Yet they argue that their salary is benchmarked against the “wider market”. Its nonsense. None of them could do the MD or CEO job in a mid sized consumer goods company.

It looks to me like he is actually doing a decent job on the football side, and I think he attracts flak because he clearly spends a lot of his salary on his appearance - he will probably argue its necessary in the role. But somebody competent needs to take charge of the consumer -facing part of the club.

Since Rodwell has come in he’s always been working on the footballing operations and clearly has a huge role in liaising with the ownership + recruitment, it does need looking at but he wouldn’t be able to do his job as effectively if he would have to also deal with complaints or commercialisation aspects as well. It does need looking at but personally think that’s more of a job for someone in a financial role than a footballing role

I’m not gonna pretend I know what it takes to have a hierarchy role in football, but the fact I’ve never heard anyone in football describe their job as easy or straightforward is probably very telling. The ownership board got rid of Scott and Methven but have kept Rodwell on to me that at least shows they’re happy on what he’s doing.

The footballing side and the commercial side have to be under different directors. Rodwell's title of MD is a misnomer - he is to all intents and purposes the DoF. JR has a full role which will include the first team recruitment, the 'under' age groups and the Academy, data analysis, medical/fitness/conditioning/nutrition et al.

We are missing a CEO (or rather a very good COO). Stoke City had a CEO who was in essence a COO - when he left they replaced him with a COO, who is exceptional btw. The Chairman (owner) is hands on as well (but not full-time) and he brings together the COO and the DoF. Stoke of course are not the same as us in that they had shared services access to bet365 - e.g. my teams as Group CHRO and the Group Property Director, plus a host of bean counters and payroll - but a good team reporting to the COO can service those needs.

The fan advisors/advocates etc etc are simply being used by the club as a barrier to reduce the amount of queries/complaints that the club has to deal with.

So when someone on CL suggested I'd be the ideal for the "job" I thought thanks but no thanks.

I couldn't ignore requests for assistance, so I'd most likely be working full time for zero pay.
