MATCH PREVIEW: Leyton Orient vs Charlton Athletic | Saturday 1st March 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off

Leyton Orient vs Charlton Athletic
Saturday 1st March 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Tom Reeves

Its time to begin the first of three games... a triple header that could go some way to defining our season, but whatever the outcome... wont decide our season - After all, a maximum of nine points can have us looking at even greater prizes, and the faint hope that we may yet achieve second spot, in this very unpredictable season - Zero points from these three games, would in short, be a disaster... Yet we wouldnt be completely out of the picture, instead we'd give ourselves a mountain to climb back up - Either way, it all begins on Saturday!!

The Opposition
Name: Leyton Orient (6th) - Manager: Richie Wellens
Ground: Brisbane Road
Previous League Result: Birmingham 2-0 Leyton Orient

Next up for the Addicks, and the start of this all important triple header is a trip across the River Thames with hosts; Leyton Orient awaiting our arrival.

Among the welcoming committee from Orient will be Rarmani Edmonds-Green, Diallang Jaiyesimi and Darren Pratley... all of whom have links with Charlton, although Saturday may well be a game too many for Darren Pratley. Now 40-years old, and in the twilight of his career; Pratley played the full 90mins as ten man battling Leyton Orient fell to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of high flying Birmingham City, so you'd expect to see him on the bench for tomorrow's clash.

Elsewhere and Leyton Orient come into this particular clash with a bit of an injury crisis, and will be without key Centre-Back; Dan Happe in Defence, amongst others. It means that Jack Currie's red card against Birmingham will have been unwelcome for Manager Richie Wellens, who'll now be without the Left-Back as an option. However, top scorer: Charlie Kelman (10-goals), was quickly rested after the game changing moment at St. Andrews on Tuesday night, so will  come into this clash much rested compared to the majority of his team mates.

Orient themselves come into this fixture having conceded two more goals than the Addicks, having played a game more... But they are a side who know where the net is, so it'll be imperative that we limit their chances, and so stifle any creativity from Spurs loanee: Jamie Donley who has made a name for himself in recent weeks after an impressive moment against Manchester City in the FA Cup.

Charlton Team News
Two games between these sides have resulted in a grand total of three goals this season, with those coming in the League and EFL Trophy... Whats crazy is the fact that the earliest goal scored between the two teams in those games, is the 92nd minute!! - Its a reminder that this fixture may well be anything but a classic, with both sides reluctant to hand any advantage to the opposition. Especially with both sides strong in defence.

Our last fixture against Leyton Orient, the 2-0 defeat in the EFL Trophy, wasnt a classic... However that day we involved inexperienced U21s in Kai Enslin, Kaheim Dixon and Josh Laqeretabua - All three played well that evening, compared to the experienced members of the squad. Yet performances have changed drastically since that night, meaning that Charlton should be a completely different proposition for Leyton Orient to handle.

We could well be unchanged from the team that despatched Exeter with ease a week ago. Although Greg Docherty should hopefully return from the illness that kept him out last weekend - Whilst Alex Mitchell could also return to the bench, given his own absence against the Grecians.

Mannion
Ramsay - Jones - Gillesphey
Small - Coventry - Docherty - Edwards
Berry
Campbell - Godden

Substitutes Bench: Reid - Mitchell - Anderson - Gilbert - Kanu - Leaburn - Hylton

An i an i, my kingdom for an i..🙄
    • Leyton Orient have won each of their last two home league games against Charlton Athletic and could win three in succession for the first time since November 1959.
    • Charlton Athletic have won seven of their last 10 league games against Leyton Orient (L3), scoring 17 goals in total across those victories.
    • Leyton Orient have won seven of their last nine home league games (D1 L1), keeping seven clean sheets across that time.
    • Charlton have lost just two of their last 15 league games (W9 D4), scoring at least twice in 10 of their last 13.

    Is that a pain, or a pan...😉
  • 0-2 Campbell and Godden and the bandwagon gathers pace...
  • No Chuks on the bench?
  • This is a big one .
If we keep Charlie Kelman quiet then I think we can win but that won’t be easy . Not sure if we will put Ramsey or Anderson on him to man mark him ?
    I’d take a draw and that’s what I’m predicting.
    A Desmond 2-2 ( Godden and Leaburn )

  • Big game. Looking forward to this one. Chuks for Hylton. Wonder if Anderson will keep his place? Going for a win. 2-1. Godden and TC. UTA
  • It will be hard to drop Anderson after his quality display last week but I suppose the Doc will be back. If Small and TC are on fire, I think we will win. If not, a boring 0 0 draw.
  • this is a test.

win this and I will believe we can make playoffs

Lose and I fear we will fall away

What a shame we don't score goals otherwise we'd be in a much better position in the league.

Or are we scoring the wrong type of goals by the wrong type of players?

If I was picking the side tomorrow Karoy would be in my team, no question about it (I'm not going to say "he'd be the first name on my team sheet" because that would be Mannion, followed by the back three ... then Rambo Ramsay, ConCov ... so he'd be the seventh name on my team sheet ;)).

You can't drop a player to the bench after a performance like that, his confidence should be sky high so you'd say to him "go out there, boy, and do it again ... break up their possession, win the ball back for us ... and if you do that it'll go a long way to us not losing and possibly winning".
  • Massive weekend in terms of prospects this season if we can win this and a couple of other results go our way we could be in the box seat for the season. Fail to with and Bolton and reading could go above us !

hopefully the occasion in terms of importance doesn’t get to our youngsters and they play their normal game. If they do I think we will win 1-3 and the bus keeps rolling on
  • PS I think after last Campbell will slot another goal from outside the box

  • Would expect Chucks on the bench rather than Hylton.
    I'd prefer Chuks.

    ;)
  • I fear we may choke. I am hoping this is years of conditioning...

    1-0
  • This is a big game. If we win it will put us in a very strong position with a game in hand on the Os. We can afford to lose it but we need to ensure our rivals don't take points off us. We have to try to impose our game on them and if we can do that I think we will win.
  • 50 years since my first ever game, Orient Vs Charlton at Brisbane Road, abandoned at half time at nil nil due to a waterlogged pitch  :)

Tomorrow could deliver any result, but I'm confident I'll get a full 90 this time!
  • I have yet to see us win at Orient and will be hoping this breaks tomorrow. A very tough game but they do have injury concerns. If we can ride an early storm as they go at us from the ofr we could nick this. Last year on Boxing Day was the ultimate low point, we need to use that as inspiration. 1-1, honours even.

Take a point and back it up with a home win against Barnsley in midweek.

Taking points off of Orient during one of their home games will be almost as important as accruing the points for ourselves. Three points for them out of this match is worse news than zero points for us IMO.

4-1 to us. We are due giving someone a right tonking - injuries and games catch up to the Orient legs - they don't do well against top 8 anyway and we very much do. If they play REG at centre back I reckon Godders and Leaburn know EXACTLY how to get at him from training.

Thank Christ you are not our manager

Had a chat with Mat Roper, of Orient's Pandemonium fanzine. He started the Olympic Stadium campaign. lovely bloke. What you've written is exactly how they see it too. And he says they too set up to play high press, high tempo. What with a stadium sold out more than a week ahead, this game starts to have a real "event" feel about it. Looking forward to it, but no idea which way it will go. Neither has Mat!
