Anyone who’s getting on a bit will have gone from a world where quite a lot of people were ‘casually’ racist (possibly the majority?) to one where fewer people are racist (possibly a small minority).

Btw my wife works with Piers Morgan, and since he started working at GMB the viewing figures have gone up substantially. It’s possible that the show would have been taken off air without him.

I'd probably say Brunel, Newton and Darwin are greater to me but i have massive admiration for War time Churchill.
Wow! Along with Churchill - all the top heroes of mine. Only one missing is Arthur Wellesley.

But then so are Queens Elizabeth I, Victoria and Elizabeth II who just go to prove the best Monarchs are women. (Henry V would sneak in, but being a French speaker massively detracts from his achievements. Nous sommes peu nombreux, nous sommes peu heureux, nous formons une bande de frères, wouldn't sound right  ).

Iron Duke wouldnt piss about or mince his words on here

Probably just call us all the Scum of the Earth
  • No I do get it. I just don't see why people need to shot a very iconic British leader down. He had his problems we all do. I'm sure we would be watching Charlton compete in the bundesliga, without him and others. I just feel people need something to get offended by and there only happy when there offended.
That would be awesome to be fair.
  • Basically everyone born when Churchill was born would, in today’s times, be seen as horrifically racist.

You cannot judge some one from history in the context of today’s morality, since morality is constantly changing.

I have have some sympathy with this view but given that the world was fighting against fascism 39-45 , the worst kind and practice of racism i'm not sure you can be seen to be entirely correct. The Battle of Cable street was between fascists , socialists , anarchists and Jewish groups. This was in 1936. Although morality does change often the things at the heart of the issues do not

Except that the German plans for British males was to use us as slave labour, which wouldn’t have included allowing us to play football.

Who the F*** offended apart from you.

This is people disagreeing about WC place in history. History is written by the winners so that's why there is a disparity of views. I am not offended that @Greenie sees the world very differently to me on this issue. I happen to disagree with him but because I am a grown up I can disagree with people an not be offended by their views. Blimey this is hard graft

We would be a team of stewards on no wage :(
  • If we were in the Bundesliga would Curbs have stayed another year? That's what we're all wondering right?

Fine by me, I’m rubbish at football and only want to watch, especially as we’ll be dominating the Bundesliga in this scenario.

    Stutgart would of nicked him
  • very good to judge people in history by today's standards, what a moron.

I agree with this generally but it doesn't apply in this debate. Churchill was being constantly called out for his views at the time by his contempories.

    this

my grandad has passed now but would of been 91, done his bit for his country, royal marine for 15 years then went on to work for bt until he retired, some of the things he came out with would be viewed as "racist" , did he play cards with his black neighbour every day of the week and go up the pub with him regularly - yes, did he say the word jiggaboo occasionally - yes.

It is more entertaining to hear opinions rather than blandness and Morgan isn't short of those. He is still a complete twat though.
  • Did I miss anything?

  • I guess not
  • I may be wrong, but I believe winning the US apprentice has had a profound impact on Morgan. I think he believes he can be the British version of Trump. He tries to take popular stances and that seems to be the key for him now rather than acting on any principles he might of had. As you say, he picks arguments with people who don't really matter, like a feminist who covers herself in spaghetti, this bloke today, the bloke who wanted to be younger etc... He knows the people at home will side with his position without showing your understanding what is behind it all. Why argue with irrelevant people? It is self promotion.

Whilst I completely disagree with the scottish bloke today. Churchill was a truly great Briton, I feel he wasn't crushed by Morgan this morning, which irked him a lot.
That's exactly what this is. Shameless self promotion, chasing likes, retweets and exposure. It's easy to debate someone with really marginal, bordering on ludicrous opinions.

Sadly you wouldn’t be watching either. Labour camps and death mate, like so many others.

Well, that's cheered me up no end.

    Ah that’s a blow.
  • After the Manchester atrocity his initial public pronouncements about Ariana Grande were nasty and uncalled for.
