  • For us to win tomorrow it hinges on our wide players … Campbell been way off the boil over the last 4/5 weeks needs to show up cause he can be our match winner and Small for all his good work , pace etc his final ball needs to be more consistent for the amount of good positions he finds himself in .. think the rest of the team are better then Orient …… 2-1 to the reds
  • Based on the last few pages of this thread it would be good to get a chant of ‘Seems like there’s two John Humphreys’ going.
  • If the nightmare scenario of defeat happens hope we are as respectful as Sunderland fans were when we turned them over in the play off finals .

Most of us would be, I’m sure.

There is , the ex player and the ex bookie (who may have been a director at one point, he deffo sat in the directors box but that may have been through sponsorship or lounge access) he seemed a nice fella to unless you caught him on a bad day in the grocers.
  • I still think it’s going to be frantic, rather than tight. Think Orient will go for it & try and outscore us. They looked decent when attacking & trying to get back into the game at Stockport. But vulnerable when sitting back. For a one off do or die match, reckon they’ll just try and go all out, as know they’ll struggle trying to battle it out against us.

I’m sticking with the odd goal in 5 to decide it!
  • I’m sure they will come out and try to catch us cold I hope we weather the first 10 minutes. We all know we can win this but so much depends on if our wide players turn up.
With VAR in action the best bet of the day imo is that there will be at least 1 penalty as league one defenders at corners don’t mix well with VAR lol I hope it goes our way to keep the bus rolling into the championship COYRS

Has the team been to Wembley yet, seem to recall seeing orient putting a clip up the last day or so where their team had gone to Wembley this week to look about

not much from us, this deliberate from Nathan
Another failure by the comms team to create a connection with the fans and build excitement for the day by filming the team at Wembley.
Have you watched the excellent 90-minute Charlton TV preview?
Yes, and it’s mostly good (if not a bit long). There are multiple ways to engage and build excitement and it really seems Charlton are not investing time and money on the day either (Leytons fan zone will look much better than ours, with decent investment made by their club).

Lots of great things being done by the Charlton community this week which could have been capitalised on to build the narrative and create a connection with minimal effort.
  • I've woken up today feeling nervous. It's all getting a bit too real for my liking, gonna be an absolute mess tomorrow!
  • All 4 of the people on 'Sporting Life' have predicted us to win.

One said we are going to make it a bad game. I couldn't give two hoots what the outsiders think, as long as we win promotion.

4 Muppets, "bad game" utter tosh, we will win and win good...🏆
  • I've had a bad feeling about the play offs for a while, although I can't bring myself to predict a loss. I think this will be a tougher game than Sunderland in 2019. Hope we turn up and make it another day to remember for all the right reasons.
  • Going to post something similar to this tomorrow (a guess who game on Charlton players) but I'm switching it up a bit.

If anyone wants to watch something Charlton related, I asked 11 different Charlton groups/individuals to help build an all-time Charlton fantasy XI, thoughts?

    https://youtu.be/6SB9ZG-RM9U?si=bmp5yXSVu1Iuz1bd
That bloke on Taylor is old enough to have seen Mendonca, Hunt, Bent, Di Canio.

Whatever you think of Parker, he’s number one in midfield. I can’t deal with the Song and Coquelin picks.

Probably could have done with asking some older fans too.
I see your point mate, but, this was 11 random groups, so I was always expecting random results.

I think the bloke who selected Taylor, may be a fairly new supporter as he said "my best experiences" not speaking on behalf of the club.

Coquelin and Song I got in suppose cause of what they did after their short loans at Charlton.

I'll ask some older folks next time, but there was a few there.

I've done my fantasy XI on a Charlton podcast before, based on a mix of what I've seen and heard, and here's what mine looked like:

    That team is horrible.

    Mark Fish instead of Rufus

    Kish instead of Kinsella

    Lookman instead  of Lee

    No Costa
    No Simonsen
    No Hales.

    I could go on.

Sir John Humphrey instead of Luke Young.
    Great player was Humphrey.

But he's the only Charlton player I've ever met that I didn't like.
    Tried to talk down to
me like he was a school teacher.
    Which is what he was.

    Thought he was a  prick
In fairness that's what he probably thought of me.

My experience of talking to John Humphrey was the polar opposite to you; from London Bridge to Charlton on the train which is a great setting for any cafc fan to engage and chat about his Charlton career and his post football career as a teacher.
    Nice guy.
  • Last time we played Orient, we pretty much bossed the game, and only went behind due to a wonder strike

Not saying that the same will happen again, but on that basis, to say we'll make it a bad game is potentially wide of the mark - I equally agree we may make it a bad game, as lose, and you lose everything... There are no second chances after tomorrow.

I saw John Humphrey at a grocery store in charlton a few years back. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical interference” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

    Wtf
Its a very weird copy / paste from the internet

Where did the "I met [Celebrity] in a grocery store" copypasta come from? : r/OutOfTheLoop

I agree about the last final where the Sunderland fans that were still around after we finally left the stadium were decent folk considering how gutted they were but interesting to hear Steve Brown say on the excellent Wembley preview from Wembley that in the Mendonca final Sunderland fans surrounded the coach and were banging and spitting before the game as the coach was near the stadium.
Also that final I travelled up with a dozen family members from the Victoria pub in Canterbury on the Charlton coach and one disgruntled Sunderland fan threw a bottle that cracked the back window of the coach. The driver made the decision not to stop and report it straight away and wait around for an hour or two to get back to Kent.

Considering how many Sunderland fans were at that final where they definitely had more fans, the vast majority were fine but gutted after the game.

The last meeting at Wembley, I didn't notice any Sunderland fans in our end unlike the game last century when they had hundreds all together in the Cafc end that the Charlton fans complained about that were sitting around them.

  • Sunderland fans were pretty rowdy in central London last night. There will have been a lot of broken glass to clear up.

Sunderland fans trying to gain home advantage by making London a tip : r/Championship
  • 11th time they’ve been Wembley not sure how many in recent years but they still bring monster numbers
imagine us trekking to Newcastle for a final for the 11th time … 20-25k prolly we’ve never travelled well that far 😉
  • Only thing I'm properly worried about this season is the build up is very much geared up for us to have egg on our faces. The preview show being at Wembley, all the messages from ex players being shared on social media, it's all great content if we go and win, but there's a small chance it makes us look like absolute idiots come 3pm Sunday
  • Had an utter shit start to the weekend and all this bollocks from YouTubers, tiknoncers, bloggers, journos and pundits who haven't seen a single league one game this season because they're too busy wanking over the prem and champions league from their home studio bedrooms, talking about us as if we're the football antichrist is pissing me off more than should.

Don't forget, for the majority of pundits and experts the Third Division consisted of Wrexham and Birmingham; they paid little to no attention to anyone else.

  • It’s well known Orient struggle with set pieces and they use WWE tactics to try and nullify them. With VAR they won’t be able to. This is key, corners, free kicks in and around the box are massive. TC and Small can cause havoc running at them from wide.

Sadly, I  don't think this is the case.
You only have to watch MOTD to see that VAR does nothing to prevent the All in Wrestling antics that are evident at every corner, as well as the holding, grappling and strangling that often goes on in open play.
Our players are well versed in the darker arts of the game, our defence particularly so. As you move up through the team, those same arts are more nuanced and creative, culminating in the Grand Manner that is Godden.
