I never felt that was going to happen, after TC missed that early chance. We attacked, some of the approach work was excellent. But how many near misses were there? The very first minute, and then that’s it. There were a lot of dangerous situations, usually TC getting to the by-line on the left of the box, sometimes Small on the right. But the ball in from them never found a red shirt.I suppose that the stats for shots on target would be the one that might shed some light on this, if someone could look at that for the top 6, but maybe since the turn of the year, once we became good.
Suppose we get less on target than our now rivals, why might that be?. Well, we haven’t got enough finishers on the pitch. TC cannot-yet-finish like JR-S could. 15 goals that boy got for us, in a crap team. Anyway yesterday TC was mainly all about trying to set up the final pass for a finisher, and there really was only one on the pitch at any one tîme, Godden or Miles - and Godden obvs much more the fox in the box type. Its still the part of the NJ plan that I don’t quite get. If we had JR-S In TC’s place then I would get it. CB-T? Not so sure about that. He scored a few but he wasn’t very poised. Presumably the idea of the plan is that midfielders do some of that finishing. Berry does it sometimes but I dont recall him with a shot on target yesterday? Maybe Gilbert. He was certainly trying to get on the scoresheet on Tuesday and he wasnt far off.
Just my nagging doubt…
Some said we were destined to stay in league one for at least another season in December, understandably not expecting a transformation of form after the Crawley defeat at home.
I wonder how many now expect our goal scoring form to continue until the end of the season though? Nothing wrong with you trying to allay the fears of those concerned with our goal tally across it's entirety, and hopefully you'll be right.
However, I wasn't one who thought the season was over before it was half complete, and I have reservations too as it isn't over yet. If I've learnt anything in my years supporting Charlton, it's that things happen you least expect.0 -
This has been one of oddest post match threads of the season.Reading the last several pages of discussion you'd never guess we won yesterday and it was our 7th home league win in a row.32

Their highest goalscorer has seven goals (Lee, Cleworth and Fletcher all tied). They’re sharing goals out too
They brought in Smith in the window, whom a few on here were talking up, and the other six are all seasoned pros or a young player for whom they paid decent money. I have seen it suggested that such a large number of senior strikers brings its own problems, but I doubt Parky would take any of ours over his right now.
But then again, if you'd reminded me that we went to Wembley with just Lyle Taylor and...er....Josh Parker, then maybe I'd have shut up😀
The issue, if there is one, maybe there isn't, is that we are not great at turning superiority into goals, and when we come up against good teams we might come to regret that.
@Manic_mania I assume you watched it yesterday. If so can you honestly tell me that when the second half reached 70 minutes and we still hadn't turned our superiority into a third goal, you were chilled and saying to yourself, "no worries, we've got this"? If so, you are a far less anxious person than me, and I envy you.3 -

When we're excellent like yesterday there's not much to discuss the vast majority are happy and we're nearly all in agreement.
Yes there are the usual miseries but they will always moan it's what they do, it's who they are.5 -
Loved the atmosphere- I can't remember the Valley like that since the Bowyer promotion season. As for the football, I thought 2-0 flattered Wigan. They tried to get back into the game but there were large periods we were camped in their half. A few poor passes, a few too many step-overs and we never increased our advantage. And being league 1, our solid defence leaked a late goal and the last few minutes were panicky. Some of those hoofs out of defence straight to their players suggested we were worried.
But three more points, and the teams around us will be worried about meeting us now.5 -
Yes, and I was anxious at the time. What i'm NOT is anxious after the fact because we did, in fact win. I am also not going to be anxious over if someone gets injured or if we had 6 shots in a game instead of 10. If we start losing/drawing too many games that that would be fair enough but we are probably in the best form in the country right now so why not enjoy it instead of nit picking?
I rock up now expecting to win every week. A rare old feeling. The players appear to share that belief and good on them for believing it. I see it in Ramsay and Jones in particular. They simply ooze a sense that they are better than their direct opponent. What a beautiful sight it is to see us so utterly dominant over our opponents. The Wigan fella bouncing off Ramsay as he set up the opener was pure poetry. "Have that you northern no-mark. We are Charlton."
Who's gonna bully this team? Who thinks they're better than us? No one in this division right now. Bring your mates along to Huddersfield, every empty seat is an insult to this group of players. Let's do our bit and end our League One purgatory.15 -

