I'm afraid the long summer evenings are not the best time to spot it, as it relies on the reflection of the setting sun to highlight it in the sky. The darker evenings are better.
I've put some links on here to some sites in which you can put your own location, and it will tell you where to look and when. It moves a lot faster than a plane (obviously) and is very bright and unmistakable when you see it. It only last on average about 5 minutes.
If there's any radio hams out there, you will know you can track it 145.800 Mhz. and if you're really lucky you might hear the crew.

Go to Satellites/ISS.The next good sighting is on 21st July at 23.31 until 23.34 rising in the SSW to 63 degrees travelling East. It's not very visible at the moment from London.
One of these sites shows the onboard webcam, but can't remember which one. Great earth pictures as it goes round.
Another good site is this one, this is the one with the onboard webcam.
