Good, well-managed sides find a way to win ugly at the business end of a season. Neither this nor the win at Cambridge will be remembered for anything more than their contribution to the points total, but their importance towards that remains considerable.
As much as we would love the comfort of the Huddersfield win, we’re going to have to keep grinding. I will take result over performance at this point in the season. We are not quite clicking in the best way we have, but we find a way. Midfield felt a bit laboured, but I think that was by design of the Northampton press. People know you can’t let us play or we will hurt them.
McIntyre error for the penalty was shocking. Errors like that in a playoff game could blow our season. He just can’t be relied on right now, and we missed Gillesphey. I suspect NJ is trying to manage some minutes, but we suffer whenever any of our best XI come out. Wycombe and Wrexham are huge games are we need to keep going as hard as we can while 2nd could still mathematically happen.
Games like this galvanise my feeling that we can play whatever way we need and get results. No-one will want to face us at the moment. Wherever we end up, I’m just feeling like it ends with promotion - automatically feels very dependent on two other teams throwing, but this team is fully capable of beating any team in the playoffs, regardless of being home or away first.
Intrigued to see how we do in these next two games.
Hard fought win. I don’t understand how Mitchell is not getting the nod over McIntyre. AM gets the blocks and headers in and is an old school defender which you need sometimes. I am sure NJ could give me a logical explanation; however,I would be too afraid to ask!
Northampton are keen on keeping hold of Terry Taylor. Northampton fans credit him with helping turn their season round (alongside Nolan).
Northampton supporters will be hoping Charlton get through play offs & get promoted - as they think it will improve chances of keeping hold of Terry Taylor.

I get the feeling that NJ values athleticism and pace over the physicality that Mitchell brings. Mitchell has looked like he can’t play at the intensity that NJ wants and is also not as comfortable on the ball. He looked rusty the last time he played and would likely struggle against any kind of pace.

Might be other reasons, but that’s my assessment.
I think the reasons you gave may well be valid; however,I am not sure McIntyre is up to the task either. Let’s hope he proves me wrong.

McIntyre isn’t as good as Gillesphey on the ball, so we struggled to play out when Northampton were pressing us yesterday and ended up having to bring Aneke on and go long. If you put Mitchell there it would be even worse, he just isn’t good enough with the ball at his feet and playing him on the left should never be considered
NJ writing his own narrative here. Back in the summer I don't think anyone was questioning the signing of Godden. What a lot of people were questioning was the sale of Alfie May.
But of course NJ wont mention that.
I think plenty of people questioned replacing “golden boot” Alfie with an ageing Godden.
I had no idea Tariq Fosu played for them until he was substituted. He was an excellent player for us not that long ago yet doesn’t seem to register any form of hate / like association when our paths crossed. It’s like he never played for us
I liked him when he was with us, partly because my mates son trained him in the close seasons and when he was without a club. Had a tough time since leaving us. Was part of Brentfords promotion push but never got a look in in the Prem. Took a while getting a contract before Northampton signed him.
Only Aneke left from his time at the Valley and they both had a hug and chat at full time which was nice to see.
The football was pretty pony but really don't care again at this point. Keep winning games. Was in an exec box in the west stand and got to meet man of the match Lloyd Jones after the game. Top bloke.
Lloyd Jones proved how important he is to the defence. Jones was authoritative & excellent in the heart of defence.
Gillisephy similarly was missed at the heart of defence & proved how important he is.
With both Jones & Gillesphy fit, Charlton’s defence is rock solid with Jones & Gillesphy. I feel confident with the defence in the play offs with Jones & Gillesphy in the starting line up.

I remember him with fondness, especially his hat trick at Fleetwood. Problem i m o is, he is far too laid back, doesn't always seem to 'want it' enough
Best bit the ref did was at the end of the match after the melee and time wasted on that he hardly added on anything and blew up really quick .
I thought the same, he should have added at least 90 seconds after that, couldn't believe it when he whistled. And more than five minutes should have gone up in the first place! In the second half a number of very-slowly-walking-off subs from both teams, one from each team booked for time-wasting, a number of 'injuries' needed dealing with. Oh well!
It was great to see the Covered End full. Atmosphere from the crowd was very good when the crowd got going. Noise when Goddard scored the winner was excellent.
Having the backing from a fired up and packed Valley, could really make the difference going into the play off games. This will be a real advantage if the second leg is at home in the Valley.
Charlton are finding a way this season. I back Charlton first 11 as a match for any in this division.

