Correct me if I'm wrong but NJ hasn't signed many players who he hasn't come into contact with in a previous life - so any such are the transfer rumours I would take most seriously.
Big difference now is that he trusts Phil Chapple to come up with players that will fit into Jones ethos.
I agree here with Shooters. He's not a Guru for nothing, you know.
Phil Chapple has a very decent reputation in the game as a top scout.
He's worked with NJ before.
No point bringing in Chapple if the 'wanted list' was already decided.
Loan with an option to buy would be ideal. Reckon he would start for us.
Very tidy player but going to be about 5 clubs interested in him. Rumoured to be on 10k a week at Birmingham so definitely not out of reach but if other clubs start offering big loan fees as well not sure we would be able to get him
That's the issue, although, it may help us that Birmingham probably don't see us a threat to their league position? They might prefer to send him to a team that won't be challenging top6 in their eyes.

Who’s place would you see him taking? Not saying he wouldn’t start for us.
For me Docherty, hypothetically.
Docherty is a league1 quality player imo. I am expecting us to upgrade on him.
I think Jones should be club captain and Docherty shouldn't be starting. Might sound harsh but it just worries me how little he played for Hull and he's never really done it at this level.
Sorry to any Doc fans but I'd like to see us sign two new mids to play with Cov.
Wow, three seasons in the Championship and over 90 league games but "he's never done it at this level"?
We should, if we can, upgrade on Doc but the same can be said for every player in the side. You could argue he dropped down a level for a reason but to pretend he never did it is just nonsense.
Shall I now make a list of all the Charlton players that were awful but played a number of championship games?
When I say he didn't do it, I mean he didn't thrive in this league. If he did, he would have been kept by Hull. He couldn't even stand out in League1 if we are being honest.
We need better to progress, harsh but true.
More nonsense. You've gone from "never done it" to "didn't thrive"
He was kept by Hull, for three seasons, and then like most players at one time or another he moved on to be the captain of a promotion winning team in league one but that isn't enough somehow.
We do need better players to progress but that is no reason to dismiss the contributions that Doc and many others have made.
I just don't get this whole either/or justification. Someone can like both Chinese and Indian food. You don't have to run down one to like the other.
We can praise a player AND want better replacements
We don't have to write off a player, and in this case our captain who did contribute greatly, just to justify bringing in someone better, younger, fitter, more suited.
Ok. I believe a player isn't good, you believe otherwise.
I believe he was a passenger in the championship, you believe he was championship quality.
Moving on.
And your evidence for him being a "passenger" is?
Again, why make stuff up just to justify replacing him.
I'm not making anything up, it's a fucking opinion. Jesus Christ. I don't think he's very good. I am basing this off of watching every game this season, and seeing him fail to control a game.
24/25: League 1, 40 apps, 4 goals 2 assists. 23/24: 15 Champ apps, bit part player 22/23: 1940 minutes of Champ football 21/22: 40 champ apps, 1 goal, 2842 mins, 71 mins average per game 20/21: Very good league 1 numbers, 5 goals, 5 assist, 44 appearances 19/20: Scottish prem, 6 apps, bit part player 18/19: League 1, 7 goals, 8 assists, good season
The common theme is, he does decent/good in league1, and struggles to make the step up. I saw plenty of Hull fans say it was the right move to let him go. Similar to how plenty of our fans will tell another club Chuks and Tennai will do a job.
I didn't watch him all those last 6 years, so I can only go from what I've read, and then watched with my own eyes, which is that he wasn't great in league1 for us, so I am doubtful he will make the step up, as he has previous history of failing.
Is this satisfactory and no longer making stuff up?
Out of interest, what makes you think he struggled to make the step up? He played 90 games in 3 seasons for Hull.
For me if he struggled to make the step up, then he'd have been found out in year one and made probably 20 appearances before being loaned out. But he wasn't.
I don't anymore, I was wrong.
After reading Grapevines short novel I had a reflection period.
Turns out all his minutes and apps I found were false and I was indeed making it up. Even though it says online he played 5092 minutes out of a potential 12,420 (not including injuries) those sites must all be wrong.
I also checked out Hull Citys message board to get a better view cause even though I have been repeatedly told on here, he is a Championship regular, all the information available says otherwise.
Turns out a lot of Hull fans were sad to see him go because he tried hard and was good to have around the dressing room.
Like this:
I also notice how you put 5092 out of 12420 minutes, counting across the entire of three seasons. Instead of breaking it down by season and showing the progress of how he became less influential as they climbed the league season upon season.
Isn’t this a trajectory you would want Charlton to mirror?
Season 1: 2842 mins (68% of available) - 19th
Season 2: 1950 mins (47% of available) - 15th
Season 3: 334 mins (8% of available) - 7th, released after the season
This is how realistic, sensible squad building is supposed to work. We won’t rip and replace key players all at once.

