I don’t really understand the criticism of the authorities on this thread. I’d imagine we don’t have all the information, and I’m not entirely sure what it is they’re supposed to have done that they haven’t.
It’s very easy to say ‘it wouldn’t be allowed to happen elsewhere!’ but without an example to back that up, I don’t see the logic.
its 2020, we have so much technology these days. i am pretty sure the solution isn't going to be that difficult, granted i am assuming.... but it does seem a bit extreme.
If we cant cope with a drone issue, what if Gatwick got under siege? i know its a completely different kettle of fish but it does seem to your average person this has been dragged out and poorly handled.

What are the odds of a stray bullet hitting someone? 1000/1? maybe even 10,000/1? Compared to the costs of having a major London airport shut for almost 24 hours it seems a poor risk analysis.
The odds increase massively the second a bullet is fired into the sky. Some may say the probably increases 100% from 0 bullets in the sky that can't hit anybody to 1 bullet in the sky that may hit someone.

A commercial drone battery could be the size of a car battery, chuck that in a 747 engine and you could have quite an explosion.

If keeping the airport shut had no negative consequences I wouldn't want bullets to be fired into the air but clearly that isn't the case.

When they catch these people they should be given as harsh a punishment as possible. I mean, vital organs for operations can be flown in to Airports too. I would give them 10 years.

to be into flying drones you have to be of a technical mind, akin to people that play with train sets, not my bag.

Jokes aside, these things can be brought down easily enough with a decent larger bore shotgun. I'm not sure how much the drones cost, but I wouldn't have thought it would take many to being brought down to help stop people doing it

Also it's looking more and more like these are not regular drones, instead being some sort of long range, highly agile drones.
I will stick my neck out and bet they are not anything special. If they were in the air for 12 hours, they should have been found. There should be contingency planning for this and leaving it to the Police and not getting the army involved sooner was an utter joke.
It isn't political, it is common sense that is more of an army thing than a police thing. So many people's Christmases have been ruined and whilst the main culprit is the idiot/s doing it, this shouldn't have lasted as long as it has. I bet you that the board/managment of the airport does contingency planning and if this isn't on their list, you have to despair.

It happened in May at Stansted. Pilots have been warning about it for years, so you would expect better preparation. Maybe those who have lost money and holidays can sue if incompetence is proven.

I’d say there’s definitely more to it. The authorities probably want to catch who’s doing it as they know it’s a carefully organised operation. If it had been a couple of kids mucking around they’d have been brought down by now.