Plenty of other times since then have been suddenly, acutely, disappointing, but yesterday would have matched almost any for me. Yes, i am all in, hoping for second place, and agree with Golfie and Prague that there are genuine aspects to worry about. This anxiety is accentuated by the very fact of hoping for second place, as we are walking a tighter tight rope for it. We can afford less slip ups as each set of fixtures goes by, then once/ if the play offs come into view, we'll probably have to deal with Stockport again.
My additional fear is this squad may get awestruck in the bigger arenas of Wrexham and Wembley. I thought that showed itself a little at Birmingham, and earlier at Reading. Have to be grateful that this is Jones's job to manage. Meanwhile, hope of 2nd place is still alive for another week but pessimism is probably your friend, a psychological safety mechanism, when PTSD is your enemy2 -
I have advance PTSD for us missing out on 2nd on goal difference and how golfie et al respond to that6

First: yesterday's game. Great to see the AC Stand fuller than I have seen it for some time. I wonder how many people took advantage of the six match ticket? It was squeaky bum time during the last ten minutes and it shouldnt have been. We should have scored more, which brings me onto my second point.
Yes, the goal diffference argument. Surely, if we are to make second, we need to win most of our games. Assuming we don't get any hammerings, nine games will vastly improve our goal difference. Meantime, Wycombe and Wrexham will need to lose and draw some games if we're going to be up there. So our GD will probably be better than theirs during that period if that scenario happens. But will it be enough?
It would be good to see us give a team a good beating though!

I think our goal difference to Wrexham is small enough that should we overtake them or match them for points, that ours could be higher than theirs. In the context of the play offs our goal difference to Bolton in 7th could be worth an extra point.0

Weegie Addick said:Noticeably long Qs at ticket office pre match. And had to Q for ladies’ loo at HT for the first time this season so definitely a much bigger crowd.A really fun day and somehow seemed to keep meeting Irish people - some pre match and others afterwards in RAH. All live locally and were occasional or first time visitors. One group had last attended v Crawley at home yet still came back for more and hopefully had a much better experience!
My one concerning thought is that we need to guard against arrogance - it was there a bit in some of the pre match previews / predictions. It was there in our showboating from midway in second half - Jones staying forward, a few too many tricks and flicks. We’d been in control and first to every 50/50 but then we got Wigan a bit riled and nearly let them back in it. And finally it was there when NJ brought on two subs in injury time when we were defending a corner. Just don’t please.
And ref second half was indeed “horrible” as per our friend’s little grandson.Three points in the bag. That’s what counts.0 -

Anyone claiming PTSD, you are of course wrong. It is in fact a Post Traumatic Charlton Disorder (PTCD). A lifelong condition, which hopefully will alleviate in May.6

Looking good at the moment:

What’s this, in the last 6, 10, and 12 games we have essentially scored more goals and improved our GD over all our rivals.
That can’t be right, I thought we didn’t score enough goals.8 -
Posh in irritatingly good form. We do enjoy bottling it again them too! Hopefully Jones has them laser focused3

Too many people are over-thinking it. Forget the permutations, the number of goals we score, the number of goals we concede, who does what, we just have one task and that is to go out and win each game as it comes, and only as it comes. It doesn’t matter whatsoever as to how we do it, nothing else matters.28

Apart from the very first minute how many serious efforts on goal did we have in the second half?
At the moment we are like 'a juggernaut going down the hill' as Chicago Addick wrote on his blog.
NJ seems completely focused on carrying on winning and the team is playing together in a way we have not seen for years. Look how hard it is to pick a MOM.
It may blow up, look what happened to Orient, but the momentum is with us, very important with 9 games to go.2 -
