David Button next seasons no.1?

Far to early to say whos a better keeper, but i feel just that little bit more confident when button comes to collect.0

This is a similar situation to when we had Elliott and Randolph albeit Button and Hamer are older and more experienced,I suspect one of them will not be content with being number two and will move on during next season. Both of them had loans where they played over a 100 league games,I think we are lucky to have two such competent youngish Keepers.I do not think it is an accident that SCP choose to spend some of his small budget on a decent alternate goalie much as I like Sullivan clearly he would not be a decent option in the CCC.
I know some Spurs fans and they confirm Button was highly rated at the Lane.Their Goalkeeping Coach Tony Parks tipped him to be a Premier League Goalie in the future. He represented England at four different levels so his pedigree is better than Hamer's and they are only a year apart in terms of age.
Unless he does something stupid I'd like to see Button complete the season in goal and then see who is better in pre season.

Hamer potentially is a much better keeper than Button .. the thing is he needs to calm down, stop shouting and concentrate more on his own game. He's still young and hopefully will learn from a spell on the sidelines0

I agree that he needs to mature and his concentration is his big thing to work on.Lincsaddick said:Hamer potentially is a much better keeper than Button .. the thing is he needs to calm down, stop shouting and concentrate more on his own game. I expect Hamer to win his place back eventually.0

I'm not sure that's the case, being a keeper is more than making spectacular saves, otherwise De Gea would be the best keeper in the world...Lincsaddick said:Hamer potentially is a much better keeper than Button .. the thing is he needs to calm down, stop shouting and concentrate more on his own game. De Gea has a massive amount of potential which is probably why Man U bought him. Fergie knows his keepers.0

I'm not sure Button is bonkers enough to be a top goalie. But I reckon Hamer is. And he may not have the shirt but he has the song.0

Ben hamer is our number 1, i think SCP is just showing that nobody is a guaranteed starter and giving David a chance to show his worth. This weekends game will probably be where we find out if he will be starting until the end of the season or Ben comes back in.
Could also be a test of mentality for Ben to see what happens with him being on the bench for a few games.
Might also be to stop the interest from premier clubs at the end of the season, that may of shown some during January (i heard Fulham came looking but you can't believe everything you hear)0 -

Barthez was a huge flop IMO made too many mistakes in high profile games.MuttleyCAFC said:

VDS he should've signed before Fulham did in 2001.0 -

Bit flappy at first bit grew on confidence and made some good saves. Thought his kicking was too up and under. There was a lovely moment late on when he "allowed" Lee to trip him up which resulted in a yellow card for Lee.
It looks like we have two competent Championship goalkeepers, it will be interesting to watch them progress next season.
I saw Button have a mixed game at Posh and was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt even after the second goal. At Hudds i felt Button was on great form. He commanded the area well and appeared to know when to come for the ball and when to leave it.
Drawing Lee in for the foul was a bit cheeky, but it wasted time and broke up play. Not sure if Powell has urged his keepers to waste time when in front, but Hamer did it so often last season and got booked for it on occasions, that it must be an agreed ploy.
I'm a big Hamer fan and would be happy for him to come back in, if Button loses form, but as others have said, it's now Button's shirt to lose. I thought Button was growing in confidence at Hudds and he will become a fans favourite if his performances continue in this way. A nice touch after the players were walking off, was when Button came over for a hug from a couple of fans. Proud family maybe?0 -
Hamer wastes time a bit too early in a game imo. Something for last 10 if you have to do it.0

I never thought the van der Saar signing would come off. I remember seeing him when we beat Fulham 3-1 at the valley. He was at fault for at least 2 of the goals, one of them passing the ball directly to JJ who cooly slotted it home. Remember that game since my dad won the sweepstake at the RoD for the first time in years cos of that result. But we went home saying "that van der Saar is a bit crap".I-SAW-POUSO-PLAY said:

Is it just me or does Button parry a lot of balls that come his direction, even with two hands.0

I've never seen what all the fuss about Hamer is, to be honest. I think he's a decent but not spectacular keeper who has spent his entire career in lower leagues. AFAIK he's never been involved with the England set up, never been the subject of a bid from a top flight club and whilst he is still young(ish) there are plenty of other younger keepers who have made the step up ahead of him, Butland being the latest example.
I have nothing against him but I just don't get all the hype and I'm perfectly happy that Button has been given a chance as it's important to have competition for all places.0 -
Thought Button was great, made some excellent saves. Still, wont judge till hes had 10-15 but on current showing on a similar level to Hamer0

By buying Button, Powell clearly signified that he wanted 2 competing keepers, rather than a clear 1st choice and a reserve (Sullivan). There's nothing in the records of Button and Hamer to indicate which one should be number 1, both are of a similar age, Hamer has played more games, but before this season Button had played more games in the Championship (with Doncaster and Barnsley last season) and has England youth caps.
As it's the Mirror I'm always dubious, but did Button really cost £500k with half paid up front?

I think 500 was the maximum if certain conditions were met (number of games etc) but I can't imagine we paid half of that up front straight away... I could be wrong, though.killerandflash said:By buying Button, Powell clearly signified that he wanted 2 competing keepers, rather than a clear 1st choice and a reserve (Sullivan). this is 'modern keeping', I cannot understand the logic of it, if there is a logic to itmendonca said:Is it just me or does Button parry a lot of balls that come his direction, even with two hands.

Well Hamer was forced out of the position by impatient fans looking for someone to blame. Hamer was one of our best players.
BUTTON HAS ALREADY COST US 4 POINTS. That second goal at Peterborough was laughable and both goals today were stoppable.
In CP we trust.

The 1st went through his legs.
The 2nd went through his hands :-(0 -
I do agree that Hamer is our clear no. 1. If Powell wanted to give him a kick up the Harris then it may not have done so - seeing another keeper struggle doesn't force you to raise your game.0
-
Amazing that Button has become this weeks scapegoat with Wilson and Haynes competing for first reserve.
Wilson almost scored but was challenged by a Millwall defender.
Haynes got no decent service.
Easter scored with Taylor and Morrison ball watching.
Where was the marking? Yet Taylor and Morrison seem to have had great games based on todays post match marks. (Te-he). Neither of them made an attempt to pick Easter up or get a block in. Just wish the Millwall central defenders were so generous.0 -
I'd have dropped Hamer, becuase he was making too many errors and needed a break - but it does amaze me that people can't see his potential. Button is too slow and imobile to be a top keeper, and whilst he had a good game last week, it is pretty clear to me who the better keeper is. Hamer has the potential to go much higher in the game - can't see how some others can't see that in all honesty.
Think it is time to put Hamer back in though. Button can't say he hasn't had a chance - but I agree with previous poster - cost us 2 points against Posh and another 2 today.0 -
Only on charlton life can you have a thread saying how great he is followed by another how shite he is 90 minutes later
He should have done better with the first goal, the second one was as good a free kick as you will see, similar to jacko's Sheffield goals last season.
To be honest I couldn't give a toss who is between the sticks against Bolton, it's the other end where we are failing at home0 -
Let's be honest just by saying someone was shit or woeful doesn't make them a scapegoat
Button was shit yesterday , both goals he should've done better
Taylor and Morrison should've done better
Wilson and jacko and pritch should've done better
Waggs fuller should've done better
Wiggins solly Harriet the only players who reached a 6.5 or 7
Powell couldn't motivate them for a home game 5 for him
Not scapegoat just fact0