If we stay up yes. The issue is, Hull had better players/midfielders available on top of Doc.
So now we have gone full circle, and back to my original point.
I don't want words put in my mouth anyway, I think he's class.
When Hull finished 7th, Doc played 15 times, not sure how many starts. Him and Berry are two of our highest paid players, but despite playing in a five man midfield we have barely dominated any side including bottom half of table.
The Championship has changed; pace is the key all over the park, and neither has any. No surprise that KA replaces either to see games out. If both start many matches we are in trouble
I am a bit confused by this players lined up in April thing. Wouldn't that have been at a time before Phil Chapple returned and we knew what division we would be in? If circumstances have changed my guess is the plan about the mystery potential signings might be different now. We will never know though.

As soon as the August window closes, Chapple will be looking at the January window and on and on.
Bringing Chapple in to replace Scott is a long term commitment

Jones has said the targets were the same whatever division we found ourselves in. I don’t totally buy that but I can easily see four players that fit that bill. Jones also said it would be easier to get the targets to sign in The Championship.

As with lots of these things in football Chapple will have known he was coming to us a while ago and would have been working on things on the sly
Midfielders Hakeem Odoffin (Rotherham) Sonny Carey (Blackpool) Jacob Sorensen (Norwich)
John Swift (West Brom)
Winger/Striker Grady Diagana (West Brom) Ricky Jade Jones (Peterborough) Aaron Connolly (Millwall)
Striker Mustaphu Bundu (Plymouth) Emil Riis (Preston)
Be happy with signing any of these free agents could definitely do a job if not in the starting XI then a bit more quality as squad players if the circumstances are right
Valentin just signed for Preston, who want 8 signings.
Nobody is talking about ripping up the team or dumping players, we're talking about improving the side. And you do that by bringing in new and better players, who will take the place of existing first team players, or at least significantly reduce their minutes. If we can't improve on the existing players, then why are we signing anyone?
Our best 11 from last season, Mannion, Edwards, Gillesphey, Jones, Ramsay, Small, Coventry, Docherty, Berry, Campbell, Godden won't keep us up in the Championship.

Every club will have lists of players that they think will improve their squad, with estimates of the cost, and for all positions. If any of them become available we will be interested.
For a Club aiming for promotion from league 1 or staying in the Championship those lists would be very similar. The likelihood of signing would be the biggest variable.
The fact that Jones said he had players lined up would suggest that he has agreed targets and budget in principle, and now we are in the Championship he hopes to sign those higher on the list as a) we are in a higher league, and b) we have a larger budget.
Phil Chapel’s arrival has probably resulted in a few more added to that list who may have demoted some of the originals, be similar standard at a better price, or be available.
These lists are living documents and will be updated throughout the season as a matter of course. Probably daily at the moment.
Now Phil is back they will be better researched, with better detail and no doubt cover many more leagues. Plus of course the added value of his opinion.

How many players did we bring in after Bowyer's Wembley triumph ? and yes I know we went down but we also lost Aribo and Dijksteel and lost Gallagher at Christmas. I can remember Tom Lockyer an Bonne coming in but little else. If Gallagher had stayed and Taylor hadn't pulled his stroke we may have stayed up, maybe.

About 9 permanents plus 5 loans, and Williams deciding to stay after his contract expired.
Eight championship clubs reportedly in for Charlie Kelman hopefully we are one of them.
Kelman very much reminds me of May. Doubt Jones will be keen. Although they were both feeding off scraps in the final, the work rate of Godden was far superior to Kelman imo.
Rumour: ‘Plymouth Argyle are to battle Bolton Wanderers, Peterborough United and Charlton Athletic to the signing of Hertha Berlin midfielder Bradley Ibrahim’
Don’t know if this has already been posted was on a Plymouth site.

That’s ruined that one. Thanks Huddersfield, thanks a lot. I hope you’re all happy because I’m telling mum.