That was what Kevin Nolan (their manager, not our recently departed scribe) said recently. He was dropped from the side as he didnt look bothered in training.
Another hard fought win. Didn't play well & although play offs are now secured I'm not sure we will be going into them as an "in form" team. Yes, we might not have lost recently but we're not playing with any type of swagger & last 2 games have been holding on to a single goal lead going into injury time.
Yes, call me a negative Nancy (I'm really not - just a realist) but it would be nice to win by more than a single goal & look comfortable with 10 mins to go.
Looking at other teams recent results I think we'll lose on Monday & Wycombe are now in the box seats for 2nd. Wrexham are now starting to bottle it & can see us winning up there.
Cant see is getting 2nd, especially as our GD is much worse than the other 3 teams around us who can grab it. Only way that will change is if we beat Wycombe & Wrexham by 3 or 4 clear goals, which ain't going to happen.
You are a lunatic. We have:
4 wins in 5. 9 wins in 12 1 defeat in 12. 2 defeats in 19. 56 points from our last 25 games, which averaged over a full season is 103 points.
But yeah, we're not an "in form" team.
Maybe "in form" wasn't the right word but currently I'd say if we played Stockport in the play offs we'd lose both games.
We are only just managing to beat the poor teams at the wrong end of the table. If we beat Burton 4-0 like we beat Rochdale at the end of the 18/19 season then I'll eat humble pie.
Only you could moan that when we win games, we're not winning them by enough.
At this point in the season, most teams including the poor ones are fighting for something, so it's rare to see absolute hammerings. There were only 3 games in the entire football league yesterday where a team won by more than 2 goals, and none of them were in league one.

Fosu left us in the summer that Aneke first joined in 2019.
Wait what is this... The long range guns are firing off the coast of Hastings? - There is to be no Easter resurrection for Northampton... and I may have missed this one, but still...
Northampton you've been SUNK!!
Not like you to miss a game FA, I hope everything is OK
That was a tough watch. comments on ref made on players marks thread Referee: 0.5 terrible ref the handbags at the end was entirely predictable as he was letting their no 18 tell him what to do. Not sure any of our yellows were deserved. No complaints on the penalty but he consistently gave us nothing and allowed Northampton to foul our players while stopping play for when we did it back (and getting his cards out).
I think the ref was probably worth 3 really but with people giving him 6 or 7 I compensated. Berry was great yesterday, I think he really enjoys these sort of scrappy games.
And we got to go to a very crowded River Ale House after (and probably stayed too long).

Tbf Mcintyre was superb against Cambridge, whilst I cant remember the last good match Mitchell had, like Mcintyre he has a big mistake in him
Five and 3/4 year old Lyle: That was great fun Dad and I loved it when the crowd were singing and seemed happy when Charlton scored goals but why did the old people start moaning during large parts of that match ?
35 year old Dad: Boy, you need to know the facts of Charlton Life. Many of the moaners are sad because they remember when Charlton were a Premier side and used to beat Chelsea, West ham, Spurs and even Arsenal and Liverpool. They judge all our players against the stars we had in the past in the Premier. Plus just like Grandad, many have sad lives as when he was watching Charlton and getting drunk at Carlisle, Nana ran off with a young Artist !
Lyle: Are Charlton failures for being in League 1 and why did you call McIntyre a Cockwomble ?
Dad: They get paid to play football so they are not failures but McIntyre thought he was a keeper and gave away the penalty and don't tell Mummy that I said Cockwomble.
Lyle: Our secret dad. Big Mac and fries on the way home ?
Is that 3 assists as of late for Chuks? It's clear his legs are absolutely gone (Neville away at WBA 2010 standards) but you can't help but love it when he contributes. If I was to want any player to grab us a 90th minute winner at Wembley again it would be him.
Thought N J interview about Godden/May and Dobbo was uncalled for when he picks McIntyre who is a liability he doesn’t always get it right
Anyway nice win and Monday is huge
He wears his heart on his sleeve.
He was getting absolute pelters during the poor run. There were many who said he had let the wrong players leave and replaced them with inferior ones - they will know who they are.
He was criticised back during the summer window.
I would be tempted to say what he said. I might not have been so diplomatic!

Sorry, but that's a cop out of an excuse. He's a grown man and a professional of many years standing now.
