Stockport Stewards

Did anybody else have any incidents with the Stockport stewards today?

As soon as I set foot in the ground, a steward accused me of not having a ticket. After I produced it, he signalled to two of his mates and had them make the same accusation as I passed them.

There were only a few of us in the ground at this point. I was walking around having a look, while others were taking pictures, or got out of their seats to go the toilets.

The stewards were straight on all of us telling us that we had to remain in our seats and couldn't leave them until the game was over.

I left and waited in the refreshments area, then returned shortly before kick off. I found my seat taken and went looking for another seat. As soon as I sat down, one of the stewards who had been giving me aggro earlier was straight on me and told me to sit in my assigned seat.

I told him that somebody was sat there and was told to sort it out myself as I would be removed from the stadium if I didn't sit there. Naturally, the guy wouldn't move as he was with his family, so I had to move to the other end where nobody was sat in their assigned seats.

It seems that they were enforcing fixed seating for some fans, but not others, which made little sense.

I assume others had it worse than I did?

Fans from other clubs have had problems with their stewards.
It was on here in the last couple of weeks.

They have Dave Challinor and Clint Hill breathing all through their club.

I’ve never known anything like it. How can these clubs not see that unrestricted seating for away fans makes it easier for everyone? I couldn’t believe how many stewards there were as well.

For some of them, I'm sure they long for the "good ol' days" of football hooliganism, to give them a reason to beat people up for nothing.

I tend to find it gets worse the lower down the leagues the team usually are, and the further north you get up the country.

Best stewards I've experienced were at Bournemouth, worst were Blackpool away one year, absolutely horrendous

Last week a Blackpool supporter came on here warning about Stockport security, particularly the one with tattoos on his face.

Some stewards are alright, most are blokes who didn’t get into the police/army/whatever and think that their fluorescent jacket gives them an excuse harass and intimidate paying customers, it’s nuts.

Who generally can't hold their hands up and cry when they're angry. Usually claiming they like rugby and definitely not football, because football is for panzies, even though they've never even been to a rugby game, let alone playing in one. You'll also find that they'll work for a wheel clamping firm, or similar, and have a samurai sword or scimitar on their living room wall.

I saw this before I went up today and was expecting something to kick off. As far as I am aware, nobody was removed from the ground today though?

I spoke to the police outside after the game and was told that they have received several complaints about stewards at literally every home game this season.

I was given an email address for the police officer in control of stewarding at Stockport. I will also be emailing Stockport County FC and the company that employs the stewards (Capricorn Security Group).

Even County's own fans want them gone. The club must be tied down to a contract with them that's difficult to get out of.

That theory was proven when a steward at Plymouth told me i dropped a fiver. 👌🏻On the other hand one at Wigan advised me to grab a coffee as i looked a little drunk.

Shame on the Wigan steward, he should have bought you a drink.

Some stewards are great, I always like to buy an away programme.

At Exeter this season i was told they were on sale inside the ground. When i got there, they weren't. But i asked a steward about this and he went off and try and get one for me. He must have been away for about 5 mins before he returned with one.

It was daft that we couldn't leave that way anyway, as the Charlton and Stockport fans ended up together once we reached the end of the alley. And surprise surprise, no issues anyway.

Exeter is a lovely ground to visit, when I went a few years back they gave out a free hot drink to all away fans.
  • Stewards can be a funny bunch, but today they were all fine (in my experience). They let us stand at the back behind the seats all game, no problem.

Stewards/ Bouncers are generally fine and have to deal with drunk/coked up gobshites that usually cause far more grief than the said Stewards.
But I was told by a Bouncer a few years ago if you want to embarrass a bouncer just make out that you know them from the time they were Trustee in a local prison as their colleagues are all over that kind of thing.

I noticed this happening at the far end from where we entered (where I ended up), but that area had decent stewards. The stewards causing the problems were at the opposite end and seemed to be following the instructions of one man who was determined to rile up fans and have as many people removed from the ground as he could. I don't think anybody took the bait.

I was supposed to be sat around those stewards but when I sat near my occupied seat, I was threatened with removal from the ground if I didn't physically remove the man who was sat in my allocated seat (he had already refused to move), so I moved to the other end away from the stewards causing the problems.
