Drones at Gatwick

I don't think people understand the agility of drones as I read back through comments on this.0

That’s all assumption and speculation. What does ‘under siege’ even mean?johnnybev1987 said:
its 2020, we have so much technology these days. i am pretty sure the solution isn't going to be that difficult, granted i am assuming.... but it does seem a bit extreme.JiMMy 85 said:I don’t really understand the criticism of the authorities on this thread. I’d imagine we don’t have all the information, and I’m not entirely sure what it is they’re supposed to have done that they haven’t.
It’s very easy to say ‘it wouldn’t be allowed to happen elsewhere!’ but without an example to back that up, I don’t see the logic.
If we cant cope with a drone issue, what if Gatwick got under siege? i know its a completely different kettle of fish but it does seem to your average person this has been dragged out and poorly handled.

I’m not saying it’s been handled well, I just don’t see how any of us could possibly know either way given how little we know.2 -

I'm no mastermind, but drones are small, whereas a Boeing 747 is bleeding massive. If a drone collided with a plane, the wrst that could happen is a bit of a scratch to the paint on the bodywork.
Perhaps if Ryan air, BA and Virgin could stop being so precious, the odd plane could fly.
thats what happens when a plane hits a flock of birds7 -
The odds increase massively the second a bullet is fired into the sky. Some may say the probably increases 100% from 0 bullets in the sky that can't hit anybody to 1 bullet in the sky that may hit someone.SantaClaus said:
What are the odds of a stray bullet hitting someone? 1000/1? maybe even 10,000/1? Would you want to be to blame for that mistake?

I just mean if it was planes/ army attacking Gatwick it would have been handled better.JiMMy 85 said:

All ifs and butts/ guesswork really0 -
Not true, I've seen evidence that they can cause enough damage to bring a plane down.smudge7946 said:I'm no mastermind, but drones are small, whereas a Boeing 747 is bleeding massive. If a drone collided with a plane, the wrst that could happen is a bit of a scratch to the paint on the bodywork.

I imagine they're more worried about a drone getting sucked through an engine than the paintwork getting scratched.smudge7946 said:I'm no mastermind, but drones are small, whereas a Boeing 747 is bleeding massive. This 100%, a drone would wipe out an engine if it got sucked in.SantaClaus said:

years later it seems... but looks like we might be near to the end of this drama, tbf its keeping me from being bored at work

Army deploying 'specialist equipment'
An army spokesman said specialist equipment is being deployed at Gatwick Airport.
Prime Minister Theresa May said the perpetrators will be caught, and face a prison sentence.1 - Sponsored links:

A commercial drone battery could be the size of a car battery, chuck that in a 747 engine and you could have quite an explosion.smudge7946 said:I'm no mastermind, but drones are small, whereas a Boeing 747 is bleeding massive. If keeping the airport shut had no negative consequences I wouldn't want bullets to be fired into the air but clearly that isn't the case.Dazzler21 said:

Medium sized bird through engine, engine failure, decent sized metal object through rotor blades.....same2 -
Must be difficult for the authorities to do anything until they've found the culprits.
If anybody pronounced "it's probably safe now" and a waiting drone suddenly appeared and downed a plane there would be hell to pay!3 -
What skill ? all they are doing is goug uppalarsehater said:
to be into flying drones you have to be of a technical mind, akin to people that play with train sets, not my bag.Stu_of_Kunming said:
You know this is caused by a tech type, how exactly?palarsehater said:
10 years fuck that wouldn't waste a cell on them, these tech types have 0 common sense.MuttleyCAFC said:When they catch these people they should be given as harsh a punishment as possible. I mean, vital organs for operations can be flown in to Airports too. I would give them 10 years.
Anyone with the money can go buy and fly drones, it's not rocket science.
also to fly them with any skill you cant just take it out the box and off it goes, they have drone racing world cups etc.
its a bit like saying a hacker isn't really into computers
youd need some fkin aim ! its in the path of the planes...i_b_b_o_r_g said:Jokes aside, these things can be brought down easily enough with a decent larger bore shotgun. I'm not sure how much the drones cost, but I wouldn't have thought it would take many to being brought down to help stop people doing it

I’ve always figured, if I’m starting a sentence with - “I’m no expert, but...” then I’m best off abandoning the sentence.26

Also it's looking more and more like these are not regular drones, instead being some sort of long range, highly agile drones.
I will stick my neck out and bet they are not anything special. If they were in the air for 12 hours, they should have been found. There should be contingency planning for this and leaving it to the Police and not getting the army involved sooner was an utter joke.Dazzler21 said:

Has this thread gone political yet?2

I know one person with a drone (his company uses them).
He's stuck at Gatwick with his family trying to get to the US.7 - Sponsored links:

It isn't political, it is common sense that is more of an army thing than a police thing. So many people's Christmases have been ruined and whilst the main culprit is the idiot/s doing it, this shouldn't have lasted as long as it has. I bet you that the board/managment of the airport does contingency planning and if this isn't on their list, you have to despair.
BTW, it is essential they catch the bastard/s and even if they turn out to have some personality issues, it shouldn't negate their sentence.1 -

Unfortunately, it's quite possible the idiots doing this think it's a big laugh too and aren't they clever.Leuth said:I am almost impressed how some jokers with some fairly widely-available kit have brought the UK to its knees, and all without getting caught yet

1-0 to the Heathrow boys...2

It happened in May at Stansted. Pilots have been warning about it for years, so you would expect better preparation. Maybe those who have lost money and holidays can sue if incompetence is proven.0

i'm meant to fly to gatwick from Munich tomorrow at 10am, do I pack now or go to the pub and forget it?0

Looks like I'm the only one who thinks there's more to this.

I’d say there’s definitely more to it. The authorities probably want to catch who’s doing it as they know it’s a carefully organised operation. If it had been a couple of kids mucking around they’d have been brought down by now.clb74 said:Looks like I'm the only one who thinks there's more to this.
