1982 was my first England WC

    Seaman

    Neville Butcher Ferdinand Cole

    Beckham Gazza Robson Waddle

    Sheringham Lineker

I've gone for Sheringham as I think he'd work better with Lineker than Shearer would.

I'll have Pope and Gomez. But Defoe doesn't qualify.

    Neville, Ferdinand, Adams, Cole

    Mcmanaman, Ince, Scholes, Gazza

    Shearer, Owen

I've picked McManaman on euro 96 form, which I suppose isn't what was asked for

  • I can remember the 1982 WC quite clearly, since I was nine years of age and already mad on football.

This is based on ability and character, and not necessarily their own performance's in the WC.

    Shilton

    Neville Ferdinand Butcher Pearce

    Robson

    Gascoigne Hoddle

    Scholes

Few sentimental picks on there, and a week or so ago I probably wouldn't have had Glen Hoddle in the team.

However I was watching some old games the other day, and realised that I had forgotten what a great player he was.
  • Why are people putting in Gerrard? He was average for England. Lampard was a better England player, Euro 2004 alone.
  • Gerrard was unbelievable for Liverpool, but like you say he was very poor for England - in fact I can't recall him having a good game.

Never really forgave him for his continual whingeing about being played wide left and wide right etc, totally ignoring the fact that a number of great players of his generation (Zidane, Nedved. Iniesta) all basically played from wide midfield areas - but didn't necessarily stay there.

Kind if epitomised the English footballers mentality of that era.

  • First World Cup 1962.
    My team:

    Banks
    Cohen
    Charlton J
    Moore
    Wilson
    Ball
    Styles
    Peters
    Charlton R
    Hurst
    Hunt

    Banks
    G.Neville Ferdinand Moore Cooper
    Scholes Gazza Hudson B Charlton
    Shearer Greaves

(Hudson should of had 80 caps for England but Revie who hated Chelsea players dropped Alan Hudson after he was MOM against Germany)

Gerrard was never good enough even at club level to play in the middle in a 4-4-2 that was the problem.
  • 1954 first world cup for me.
    Banks
    Cohen
    Moore
    Ferdinand
    Sansom
    Scholes
    Stiles
    Charlton
    Gascoigne
    Finney
    Hurst
  • '66 for me so let's start with that team and see if we can improve it, playing 4-4-2

    Banks
    Cohen
    Moore
    Charlton J - Ferdinand
    Wilson - Pearce
    Ball - Gasgoine
    Stiles
    Charlton R
    Peters
    Hurst - Greaves
    Hunt - Shearer

I'd like Scholes instead of Stiles and probably Rooney instead of Hurst but I don't think the team midfield is balanced and I'm not convinced Shearer and Rooney would work together.

This thread is all about opinion.

Like you, being the vintage I am, I too would start with the 1966 team.

However in my view I don't know how the only man to score a hat-trick in a World Cup Final can be dropped from a 'best ever seen' side.

  • Couldn't bring myself to pick Lampard or Gerrad as they did absolute f*ck all for England when it mattered.

You don't think Lampard scoring the goal that VAR would have given its blessing to, to make it 2-2 and England could have then parked 2 buses and taken the game to extra time and we would've won on penalities against Germany.
Surely that scenario would've occured and Lampard and Gerrard would also have scored in shootout.
Heroes, the both of them in a parallel universe.

It's an interesting one, trying to improve on 66. Ferdinand is a better player than Jackie. But the combination of Moore and Jack worked as they had different attributes.

I hadn't realised that Roger Hunt was easily our top scorer after the group stage with 3 goals, but as he never scored in the knock out matches he's slightly overlooked! Indeed in 6 matches, we only had 4 different goalscorers.
