Lookman...£3 million now or £10 million later?

  • Doesn't mean anything. Gomez signed a new deal as well let's not forget.

Depends what's in the contract. As we all know Gomez' had a clause that he could go if a certain fee was met.

Hopefully we have learnt the lesson of that and if a similar clause is inserted it is at a much higher figure.

I for one think it's great news as even the doomsayers on here would find it hard to suggest he'll sign a new four-year deal this afternoon and be gone by tonight...
  • It has already been mentioned that there will be a clause in his contract that if club bid a certain amount etc, etc, same as Gomez

I no longer expect us to keep any promising youth player if these tossers can farm em out for cash.

In the summer, there were worries that Cousins and JBG would be sold for cash, but both ended up signing longer deals.

So far, they have sold Gomez who went straight into the Liverpool first team and had a buy-out clause (I can't remember if Gomez's new contract was before or after RD bought the club) and didn't keep Poyet when his contract had been allowed to run out by Slater & Jimenez.

Honest question: how long should Lookman have to stay at the Valley for people to consider dropping the "farm them out for cash" line? If he is going to leave at some point (which he probably will), how long would be a reasonable return for Charlton?
  • 100 games

    Summer 2018 then?

But the contract has to be agreed with the player and the player's agent.

If the agent says that he'll refuse to let the player sign the contract unless the exit clause is halved, what do you do?

Negotiated by the agent - agreed by the player. If the player is happy and wants to sign then the agent can't stop him.

For the Belgians and network, not us

Exactly, the agent has the club by the short and curlies which is why there's a load of nonsense written on here about the club farming players out and cashing in when it's out of their hands

  • Charlton will wait, until they sign Foo Kool & then announce the Lookman deal just before 11pm.

  • I have said it before IT DOESNT MATTER, if hes signed a new contract it just means that our wage bill has temporarily increased. Roland will have sanctioned a new contract in the expectation of recouping this when he sells him on. The MONEY WILL GO TO THE NETWORK NOT CAFC. Charlton are just a sub branch in Rolands empire, financed from Head Office at the CEOs whim.

However In the short term we do have his talent for a few more games.
  • The thing about a buyout clause, it doesn't prevent a bidding war if handled right. The club sold Gomes suddenly, at the START of the window, without announcing go the world that he was for sale.

A buyout clause will prevent a bidding war.

If a player has got a buyout of 5 million, this will be known to interested clubs due to the agent.

Therefore no-one will bid over 5 million, it would be pointless as any club meeting the buy out clause would be able to offer a contract.
  • Keep it simple, We should offer an improved salary 4 year contract with a £10 million buy out clause, if Ade does the business in our first team premiership clubs won't mind paying it.
