Chris Eagles - Signed For Rest of Season (pg 12, wants to stay)

One bonus with Eagles, is that we have a rightfooted option on free kicks and corners.
I still think he has a bit to do to be offered a contract though.1 -
I don't get why signing Eagles would be an option to sign him instead of Bulot, JBG or Harriott or we can only have x number of them. Surely the budget is there that we can afford to keep all the players now so why not next season too?
If Any of the midfield leave in the summer then they need replacing.
So really the question comes down to simply sign him yes or no? And given what others have stated already like giving him a full pre-season, the experience he comes with, he wants to stay, more to come from him, it's a yes for me. I expect it's been a season to forget for him so will want to make amends next season and hopefully we will benefit from that.0 -
Sounds OK, but I have heard from a reliable source that signing Diarra, Eagles and Johnson took us over budget.MartinhoCAFC said:I don't get why signing Eagles would be an option to sign him instead of Bulot, JBG or Harriott or we can only have x number of them. Fair enough but if we've gone over budget I suspect we would more likely see some of the CB's leave rather than midfielders otherwise we end up back at square one light on cover in midfied if any of the current midfield aren't retained.East_Stand_Loopy said:

Maybe the budget will balance once a clearout's happened of all the dead wood (Onyewu, Wilson, Church in particular) plus any players currently out on loan may save a few quid on the budget or even bring money in if they are sold (Reza, PP, Nego, Tucudean, Piggott etc)0 -
I think that Katrien may have had to flutter her eyelashes at RD to get him to write some of the cheques!MartinhoCAFC said:

Signing Diarra, Eagles and Johnson may well have taken us over budget, but jettisoning Onyewu, Bikey, Parzyscek, Ghoochannejhad, Church, Harriott, Etheridge and Tucudean would help that out.
If we sold that lot, and used the money saved to buy Buyens, Bulot, Eagles, JBGs new contract and a couple of free agents, I wouldn't mind one bit.1 -
To sell something you need someone
stupid enoughto buy it
I suppose we could trick one of the "network" clubs in to making the same mistake as we did with some of the above mentioneddrossplayers2 -
Worked though as we didn't get relegatedEast_Stand_Loopy said:

I don't think a four or five year deal exists for anyone tbh. I would be happy for him to sign a two year contract. I think he has more to offer than just being a squad player. If he stays and gets a pre season under his belt I think he might have a lot to offer.3

Didnt Solly sign a four year deal last season?0

I would imagine that if anything the squad next season may end up being a little smaller than this current one - and perhaps a little older on average too, but with the benefit of greater experience and more known quantities over hot prospects and Next Big Things. Sadly I can see us cashing in one or two of the more sellable assets (JBG, Gomez, TWWW) over the course of the next few years to balance the books, but then again, 'twas ever the way.
Eagles I would keep if we can reach an agreement wage-wise. He and/or his agent though seem to value him quite highly though so if getting rid of Eagles meant keeping Bulot or JBG then it's goodbye Eagles for me.2 -
I think a lot of clubs will watch the outcome of the QPR situation should they be relegated and look closely at the financial spend of those who gain promotion this year, and see if the ffp is as shit as we all think0
-
Also she clarified that she has a wage budget and a target for incoming transfer fees. She didn't explain what the numbers were but I'm guessing that the transfer fees we raise from selling and loan fees cannot be used to pay wages, and nor should it.CyrilDavies said:

He's crashed down to earth with one almighty bump
I did rate him highly a few years back though0 -
I thought he done ok with us to be honest, hope he gets his career back on track0

I believe his RIDICULOUS wage demands are his downfall.
For someone with Charton fans amongst his immediate family he really did try to take the piss with us - and now he's knocking about in Coventry (albeit sleeping on a bed of money)0 -
Wasn't he on £30k a week or something like that with Bolton?Swisdom said:I believe his RIDICULOUS wage demands are his downfall.

It can be very hard to accept such a reduction in standard of living, and even £30k a week can, easily, all be spent if it is for a short period with the expectation that it will be for longer.
Sadly some people are encouraged to believe that they are worth more than, in actual fact, they are. By the time they realise the truth for themselves many opportunities have gone. I remember rumours of both Ben Thatcher and Michael Stewart leaving as we didn't offer them enough then coming back to accept the terms we'd offered but being told we'd moved on.
Despite the riches at the top of the game there are a lot of players who struggle based on how short the 'peak' of their career can be. I don't begrudge them asking for a lot of money, but it is their own 'fault' if they end up earning a lot less. I can see how he ended up on a short term contract with both us and Blackpool last season, and it is, also, no surprise that he didn't stay on with either club.1 -
