Mostly, it was a frustrating afternoon in South East London. That is, until the very end.
Visitors Shrewsbury Town were blunt in an almost non-existent attack and, whilst keeping them contained and limited to set pieces, the Addicks found it difficult to then break through themselves. Second half changes made some difference, but it was ultimately a case of persistence.
Leaving it to the last moment, on 95+ minutes the Valley suddenly burst into life when Thierry Small pounced into the box to prod home the winner. Composed and sure, Small came in from the far side to meet the ball after a bit of a scramble found him one on one with the onrushing keeper. It’s a fitting end to the match as the young fella has been in fine form but unable to keep composure when he’s had the opportunities of late.
Three points in the bank turned around an annoying afternoon, setting us up nicely for Tuesday night where we have the opportunity to piece together a bit of a run.
Charlton 1 Shrewsbury 0

Chucks causing mayhem in the box. If only he wasn’t always injured19

I said on the match thread we should stop Thierry Small shooting. I was wrong.
In the words of Rarmani Edmonds Green: BIG WIN!19 -
It wasnt the best of matches, but I enjoyed that... We played well, and was a difficult showing against a team who clearly showed up for the point, with the aim of getting all three if a chance like that injury time moment fell to them properly.
Had the feeling it would go the way of the 0-0 with Reading though
Lets be honest... Nothing will ever beat a 95th minute winner!!8 -
I'm first4

A solid but not outstanding performance for the first 90mins. Then those last 6 and we were all over them. Even if they had a chance on 92 mins.
They pressed well and out muscled us at times
But had little or no threat for 90mins..1 -
Much like Tuesday night, a great result, but not a great performance. Had their keeper not have died and wasted a good few minutes, we would have never had scored in the allotted time.0

One of the best corner flag destructions I’ve seen. Big win.32

The games playoff teams win and those on the outside looking in rue at the end of the season.
Could just have easily been a soul crushing 0-1. Instead, well, Tiny Tel comes up huge.
In years past we lose that game. Two months ago we draw it. Today, after pressuring Reading and Mansfield and not finding a breakthrough, we won. Massive.

You can't beat an injury time winner.12

And this is why you never leave early, although by the sounds of the rest of the match, I should imagine it was incredibly tempting. I'm so pleased for Small, because he's been creating some good chances lately but his shooting his been somewhat wayward. It's going to create an interesting dilemma once Ramsay is fully fit.

Reminds me of the Orient game earlier in the season. Never really that troubled but struggling just to get that ball over the line until the dying seconds. It's much nicer doing good things in injury time rather than waiting for the inevitable goal against us like we got used to under Appleton. Still need a bit more fluidity but no shortage of heart in the team

A win is a win is a win!! And that was a very important win looking at the table. That said, we were pretty poor for the most part and struggled to create anything much against a pedestrian spoiling team who had the two best chances of the match prior to the goal. We lost whatever shape we had and resorted to hoofball with the subs. But who cares, we won! Onwards and onwards. Only 4 points off fifth now.6

For a team in "form", that was a worrying performance for their fans. Oh and I'm also disappointed, as our goal means that the bottom four arent all on 21-pts now, as my OCD was enjoying the sight of that... Oh well... Never mind!6 -

That’s why we love the game. Bored to tears for 95 minutes. Nearly (should have) lost it a few minutes earlier, and then out of nowhere we’re kings of the world.
Successful teams find a way to win and we did. Was it a bit harsh on a Shrewsbury team who defended doggedly? Yes. Was it a bit fortunate after we failed to create really any other clear chances? Yes. Do I give a fuck? No.
Big big result that now needs to be backed up with another win on Tuesday. As a performance, it’s highlighted, perfectly, why we need to add one or two more players in the attacking third to give some more creative spark and options to change things up. We have to get better at breaking down sides that defend like Shrewsbury did. That’s a problem for another day though, tonight is about enjoying the rewards for keeping on keeping on two games running.18 -
We all know Shrewsbury are never easy, add Ainsworth into that and you get a match like that. We really struggle to break down teams that set up to just defend.BUT that is a massive 3 points in terms of defining our season. Not a chance we win that game the last few seasons. Maybe it’s luck or desire I don’t care tbh this lot are somehow going to get us promoted5

Luke Berry is, I think it can no longer be argued with, a horrible void in the heart of our play, a waning higher level grafter turned luxury wage thief. I fucking hate him and all the players who fit this exact mould that we keep signing for some reason19
