I think when he goes it will be the start of the end of an era for Man Utd. A bit like what happened to Liverpool after Shankley/Paisley.

After Matt Busby retired they took a long time to re-discover their mojo, it wasn't until Fergie himself arrived and he took a few years to get things going his way. With the interim managers lacking the killing spirit to get over-priced players to grind out performances.

I can't see that they'll make the same mistake this time - whoever replaces Fergie has been identified in advance and knows who he is and will be a strong manager and used to success.

    Jose Mourinho...

Fergie threatning to walk unless he's given funds? Said in his notes before chelsea that he had no plans to retire and thought the team was special and wanted to be a part of it.

If Ferguson is going, then the only appointment which would allow for Ferguson to go upstairs would be Mourinho given their understanding... it looks/feels right but what do we know?!

I think Mourinho is brilliant, but would probably prefer to go to a club with virtually unlimited transfer and wages budgets like Chelsea or Citeh. Man U are rich but with a large debt burden and it just may not give him the scope to do what he wants. Anyone following Fergie will be on a hiding to nothing and I can't see Jose taking the risk to his reputation without a very free hand in the transfer market.

I just cannot see why they'd want Moyes. No trophies, never wins a derby game, never wins away to a big club, how many world class players has he managed, how many european games, cup finals etc.

Baffling decision if they appoint him.

The UEFA FFP rules start kicking in soon - the days of clubs spending more on wages than their entire turnover are numbered.

Realistically there are only two/three jobs that Mourinho could take without being seen to take a backwards step Man U and Chelsea and maybe one or two of the larger Italian sides. For all his brilliance as a manager he has a habit of deliberately pissing off major rivals and that means that teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Barcelona and AC Milan etc will never employ him and he'd never fit in at Bayern Munich. So where does he go?

I've always had a suspicion that he'd end up at OT - Man U/Fergie were one of the few clubs and managers that he's never managed to slag off in public, he's usually been quite complimentary about them.

If these rumours are true it could be interesting, Moyes is rumoured to be the manager that Fergie wants, but he's never won anything and I wonder if he'll get the players to outperform as Fergie has done year in year out.

He's known to blow smoke to get his own way so i doubt it's true.
Not saying it's made up just saying that he's just ensuring he gets what he wants.

Agree that they must have someone in mind. If not Mourinho, someone from within? Who do they have there?

Only Man Utd and Arsenal pay their way and are FFP compliant (maybe Spurs?) Simply can't see Mourinho going to Arsenal given the spite he showed when at Chelsea... which makes him all the more qualified for Old Trafford. Mourinho wins trophies for fun everywhere he goes and Man Utd are already streets ahead in England if no longer the finished article for Europe...
Thinking about it Man Utd stroll to the league is the perfect exit for Ferguson given the age of certain contributors like Scholes and Giggs - can they be replaced AND keep the club together? Mourinho has regenerated much worse squads over the years in FOUR different leagues!

Man United are a publicly traded company, so they're gonna be very wary of stock prices. An appointment of someone like Moyes is a massive risk, which will lose them millions of pounds in terms of shares.

They need a replacement just as Big as Sir Alex in order to appease the shareholders, so can see it being someone like Mourinho/Klopp/Heynckes (if he doesn't retire)
  • United would want a Manager for the long haul and one that respects the Club and it's history. That rules out Mourinho, who is only interested in himself. Moyes would be favourite. Those that say he hasn't won anything are correct BUT SAF hadn't won too much before he started his United stint, and Moyes has never had a squa like United's to play with. Giggs and Scoles will be appointed assistants........next best after Moyes would be Ole Gunar.

Think over time Moyes would be a good choice ,mainly because he don't take no s**t and would uphold the Fergie traits.
But its time that is the problem and a club like they would need someone to hit the ground running which would probably come easier to a Mourinho type.

Can see Chris Houghton going there. Well respected and goes about his work similar to Fergie.

Er, before Fergie went to United he had created a superb team at Aberdeen that broke the Old Firm wide open and won.....

    Scottish Premier Division (3): 1979–80, 1983–84, 1984–85
    Scottish Cup (4): 1981–82, 1982–83, 1983–84, 1985–86
    Scottish League Cup (1): 1985–86
UEFA Cup Winners' Cup (1): 1982–83
    UEFA Super Cup (1): 1983

....not a bad record all things considered.

Well, on sunday it is utd's last home game and they get the trophy presentation. fergie will do a speech anyway so if it's true it'll be then. I actually would be very surprised if he did announce his retirement to be honest. if it is true, then i'm guessing there may be more to this "hip operation" than appears.

When Madrid beat Utd earlier this season Jose was very humble about it (not like him!) which gave a lot of people the feeling he was laying the groundwork to eventually step in... add to that the fact that he's probably headed over here next year and that Chesea are rumoured to be in for him, and it might just be that Fergie's doing what's best for Utd and stepping aside while Jose's available.

Wouldn't be at all shocked if Mourinho ends up there, but whoever takes the reigns it'll be fascinating to see how they do - they certainly will have to hit the ground running faster than Fergie did when he first turned up!

If they want Moyes to come in then he should spend one season working under Fergie as his assistant to know the ropes, anyone coming into the club cold after 25 years of Fergie running the joint has no chance.

no real surprise, he has become even more 'distant' and eccentric over the recent past. David Moyes is fancied to join the club as number 2 with Furrybum going to the board. United will have to ensure that there is not similar turmoil and disruption as caused when Matt Busby retired.

Before joining Man U he won:
Scottish First Division (1): 1976–77 - with St Mirren.
    Then at Aberdeen:

To be fair Rangers and Celtic although they have always dominated the Jockball league were not as dominant as they are now.

He also left Aberdeen at the right time - a year after he last won the SPL Rangers won it and they and Celtic have shared it ever since, comfortably outspending other teams.

Everton have outperformed ever since he's been there. I hope he gets it. He could do very well there.

Would Ferguson move upstairs in some sort of director role to help any potential new manager if this story is true or is it going a total break from the club?

Suppose Mourinho for example would want to be his own man but a Moyes might like Ferguson helping him?
