Every Sunday league final I've been to (as a supporter) that ended in penalties, I've come out on the winning side. Remember a coach trip to Carshalton FC with the Horse and Groom years ago and a couple to Croydon Athletic, I think one was with the old Cons / Liberal Club. @DA9 or @ROTW should be able to confirm who and where. Great days on and off the pitch and in the pub after.
Is NJ the type of manager to substitute his keeper in the 29th minute of extra time if he feels the one on the bench is stronger at saving penalties? I wouldn't put it past him.
1. Penalty shoot out before the game. 2. Play 90 minutes. 3. If the scores are level, the team that won the pre kick off shoot out is awarded one goal. 4. 30 minutes extra time, with goals counting double.
This way, the game is either decided in the ninety minutes, or in extra time: goals scored on the pitch, within time decide the result, not a post-match shoot out.
Like that, but with the shootout after 90 minutes and the team that wins the shootout will win the match if its still level at 120 minutes.
I like a mix of both ideas - you only bring in the shootout if it’s still level after 90 minutes.
Say it’s 0-0 and Team A wins the shootout - they’d go into extra time with a 1-0 lead. Goals in extra time would count double, ensuring that one team is ahead by the end of 120 minutes. That way, it feels as though the match has been settled by 30 minutes of football, not by a coin flip shootout after 120 minutes has been played.
I know it's a bit of a dirty word but ultimately we watch sport as entertainment and the drama of penalties is very entertaining. I will always watch a penalty shoot out if I can, even if I haven't seen the match before it because they're great drama

But if no or equal amount of goals are scored, then it totally has been decided by a coin flip shootout after 90 mins rather than 120 mins
you will just have one team defending and timewasting to protect their penalty goal
The other option I like is that rather than just a plain old penalty the player is given the ball just outside the box & he is allowed up to 5 touches before attempting to score. Adds a bit more skill to it & the keeper can choose to come off his line and narrow the angle or try to smother the ball. The "penalty" taker then has options whether to go round the keeper or take a shot.
Like a hockey shoot-out?
Allow multiple touches but put them on the clock and no rebounds allowed.
Its the penalty format they used to do in the MLS many moons ago (Golfie's suggestion)
I thought they were great, would love to see them trailed in a youth tournament. There's a debate that they're more skilful then a normal shoot-out.
5 V 5 corners could also be interesting, also more of a team tie-breaker than individual.
I doubt either could replace shoot outs though, which I'm not a fan of!

Sure but the counter argument is that it gives the shootout losers 30 mins to “right” the result of the shootout. If they can’t do that, then it’s been settled by them not being able to score within those 30 minutes.
Probably won’t ever happen but I’d like to say it trialled somewhere to see how players and fans reacted to it.

Edit - Pretty sure there was one up VCD n'all?
We won a cup final at VCD where I organised the coach from the liberal club, we didn't win on penalties though, very heavy session back in the lib club afterwards, still got some photos somewhere

I'll have to confess I loved every second of our shootout Vs Doncaster, one of the best experiences of my life, wasn't at the Sunderland shootout.
We were very lucky to witness a penalties win followed up with an injury time winner last time. More of the same drama please.
Or a nice 10 nil will do.

assuming all were on the pitch at the time
That team (despite having someone who would go onto to be an England international) was never gonna get promoted looking back
