It also depends on your action and build and also whether all the moving parts are going forward. For example, Darren Gough was under 5' 11" and David Griffiths, who was only 5' 9" was capable of bowling at up to 93-94mph. Mind you, I can't help thinking that in Griffiths case, given the amount of time he was out injured, that he had a body that wasn't designed to bowl that fast!Riviera said:I think Curran showed real guts and a good temperament, he doesn't have the bowling skills though (at the moment at least) to be effective at the top level. Brett Lee did a very good analysis of him on BT Sport. He says he needs to sort out his delivery stride to get more height at the point of delivery. He's not particularly tall, < 6ft I'd guess. Lee reckons he could bowl faster with some modifications.

How tall was Malcolm Marshall?Addick Addict said:

Agree with you that height isn't necessarily a pre-requisite to be a fast bowler though is does obviously help0 -
Just checked and the great man was in fact 5' 11' - same as Goughy0
-
Harold Larwood was 5' 7" apparently0
-
Dale Steyn is 5ft 100
-
Shoaib wasn't tall either0
-
That's Sam Curran, imo, the better of the 2 Currans but a couple of years younger. Whippy left armer, a sort of left-arm Malcolm Marshall (although obviously not quite at Malcolms level yet !) Can bat too - generally coming in higher than his brother at Surrey circa no 7.golfaddick said:On the Sky review programme they were talking about his brother - a left armer I believe. Not quick but gives something different to all the right armers we currently have.
thoughts ?
Will be a good foil for the Right arm bowlers, maybe if Crane gets up to speed then we could have 2 all-rounders in Stokes and Curran with Jimmy,Broad and Crane as other 3 bowlers, with Moeen discarded.0 -
Jeff Thomson wasn't especially tall either0
-
Exactly! Lee said with a change to his action he thought he could bowl faster!Addick Addict said:

Please AA don't talk to me about fast bowling when at my peak I was only 5' 9.75"
Craig White is considered by many to be the fastest English (qualified) for a couple of seasons on the 90's and he was average height and wiry.
Height helps with bounce and lift off a length but pure speed comes from strength and the shoulder.0 -
White wasn't wiry IMO. Solidly built with broad shoulders hence his ability to bowl at 90mph plus despite being average heightRiviera said:

Chris Woakes definitely got faster between his first England call up and his recall in 2016(?).
Craig Overton is another bowler who surely ought to be faster when you look at his physique, but then tall bowlers aren't always fast, Windies Captain Jason Holder is military medium and 6 ft 7!0 -

And I used to play with a lad called Simon Fowler in the 80's. He was at least 6'5", long blonde hair and looked really mean; like cricket's Thor. He had a long run up and then delivered powder puff dollys! He was so frustrating, but scared the wits out of the oppo for one ball!3 -
Isnt Overtons brother the 'quick' in his family?killerandflash said:Chris Woakes definitely got faster between his first England call up and his recall in 2016(?).

Roy Gilchrist was a quick-tempered and fearsome West Indian fast bowler of his day. He was only 5'8" and known for bowling the occasional beamer. He played quite a bit of league cricket.Addick Addict said:

Yes - Jamie is a 90mph bowler but is - surprise - injured.The_President said:

Have to say that this pace thing is massively overdone at the minute, look at two of the best fast bowlers of all-time, McGrath and Hadlee, neither bowled over 140kmh, normally bowled at 135kmh.0 -
Had to look up Thommo's height. 6'1" so not a giant by any means0
-
Remains to be seen on both accounts. Temperament looks good. Stepped up well to the big stage in some key t20 games at a very young age. But has been rather underwhelming at our lords final losses. Thibk he has the right mentality.The_President said:Do you think Sam Curran has both Canters?
Skills/technique. Sign a are good but right now he is more potential than quality. Particularly in the 4 day stuff. The Surrey management thibk he will turn into a proper all rounder and will bat as high as 4 or 5. Where as right now he is a bowler who bats 7.
Need a to be given time to develop properly but the signs are all there.0 -
And Ambrose, however, what they did have was incredible accuracy. They used to say you could put an A4 piece of paper on the pitch just outside off-stump and Ambrose and Mcgrath would hit it 5 times out of 6.Ormiston Addick said:

Joel garner wasn't particularly fast either, just unhittable due to his height and accuracy. Skill overcomes sheer pace... Brett Lee won't go down as a great.The_President said:

I regularly see Thommo around where I live in Brisbane, he is regular height but his shoulders are absolutely massive.McBobbin said:Had to look up Thommo's height. 6'1" so not a giant by any means

I remember an ODI at Lords in 1995 when England played West Indies and the opening spell from Ambrose to Atherton was incredible - basically unplayable.The_President said:

Atherton went on to score 127 but for the first hour could not get a bat on Ambrose as he took the ball away down the slope with every ball bouncing sharply at about shoulder height.
I remember watching it live and thinking, "How the fuck is anyone supposed to play this?"0 -
I met Graham Napier once... Shorter than me (I'm 5'11") and could bowl 90mph. Ok... He isn't exactly Imran khan but bowling that fast isn't easy. He looks like a wardrobe that's been pushed onto its side. Pure strengthOrmiston Addick said:

Napier was a very frustrating player, gad a lot of potential but only really got his game together in his 30s.McBobbin said:

Very injury prone in addition. He had a world record at one point, for T20. Did the same in a county game and just missed out on a double ton. Love the guy, achieved a lot, but definitely could have achieved a lot moreOrmiston Addick said:

According to The Cricket Paper. England's current bowling coach, Chris Silverwood, has been lined up to take over from Bayliss when he leaves next year.0

Brilliant! His track record in Test cricket is so much better than Bayliss'....Addick Addict said:According to The Cricket Paper. England's current bowling coach, Chris Silverwood, has been lined up to take over from Bayliss when he leaves next year.
