Has any Lifer actually tried to nail a haddock to a stick then walk around with it?

Thanks to this extended summer we are having a Bar B Q this weekend.
Fish sourced, spare broom handle identified, nails and hammer ready.
Thought I might try it, if its not been done before, since Arthur Bryan's reputed antics.

(After searching for a pun) I will definately join you East Stand.
I am still not 100% convinced its do-able, I'm thinking some kind of wire assistance will be required.

It would be quite a sight if it gained momentum.
  • Can we get some inflatable toy haddock to chuck around the Covered End?

I remember Grimsby had a load of fish when it was all the craze!

Is available as a radio controlled toy.
Dont think it would survive being nailed to a (fish) stick.

In the series of early 1900's cartoons (there are more than a hundred of them incidentally from The Kentish Independent, the first appearing in 1908) Arthur has the string tied around where the tail meets the body............on a smoked Haddock that would be quite firm I should imagine. There are no heads on the fish having been removed and the fish gutted before smoking.

He also wore a straw boater and striped apron. I assume it would have been blue and white as those were the colours of fishmonger aprons, at least the ones I can remember from my youth, though in the newspaper cartoons it naturally showed as black and white.

Finally, Arthur had one of those splendid waxed handle bar moustaches that were popular at the time.

I seem to recall him being amply proportioned, but isn't that a bit sizeist?
  • Ah yes I remember those cartoons, but not the detail you kindly supply.
No tache and short of one boater, but have appropriate apron. Procuring a large smoked haddock may be more tricky....though I have a friend who supplies Salmon to The Queen who may be the man to ask.
Thanks for the fixing clue, too Soundas
  • sure eel fix something up for you.
  • Is this really the time and the plaice for this?
