Overall we probably had less bad days than them, hence the 3-2, however I can't help thinking if there were another 8 tests it would be 7-6 either way. Not sure what it all means, there's been a lot to feel optimistic about but a lot of the old faults have surfaced from time to time. Pakistan in the UAE will be a very different, hope it's not as big a horror show as last time.

Apologies @suzisausage and Mr Sausage. The most rushed introduction of all time! My old man was going wandering to the pub and my mum would have killed me if I'd lost him at lunch! :)

Bizarrely, met a bloke in a Charlton top 30 seconds later. "You on Charlton Life fella?" Met with a completely blank expression. "What's that?".

Not the best minute of my life.

The way Harris bowled in the 2013 and 2013/14 series, his fitness could be a major factor in who wins the series, as England really struggled against him.

    KillerandFlash's post from July 2nd.
Think Harris's loss was a huge blow to Aus.
Yes, Harris could have made a big difference, someone with pace who can utilise English conditions

A strange day at the test, the rain started at 12, but it took 15 minutes before the umpires decided it was too heavy. Back on at 3 and a quick finish. The beer went down well, it was nice to see the presentations and lap of honour, and I'll get 50% back, but missing Usain Bolt and the Spa Grand Prix for that!

Always an emotional time when we pick up the Ashes on a Sunday at The Oval. Wonder what Oz side we'll see here in 4 ? years time? - When you think that its likely that the following wont be back then it could be a very different side...

Good to meet you @red_murph ! Was massively shocked when you came up to us and told us we were suzisausage and Les says! Hope you got back from the pub to see the end. We tried 3 packed pubs before we found the pilgrim for the first half of the football then got back in for the end and the celebrations .

Also saw a Charlton fan and son on the train at 9.15 from eltham and a Charlton fan in a Cafc cap with a blues brothers Elwood tshirt on. Not brave enough to ask strangers if they are on Charlton life!

Met up with Stewart who I'm not sure what his name is on here and his mate for drinks and then got a boat to Greenwich as we were feeling in a celebratory mood! Now hungover on the bus home and I just walked into a puddle :-(

Hopefully Nic will assure you I'm not a complete mentalist!

Can heartily recommend The White Bear if it rains. 6-7 mins walk, completely empty. Few games of Spoof, few pints. Back to see The Urn raised.

Always good to meet fellow Addicks. My head is also a bit 'thumpy'. Will say hello properly next time :)
  • I see BT Sport have won the rights to show the next ashes series down under. BT are really becoming serious competition to sky.

It'll be interesting to see how Cricket coverage works out for bt as sky sports cricket coverage is superb

Cricket has been Sky's golden egg for ten years now. BT are being incredibly aggressive going after this

Wonder if they'll just tag onto the Channel 9 ? commentary (hope not, don't want Ian Chappell, Ian Healy and all the other annoying Aussie commentators bleating away) - or if they'll build their own around say, Mark Nicholas.and the C5 team.?

Sky coverage of Cricket has been superb.
What the general opinion of BT's coverage of footy?

I think sky do a brilliant job of covering the cricket. If BT poach bumble, Atherton, hussein at Al they have won

If like you suggest they piggy back on channel 9 I'll not be as impressed

I think they do a good job of the football, it's different to Sky but sky I think make a mess and have far too much filler.

Wouldn't be surprised if Sky tie up their team for the home games and other away tours (no sign of BT going for Windies, India, SA away tours) and expect BT to go for Nicholas as anchorman and add Vaughan, Swan, Stewart and maybe Boycott. Also expect Bell to be retired by then so they may want him for added clichés.

Seems to me that 80m is a lot to pay for what will be limited interest apart from when we are over there.

Ffs I know I should welcome competition but BT are starting to pee me off.

I'd rather not be paying two subscriptions to be watching effectively what I was able to watch with one subscription before.

PL games, Champions League from this season and now Ashes cricket...

It's important to note that BT have signed a contract for ALL Australian cricket, which is good news for Aussie expats, as they'll see all the Australian home internationals for 5 years plus the big bash. I'm not sure how many people here will want to watch Australian Test matches against other countries, but then people watch international football, La Liga etc

I assume they'll use the Australian commentators, with Nicholas (who works out there anyway) plus a guest English commentator for the Ashes (like Sky, C5 and TMS have had Aussie commentators this series)

Why would they use Aussie commentators during the Ashes for a beamback to the UK? They are not broadcasting to a domestic audience, C9 do that. It will be English commentators for Ashes and for other countries they'll take C9 coverage with an anchor back here with a couple of ex-pros doing the graveyard shift a lá Colville, Buther, Key etc

Agreed that breaking the Sky monopoly hardly helps the consumer does it! £800+ a year now.

This, this and this. It really grates that they want £19.99 a month plus extra for HD plus then even more for it to be broadcast to a 2nd set-top box.

Oh yeah, its great if you've got virgin when its thrown in for free, or you take their line rental, phone line and their broadband but its yet more money going out every month.

(Yes, I do realise I can illegally stream through Kodi but I prefer to watch my sport in HD tbh!)

If you get your broadband from BT you can twist the knife on Sky for sensible price on the TV package. BT sport free to BT broadband customers
  • A few pictures from my day at The Oval yesterday. Obviously disappointing that we didn't get to see much cricket but it was a great day none the less. Got very drunk! There is something very special about a day at the cricket, especially an ashes test match!

  • England batsman Joe Root has been rested for the limited-overs series against Australia.

The 24-year-old, England's leading run-scorer during their 3-2 Ashes win, will miss the Twenty20 and five one-day internationals starting on 31 August.

Uncapped Essex left-arm pace bowler Reece Topley, 21, has been named in a 13-man T20 squad.

All-rounder Moeen Ali, rested for the ODIs against New Zealand this summer, has been recalled for both formats.

The one-day squad features five players - Moeen, Jos Buttler, Steven Finn, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood - who helped England win the Ashes.

Topley and batsman James Vince, who were in the squad for the last T20 international against New Zealand but did not play in the 56-run win at Old Trafford, retain their places.

Fit-again seamer Chris Woakes returns after injury.

Topley has taken 16 wickets at an average of 22.93 with an economy rate of 9.02 in 11 T20 Blast games for Essex this season, while Hampshire's Vince is the joint highest English run-scorer in the competition with 641.

There is no place in either squad for Jonny Bairstow.

He made a match-winning unbeaten 83 asEngland clinched a 3-2 win over New Zealand in June, their first one-day series since being knocked out of the World Cup in the group stages.

England T20 squad: Eoin Morgan (Middlesex, capt), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Sam Billings (Kent), Jos Buttler (Lancashire, wk), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), Ben Stokes (Durham), Reece Topley (Essex), James Vince (Hampshire), David Willey (Northamptonshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire).

England ODI squad: Eoin Morgan (Middlesex, capt), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Sam Billings (Kent), Jos Buttler (Lancashire, wk), Steven Finn (Middlesex), Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire), Liam Plunkett (Yorkshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Jason Roy (Surrey), Ben Stokes (Durham), James Taylor (Nottinghamshire), David Willey Northamptonshire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Mark Wood (Durham).
