With strangers, particularly at networking events, I do that that thing where you shake hands, lock thumbs, lock fingers, slide hands, fist bump, but then go for a high five, miss, lean forward, and shake each others ankles.

I once knew a guy who I didn't see often, but when I did, would give the most bone-crushing handshake I've ever encountered. It took me by painful surprised the first couple of times, but the third time I remembered and got in there early with as firm a handshake as I could manage. He looked at me, eyes wide, a sense of mild awe on his face and said "Good shake!"
I don't really have any friends, but some guys I work with go for the sort of genial pat on the arm thing?1 -
