Johnson is a professional footballer. Both of those adjectives are important. As far as "footballer" is concerned, his job was to marshal the defensive troops to ensure Charlton kept a clean sheet. He can't be blamed for the lack of goals scored by his team. But he's totally culpable for the ineffective defensive performance. We lost. Had his footballing performance been "not too bad", we would have secured a clean sheet and, at least, a point. As it is, the defence - his sole reason for being there - was compromised to the tune of two goals. So, even had we scored once, we would still have lost. If this can be regarded as "not too bad", then we might as well accept relegation immediately and start to work towards recruiting a team that can hold its own in League 2 next season. You might think that's appropriate; I don't. So, with regards to your comment "not too bad" in terms of his footballing performance, you're wrong. Very, very wrong.
But, as well as being a footballer, he's a "professional". He owes a duty to his employers for his levels of skill, fitness and commitment; for his ethos, attitude and countenance; and for his ability to understand his roles and for displaying that understanding. In other words, as a professional employee of a business in the entertainment industry which owes its income (albeit apparently only one-third) to fee-paying spectators, he needs to show he can empathise with fans who pay (at least in part) his wages. And he needs to ensure his execution of duties leads to likely more, not fewer, supporters in future. He was woefully short of demonstrating anything like the levels of professionalism that would be appropriate. So, with regards to your comment "not too bad" in terms of his professionalism, you are off your fucking head, mate.
Hopefully you saw what I did there? I swore appropriately - you are, after all, off your fucking head - and without compromising my professionalism on CL, as I am not paid for my views here. Johnson is a professional footballer, so he needs to act accordingly. His performance can't be regarded as "not too bad", unless you append more words to it, such as "his performance was not too bad, it was fucking awful".6 -

Good grief I have stood in clubhouses where I have been given any amount of abuse, some good natured, some unreasonable and on occasion some down right nasty.
Whilst I might personally wish to respond to such insults I was a representative of the club and therefore all the people involved with that club. No matter the provocation you have a broader responsibility than just yourself. If a player does not get that after over decade in the game then clearly he could not give a s**t about the people he represents.
In which case as a senior player you need him nowhere near your squad.
It was unprofessional act at every level and poorly reflects on the manager, coaches, the other players and the club at a time Slade is trying to build a "charm offensive" in building a relationship with supporters.

in my opinion, the team did try hard enough .. the facts (as I see tem) are: that the team was inferior on the day to the Bury team, I think that the team was badly selected and we were overpowered by a more prepared and settled outfit .. I just do not agree that the CAFC players who turned out last Saturday didn't try, care or give a toss .. they did have a go and they lost .. and as has been said on here by a few, including me, if fans can give dogs abuse to the players, then they should be able to take a bit back .. f f s I can understand a few children possibly being upset by bad language, but grown men and women at a football match ?? .. do me a favour ..
However what has struck a chord with me isn't the generalisation of 'dogs abuse' going one way and t'other, it is what was actually said. The words and sentiment behind them.

Pretty specific. Not part of a tit for tat exchange 'you're a dick', 'you're a bigger dick', which might be interpreted as the rough and tumble exchange of pugnacious banter, not that at all.
Have you considered what this means, and do you think in any context that is the right sentiment a player should express to fans?

Gary Sprake watched a long range shot whistle just over the bar without moving at all to cover it, though he must have seen it from a long way out ..
I was behind that goal at the uncovered end .. Jack C grabbed Sprake by the scruff and gave him the biggest volley of abuse I had ever heard one teammate, indeed one person in any circumstance, give another ..
13/14 years of age and my first real lesson in how to REALLY efff at, blind, curse and insult someone .. I bet Sprake never made the same mistake again ..
